Puppies

My search for a perfect base planet continues. I stopped at several systems last night, each with 4-6 planets, a decent economy and Water designation on the star map, all of which are key to finding a suitable paradise planet. Also, I’m in the Eissentam universe which should make paradise planets more common.

Found one with a great economy, low sentinels, basic resources…but superheated rain storms fairly frequently. Nope.
Found one with a nice resource mix and more active sentinels, which I can deal with, but the “water” was in the form of lots of small lakes everywhere, no oceans. Nope.
Found one with a very Earth-like look, oceans, nice resources, low sentinels, calm weather…I’m walking around thinking “jackpot!” when something bites me. I look down to see a creature that looked exactly like a giant purple tick attacking me. Gross. I blasted it and went back to exploring a bit. Walked down the hill from my ship to a knowledge stone and some discarded containers…and coming up the valley towards me are half a dozen more aggressive giant purple tick creatures. Any base I build on this planet will be infested with these things within minutes. OH HELL NO.

And so I wander once again through the endless reaches of space in search of a home…

Ha! Had giant spider/crabs on one recently, creepy. At least they were friendly arachnids?

I want to get to the center and pick a stormy galaxy. My perfect planet has storms and gorgeous sunsets, and water. But not the water vapor storms of lush planets … other storms.

Mine weren’t friendly. I wish they were so I could milk/ride them!

Yet I based there anyway. Bigger issue is the planet is packed with grass which seems to extra-tank the framerate in VR. Think I need to move again.

I’ve found a watery Gek-filled planet that has a mild climate, just by pursuing the tutorial quest line. The quest has had me build a base, visit a starbase, install a warp drive, find antimatter, make warp fuel, and warp to a new system. Did you vets all do such a quest 3 years ago when the game first launched, or is this new, more newb-friendly content?

I like it, but it looks like they’re about to drag me away from this planet I rather like. I guess that’s okay.

Even with the more generous inventory space, I’m constantly feeling the pinch. I hope I’ll learn how to expand inventory and cargo space soon!

It was different at launch but similar. There were no player bases back then. It still gradually doled out the essentials like the first warp engine and antimatter as you went along early on, but it was buggier. People often missed out and had to acquire them by grinding instead.

It was much more of a tutorial, with no real story. There was no Artemis, just the Atlas.

This tutorial does have a story, and I’m enjoying it so far. And I haven’t encountered any bugs in the tutorial, either.

Sometimes this game has me thinking of “Spore,” which I hoped would be more like this.

I’ve just arrived at the Nexus, which really impressed me. Really pretty and shiny place, with interesting things to do.

Also, I’ve seen plenty of interesting creatures. Walking mushrooms in a cave; standing (on their hind legs) plant-eating stegosaurus things; little nutmunchers. I get a kick out of identifying and renaming things.

I also get a kick out of learning the languages. I really like learning languages word by word, and gradually making sense of dialog.

All in all, this game is my sorta thing!

Yeah I love the designs of some of those new aliens at the Nexus. I wonder if they’ll be expanded upon next big update.

Jaded travellers will trivialize the creature system, like our friend above who says everything is just dogs. ;)

But when you’re new it is pretty awesome not knowing what you’ll see next! Even 3 years on I still love it, and to me seeing new creatures is the best part of the VR experience too.

I hope you’re scanning/cataloguing and maybe even naming some! :)

I scan, catalog, rename, and upload every creature I encounter! I often want their name to indicate what they eat; thus “nutmuncher” or “two-legged leafeater”. I also scan and upload minerals and plants, but those I don’t rename very often.

I’m also boggled by how deep the tech tree is. Lots of interesting stuff to build. But how in the world do people gather that much research data?

Also, I now can afford to research the Storage Unit, but someone hinted that I might get the blueprint for it as part of the Artemis quest, so maybe I’ll wait a bit.

Is there a way to bulk upload discoveries? I can only find a way to do that for planets.

It seems to be broken. I’m not sure how long it has been that way, or if they ever plan to fix it. Not sure what kind of load it would be on their servers if they fixed it and people uploaded their backlog.

Seems like it’s been broken more often than not over the lifetime of the game! Pretty sure it was working pre-Beyond.

Yes, I think the Base Computer gives you one and tasks you with building it.
Then later the Artemis base-building questline gives you the other nine blueprints, as they’re numbered 0-9.

That’s correct, and note that if you happen to do Artemis first and unlock cubes 1-9, you still must complete the other for Cube Zero.

Thanks for the tips!

Tip:

If you buy a ship instead of exchange, and you have a frigate, you have access to both ships in the frigate and the spawn menu. Is very easy to use the old ship as extra storage. Like… I have a 46 slots ships in my frigate that I only use to store farm materials.

There was a bug at least at the beginning of beyond where if you had any cargo in your ship, your ship would disappear from your collection when you did the claim.

I upload and rename randomly. Usually when I’m low on nanites. But renaming I only do maybe every 10 planets or so if I’m bored. Like the names of book characters or liquor brands or whatever is on my mine. I went into one system with 3 planets all loaded with cadmium so I named it, “Maybe Cadmium Later IDK.”

But the majority of explored systems I go to have no names. So I’m not the only one that gets bored of it I guess.

Not paying the “at least name the system and the planets” tax annoys me. I always name each with a not-memetic or whatever name. Of course, by the time I’m in sargasso sea of the galaxy, my star and planet names sound like two words randomly picked out of a dictionary, but hey, I try.

I don’t rename anything, because there’s no keyboard in VR. :(
