How does everyone have a freighter?
I do not have a freighter.
I want a freighter.
Freighter.
After a few jumps you’ll jump right into a freighter fleet being attacked. Kill the attackers, dock in the freighter, and you’ll get the freighter fleet for free.
Fly around and you will get a random mission to defend a freighter. Succeed in battle and the freighter captain will give the shop to you in gratitude.
I killed the attackers, but then landed on the planet and now the freighter is gone.
I guess I don’t get my freighter.
I reliably found that the first time that you warp into a non-path system (basically any old system not connected by a line), you get the space battle and your chance to get a freighter.
See, however:
This. For crashed ships the easiest thing to do is hop in and choose the option to Buy It (for 0 Credits). Immediately hop out and get back into your actual ship (the one you were flying before) and make it your primary. Now take off and go do stuff. You shouldn’t lose anything from your inventory doing this, because neither ship ever moved. Next time you land on your freighter flight deck, the crashed ship will be there. It’s still broken, so you literally have a ship up on blocks in your freighter hanger, but you can then return to it and repair stuff at your leisure.
“Selling” the crashed ship basically just consists of fixing it up to the point where it can fly, then going to a space station or trading post and waiting for a ship you like to land. Talk to the pilot and buy his ship. The trade-in value of your busted up ship will be applied to the swap, saving you that many units off the price of the new ship. I have not checked it post-NEXT, but the value of the crashed ship increases closer to it’s max value with every repair you make to it. However, trade-in value is only like 80% of “retail” or something similar, so you reach a point where repairs can be a diminishing return.
You are doing it the hard way. Just make cryo pumps. Buy the ingredients off of star ships arriving at an outpost, then craft cryo pumps out the wazoo and sell them. You can do this faster I think.
You don’t even have to do that. Ships will dock into the freighter too, so you can just wait a bit and see if you get a ship you want.
Just be mindful that you can’t own infinite ships. I think the current cap is 6 ships, and I don’t know what happens after you reach that cap.

I think I can answer this one: Those subterranean relics are usually vortex cubes in a cave. The icons sometimes vanish when you approach, but digging there will open up a cavern with your loot strew about.
You can find ingredients on trading posts and even stations in some cases. The hardest part is getting the blueprint for cryo pumps, which can take a good while.
I ignored the first request I got to assist a freighter because I used to get them all the time pre-NEXT and the reward was never a free freighter. When I learned of the post-NEXT change, I simply answered the next call I got, and the freighter was mine. I don’t think it’s tied to a single freighter in a single system…it’s just tied to the first one you actually bother to rescue. So technically you could not answer the call, fly by the freighter and scope it out, and if it’s not a design you like, warp off to another system and wait for another battle with a nicer freighter.
I would, if I had a known recipe for Cryo-Pumps. The reason I was raiding manufacturing facilities last night was to find a recipe for a valuable component, like Semiconductors. The most expensive thing my character knew how to make on his own before last night was Living Glass (700K), and that takes a crapton of frost crystals to produce manually. I was trying to build a farm for them pre-NEXT, and now post-NEXT the base restoration buggy mess has me stymied on that front.
That’s also the most reliable way to get the blueprint for cryo pumps, it seems, so keep at it! ;)
Between this thread and some videos I saw on YT, plus the 50% discount, I am jumping back in (oh, not to mention there were like 3 major updates before this one, as well). I played it at launch but refunded it - some of it was because of the hivemind in general not liking it, some of it is I was worried I would put it away after a few hours and wish I’d refunded. In any case, I dove back in.
I played it for 10 or so minutes, just long enough to get to my ship and get a save game made as well as do some light exploration, and I have to say, it was really cool to dive in and explore and play this. I don’t remember the game feeling this good/polished while playing, but it does, and of course it looks dynamite. I’m pretty excited to get home tonight and put some more time into it.
One question - I’m playing with my controller and it feels fine, but are keyboard shortcuts not working while using a controller? I ask because F12 wasn’t taking screenshots…?

Yes.
Also, at any point, you can just summon it to you.
I play M+K while walking and XBOX controller while flying. F12 steam shortcut for pics works for me. Maybe put down the controller for a second, hit a key so it knows you switched input methods, then try F12.
Also, the quick menu (X) has a very functional camera that allows you to zoom, pan, etc. That should work via the controller. I think it’s d-pad down to activate the quick menu on the controller.
I believe I have the answers to these. As for having tagged stuff disappear when you seem to be right on it I can only say it’s happened to me too but less and less as I try not to get ‘right on it’ but instead stop at a diagonal and use the terraformer liberally to excavate from a greater distance?
Base Mission getting relocated to your freighter. Basically this: Go outside the space station and click X menu (on PC… same one as when you need to get on Comms) and move over to the icon of the freighter and relocate your freighter. Doesn’t have to be far just away from where the icon for the quest is. Now switch to a different quest and then back to this one. Is the icon now at your planet base? If so, solved. If not, go to your planet base, save game, quit and restart and it should be on it now.
Had a frigate needing repairs that I couldn’t find once also. Think I quit and restarted or maybe went to a different system and then back again.
Endless waves of sentinels in space. Known bug so for now, when you have got the sentinels tracking you on a planet hide out until the coast is clear or if you get in your starship DO NOT LEAVE THE PLANET until the timer runs down.
I’ve had three or so, they always came from buying ‘scanner upgrades’ at the tech merchant. Kind of annoying that you can’t really see what something does until it’s actually installed! But the upgrade is cool, netting 20-30k per plant scanned.
Yep, the launch version had that but for some reason it was removed in the first update in favour of the static images. Every new version I check hopefully to see if it’s back!
It’s a single player game, that supports 4 player co-op.
Your ship is always teleported with you. You need to build a teleporter at your base to return to the station - it’s available in the blueprint machine, and built through the ‘permanent’ structure menu. The save point is portable, you must have left it behind. :)
I had this yesterday too, this fixed it for me after various other internet tips failed:
- make sure the base upgrade mission is unselected
- summon your freighter elsewhere to ‘detach’ the mission from it (this step may be optional, didn’t test)
- build a new base computer in the system where the mission marker is
- standing in that base, activate the mission - should be able to continue now
- delete the base (optional)
- until this is patched, only ever make this mission ‘live/selected’ when you’re standing in your base
If it’s an XB controller or similar, check that the Steam controller is not overriding it. F12 works when I’m using my XB1 wireless.

Ahh, that is a bug? I was so confused when that happened to me. I’m still early on, but I encountered that base that has the whispering eggs. I started shooting the resulting jack-in-the-box of horrors without realizing that there was a sentinel nearby, who went after me. I thought I could quickly get away from it by hopping in my ship and running, only to realize they would send ships after me. I tried running to no avail, so I blew that ship up. Then two came and I quickly dispatched those. Then three, then… at that point I just let them blow me up.
I thought it was a dumb mechanic, but that’s a bug? How is it supposed to work in space? And how do you typically hide from them on the ground, digging a hole with a terrain manipulator or something?
Normally you try break line of sight with hills, buildings, going into caves, that kind of thing, and they’ll switch to ‘hunting’ mode. If you avoid them until the aggression timer runs down, you’ve escaped.
This works in space too, if you outrun them by speeding through asteroids or luring them around capital ships until you can pulse jump again.
Or it used to, in any case. :)
