Mine stays in borderless, but it was a fresh install with NEXT.
Yeah, exact same thing here. It’s annoying but not literally unplayable. ;)

What are people doing with bases? So far, all I have unlocked are base structural components. I know there are things like hydroponic pods and whatnot. I guess I just need to keep unlocking blueprints and they will show eventually or is there some other way to get more advanced stuff?
How far into the Artemis storyline are you? If you want base stuff, that’s what you need to do.

Not far I think. Last time I checked, I was supposed to locate them. Come to think of it, I am not sure I recall seeing it in my mission log recently. Ill have to check when I get home. In any case, I guess Ill prioritize that then.
I am just kind of wandering around trying to get polo unlocks so I can get farther range so I can jump to non-yellow stars. I still have no idea how I am going to do that hazard survival one. My progression is really far in all other categories, but still level zero for that one.
A few steps down that ‘Awakenings/Artemis’ chain you’ll reach a mission called ‘Ghosts in the Machine’, which asks you to… build a base. :)
It’s a whole big thing from the previous updates that leads to lots of cool stuff. Assuming it’s all still in there… I’ve only just reached it this time around myself. Though I’m pretty sure it is as I’ve seen people complaining about bugs with it. ;)

1.52 dropped on the PS4 last night, but it didn’t fix the issues with the base restoration mission, nor the blueprint scanner bug I don’t believe.
Sad.

I found my first crashed ship on a planet. It was the same type of ship as mine, just one size bigger. I fixed up the launch thrusters and the pulse engines, but what do I do with it? I just got a freighter, but can’t figure out how to get it there. I try doing the “summon ship” thing and it shows up on the list, but everywhere it says that it “can’t be summoned there”.
Are there any way to sell these ships, or are they just extra spares?
o.k., I finally booted this up, and so far it’s the hardest game I’ve ever played in my life - I died in under 5 minutes from environmental exposure without having any idea what I was supposed to do - no tutorial, etc.?
Second try. Within 30 seconds I get warning of environmental exposure again, so I try to mine something, anything, in front of me. I get some rock dust which I apparently need to fix my scanner. Then a flying sentinel thing starts hitting me with a beam - unsure if it’s attacking me or scanning me or what, so I stop mining. I try to start again when it’s distracted and it keeps coming back. I get fed up and attack it, and end up getting jumped by 2 more than come in and die from environmental exposure again, before I can even fix my scanner, let alone do whatever the hell I’m supposed to do to avoid environmental exposure.
I’ve never had this kind of goofy experience starting a game - help?
If you end up on a starting planet where the sentinels start harassing you (like actually shooting lasers), screw that and start a new one. Life’s too short for that BS IMHO.
Basically, first thing you want to do is hit the scan button (left click on a controller, check the keyboard key in your settings) and look for icons near you in your hud with Na (sodium). Sprint over to the yellow plant and interact with it (x on the controller, e on the keyboard), don’t shoot it with the mining beam.
Once you’ve got some sodium, you have to figure out how to charge your hazard protection with it – in the escape menu (which pauses the game) there should be detailed instructions on how to do that (it’s a bit fiddly).
BTW I died or quit the first two or three times myself. :-) As I wrote above, if you don’t get semi-chill sentinels on the starting planet, nope out right away-- “ain’t nobody got time for that.”
Are you playing on Normal? Do not start a Survival game without being well versed in how to play No Man’s Sky, as it’s an exercise in frustration and futility. Normal is hard enough at the start.
Concentrate on moving and staying alive at the start. Look for yellow glowing plants and red glowing plants. The yellow give you sodium, which is essential for recharging the shield on your exosuit (the yellow bar) that protects you from environmental damage. The red give oxygen, which is used to recharge your life support (the white bar). Use the interact button/key (“E” on PC) to harvest them. These two elements are your priority to start with. Keep moving and collecting these until you have a decent amount. You can also shoot small rocks and boulders with your multi-tool to collect Ferrite Dust, another element you will use to repair your equipment and your ship once you find it.
Listen to your suit. At the very start it tells you what to do next…leading you through the survival process. The tutorial/quest will show on your HUD in the lower right corner. Collect the required resources to repair your suit systems as instructed, while also focusing on grabbing as much sodium and oxygen as you can, and you should be able to survive long enough to find your ship. You can duck into caves (or even create one of your own with your terrain manipulator on the multi-tool) and buildings to recharge the suits environmental shield. Do that when possible, as it’s a long trek to your crashed ship.
Once you find your crashed ship, repeat the process to gather all the required elements to make the parts to repair the ship’s systems. Everything you need should be somewhere around you, but you may need to hike a bit to find it. Your ship acts like a building, even when broken, allowing your suit to recharge while you are inside the cockpit.
And like @Papageno says, sometimes the RNG gives you a super lemon planet…there is no lemonade in this game, so simply quit and start over on a less harsh world.
When you find a crashed ship you want, on the Compare screen there is an option to Buy For 0 Units. Do this, and then go back to your own ship and get in. You’ll see a message about “Primary Ship Changed”, which means you just changed from the wrecked ship you “bought” to the regular ship you flew in on. Now fly away and do whatever you like, and when you return to your Freighter’s hanger deck, the wrecked ship you “bought” will be sitting there, up on blocks, waiting for you to spend all your time and resources to fix it up!
In your case, I’m not sure if the new ship will appear since you already did some work on it on the ground. Try flying to your freighter (in your old ship) and see if the new one is there. If it isn’t, you may have to do some fiddling with making it your primary, flying it to your freighter and seeing if your old ship then magically appears in the hanger deck.
You can’t really “sell” ships for units in NMS. You can trade them to an alien for a better ship, and have the current value of the ship you fixed up applied to the price of the new ship. So if you find a crashed ship that is worth $20 mil credits, and you fix it most of the way up, it might give you $15mil in credit on a trade for a new ship, making a new and better ship easier to acquire down the road.

I think I broke my game.
I warped to a system with a single planet which turned out to be an ice world with very few resources. I don’t have the components required to make more warp fuel, they’re not available on the planet and I haven’t found them for sale either from the station or the ships that come and go.
I thought of a possible way out this morning - if I join a random’s game will I appear in a different system or in the same system with the same barren world?
I experimented a bit last night with jumping into random games so I could dock with the station and purchase extra inventory slots for my ExoSuit but I never checked to see if the system was the same.

I see. I assumed I’d need to fix the engines for it to get off the planet. Dang. I’ve checked my freighter and it’s not there, but I’ve heard there are bugs with it not showing up sometimes until you’ve moved systems, reloaded the game, or performed other voodoo. I’ll check again when I play next.
If it is stuck in some limbo, is there a way to abandon a ship?
If you save the game at the freighter and reload, all your ships should be there. At least that’s true in my case.
No way to abandon a ship, apparently. I could be wrong of course.
System is whatever system the host of said Random MP game is in, so your idea should work well to get you out of your jam. Unless, of course, the random is also on some lifeless world… =)
As @rhamorim suggests, try flying to your freighter, saving and quitting, and then reloading the game. All ships should then appear in your hanger deck.
If that still doesn’t work, try flying back to the wrecked ship (if you can), and taking it over. Fly the wrecked ship to your freighter and save/quit. Reload and both ships should appear in your freighter.
Where do these crashed ships go if you claim them in this fashion but you don’t have a freighter?
As far as I know, they stay put where you left them until you have a freighter.
The multi-tool doesn’t have a terrain manipulator at first, though. :-) In fact does the scanner even work right off? Can’t remember.
