I think that’s a fake multitool on the righthand merchant’s kiosk.
No, it’s not. You can interact with it and buy it just like anything else.
I tried repeatedly. Maybe you need the right angle or something…

I’ve seriously never been able to. I tried for a good 5+ minutes the other night. I left it thinking it must have just been decorative or something. Weird.
Bizarre, I’ve never had an issue. You get close and it opens up, revealing the multi-tool inside. Then hold X to interact.

Bizarre then for sure. It opens up, I see a multi-tool but… no interact prompt. I tried holding down X just in case, tried switching to M/KB… no luck. I’ll try again today, maybe the game just needed to be restarted.
You can also find loads of free navigation data in space stations. Look at the various desks around for blue cubes or yellow pyramids.
I barely figured this out last night… and only because of a mis-click… and this is after 40 hours of play.
Guess who spent the next couple hours exploring every system he could?
And that tool isn’t fake, you just have to line up in a particular way. It’s fickle.
Just to add a third totally unhelpful perspective…I’ve seen it both ways. On my space trucking route there is one station where the tool opens up and becomes clickable if I so much as glance in it’s direction. At the next station, I had to jetpack jump wiggle until I’d wedged myself into a space between the desk and the wall before it became clickable. In retrospect, that would have been an embarrassing situation had I gotten stuck. “Don’t mind me, check out these quality multi-tools and components until this gentleman’s assistant returns with the Corellian boar grease…”
Along with the cube things, there are little black discs everywhere in stations and ground buildings that give navigation data.

How do you really increase your extreme environment survival and what counts and an extreme environment? I have googled this and am still not clear as to what is such an environment. I read a few things which said once you are on a planet like this, just go into a structure and go afk for a while.
I am one a fiery world that does fire damage constantly, along with fire storms. I have been parked for over an hour in an alien structure and my progress has not changed at all (0.4 at level 0).
Another thing to note is there are different levels of adverse effects and the lowest (indicated by a single arrow blinking next to the bar) are pretty tame. It’s the 3 arrow flashing red ones you really need to watch for.
And beyond that planets have variation on how often the adverse conditions occur. And if it’s 3/red and frequent I just move on, not worth it.

It seems like the freighter has a crew which is whatever race is occupying the current system it’s in.
Re: that navigation data-- you feed that into your signal booster to find drop pods with available exosuit upgrades, right?*
*which unfortunately I’ve never been able to unlock because I don’t have the requisite materials on me, and a lot of times it’s not even a resource officially available on the planet, if the scan data is complete. I suppose one could find a trading post and buy it there from the terminal or random traders.
BTW, when I find a drop pod and there’s one of those “save and chart” thingies there, can I go back to that in an easy way, or do I have to find it by latitude and longitude?
Unfortunately, “save and chart” doesn’t create any kind of waypoint or allow you to find it again. You’ll need to rely on the coordinates unless you can drop a beacon there.

When building bases, is there a way to assemble your pieces in photo mode (or something similar), instead of first or third person? It’s quite difficult to get certain things aligned and set up right when I’m either blocked by my own character, or limited by a close-up first-person view. But in photo mode I can see all the angles and I can back up far enough so that putting the pieces together would be a much better experience.

2 minutes of that could have been the same music playing over floating damage numbers~
Similar, but the drop pod one is a separate data type. The nav data finds various buildings, crashed freighters/ships, etc.
The save/chart discovery system does not let you navigate, no. Either drop a beacon or use the manual lat/long thing. Or find another drop pod, they’re everywhere! :)
I have the PC version of NMS and have it set to borderless window mode, However, when I exit the game and start it back up, it keeps putting me in windowed mode instead. If I kill the process at the main menu (before loading a save) and restart the game, it’s back in borderless window mode again as it should be.
Is anyone else having this problem? It never did this pre-NEXT and it’s really annoying.

Is there a way to un-refine something without going to the top tier product and then going to the low tier one?
IE: I have refined iron and I want the dust. So far it seems that I need to go to magnetic first and then turn that to dust.
err, I thought I could go to dust, but apparently I can’t seem to figure out how to do that. I just need to make metal plates and i have loads of refined iron and magnetic iron.
