Agreed. And if you end up with some starship upgrade modules (you randomly get one when you salvage a starship) burning a hole in your pocket, save those to add inventory slots to a higher class ship.

If you had to choose between an “A Class” of these 4 ship types, which would you choose? Shuttle, Fighter, Explorer, Hauler?

I thought Explorer might be the best mix, but then I saw it has the lowest damage and I have a little trouble taking out enemies. The hauler drives like a pig, the handling is terrible, and the Fighter doesn’t have nearly enough slots.

Me? Explorer, then Hauler. The benefits of the class on Explorer really help get you around for warps quicker than otherwise. Even more so if you apply some hyperdrive upgrades.

I don’t dogfight much in game so the other two aren’t as high on my list. A lot of people love having a fighter though.

To explain it a bit more, if you had 10 hops between you and system you’re questing to, having longer hyperdrive jump distances mean that might end up being 3 jumps, not 10. That in turn saves you having to reload the hyperdrive, etc, etc. If you’re questing to get to the center of the universe, an higher class Explorer is a real time saver.

Explorer for sure, imo. Then expand it, if it’s a Tier 3 A or S Class. Then start working on your other ships. And unless you plan to sell a lot of goods, it might just be the only starship you need. (Until you find an Exotic, which has a tiny inventory but amazing hyperdrive range.)

Cool, then Explorer it is! I’ll be watching for the best one I can :)

I found a system that has 4 planets and all 4 have ancient skeletons :)

That’s funny, I would have voted for fighter. Mostly because a) they look better (gotta look good!), but also b) the extra punch is useful anywhere you are in the universe.

Slots, eh, slots who cares about a few extra slots? Players are spoiled with slots now! You should’ve seen the olden days! You can carry more stuff in your backpack now than you could with the best possible ship in v1.0.

Hyperdrive range is not that important, since you don’t actually need to go anywhere in particular for dozens or even hundreds of hours. By the time you actually want to go somewhere, you’ll be rich enough to have a backup Explorer for jumping, or use your freighter or wait out to find an exotic. Those have the best possible hyperdrive range, I think.

Oh… My… God… I am sooooo stupid!

HAhaha I’d been frustrated in the Freighter having to hop between my 5 Fleet Command Stations to see what’s happening with my missions. And I still hadn’t found out where to upgrade my freighter. Then by chance I accidentally clicked the center circular bridge console when trying to click the navigation dude. That stuff was all there all along! I just thought that was for decorative purposes. LOL

Thanks for the advice on the freighters barstein. With several reloads i landed a nice Capital A class. I got tired of reloading or I would of went for the S class. The A class has the max slots for the class though and its a capital ship!

What 2 weapon types do you all use for your multi-tool? I’m having trouble taking out walkers and the 4 legged dog things.

From what I’ve read, S class freighters are pretty rare. Some people believe they don’t actually exist, and some people say their stats are not that much better than A class freighters. I think you’re good, in any case.

Of course, you might decide later that you really like the look of one of the other models.

Take out the walker’s legs and shoulders, then go for the head. Periodically hide inside buildings (you can even shoot them from inside). The pulse spitter is enough to take them out, with a little finesse, and the plasma launcher is a little better.

You can also do more damage with your ship (edit: or an exo), but that approach has a few potential drawbacks.

Forgot to mention, be sure to grab the Walker’s brain after you down it. You’ll need it later to craft the starship Conflict Scanner upgrade.

Yea that’s why I need to take one out.

All the activity in this thread is tempting me to dive back in. Last time I played was December 2018, with 90 hours in. Would it be best to restart, or continue with my last save?

Also, thoughts on hopping galaxies? I never did that before due to the thought of losing all I had built.

@barstein so I finally killed a walker, but where is the brain?

Depends. You might get just try it to see what happens. There are lots of players who’ve used the same save through all the updates, but I think the majority start new saves (like I do). There are some potential problems you might encounter, though. (Base issues, quest issues, planet ecosystems changing on you, local sentinel attitude changing on you, and maybe other things I can’t remember.)

There’s no practical advantage to sticking with an old save, imo, other than quest progression and having stuff you were attached to.

Personally, I got a thrill out of hopping galaxies. I’m in Eissentam at the moment. And you can always teleport back and forth. When looking at the teleporter list, the name of the galaxy is appended (e.g., “[XXX [Euclid]”).

If you do decide you want to try for a new galaxy, let us know because there are various ways to do so that have pros and cons.

It’s inside a capsule that drops after you destroy the Walker. Extract the brain with your mining tool.

The capsule must have rolled away. Darn it.

It should be in the area somewhere, keep looking. Or just attract some sentinels and kill another one.

In all my play time I have yet to make it to the center. Am thinking this time I may push for it.

This is me as well. Played a ton, but never finished either of the main quest lines, heh.

@Silent, one thing about the way things have changed in the last year is base power generation, and that can screw with old bases. I’d vaguely recommend starting over. As I mentioned upthread, they’ve added ways to just ignore the usual quest/building progression so things unlock much quicker if you want them to.
