The team size at original release was like 8 people. And it sold a ton, on both Ps4 and Steam, so that was money in the bank to keep them going for years. Then it got an Xbox release two years later with Beyond, and anecdotal evidence says that every time they have a big DLC drop, they get another boost in sales, with words of mouth talking about how good it is now. When they first introduced Quicksilver as currency to buy cosmetics, I thought that was going to be their monetization (and perhaps it was intended that way), but it looks like they don’t need it.
Right?! My guess is they’re still patching things up with the initial customer base (and boosting positiive reviews) but must be selling new units. I’d also guess they’ll drop a paid DLC soon but then again, how much content can a paid DLC even have since they’ve been dumping so much new stuff into the free updates? I dunno, but they’ve certainly restored faith IMHO and I’ll throw more money at them when they’re ready to ask.
They’ve come a long way with their Steam reviews. Recent reviews are all overwhelmingly positive (88%) and the total reviews are at mixed (62%) - I remember when it was in the mid 30’s for a long while after release. They’ve earned my forgiveness.
Oh hey , a million new players thanks to gamepass last month…
.
There are a number of games … and this is, of course one of them … where I try to get started and even before I start I get overwhelmed just knowing there are roughly 8 billion things I can do in the game. It’s like decision paralysis. Cities: Skylines is another. I vascillate between thinking “I should watch some videos to see how I should best start” and “just play the freaking game already.” When I start watching a video I immediately think I should be playing the game, and when I play the game I’m worried I am doing it ‘wrong’ (inefficient, whatever) so I am tempted to quit and fire up YouTube!
I didn’t used to be like this! I blame the internet.
I get that, but in both of these games cases (and I have been there with both), playing worked better than videos by far.
With NMS it may be my playstyle (not focused on min max but on “good enough”). Good enough though has gotten me maxxed saves in all difficulties and even the center of galaxy in permadeath w/o using the portal shortcut. So the videos are more the waste of time. You’ll get there faster experimenting and using what you have not wasting time min-maxiing what you don’t have. The game is not hard enough to require many min maxing, at least so far. I always end up distracted taking screenshots anyway.
With Cities there is just such a range of quality on videos. And again, I go for “good enough”. I do watch one or two to refresh myself on ideas if I haven’t played it in a few months. But more I skim the video to jog my memory on how the systems work. Then I dig in. Just finished one of the game scenarios. Had an issue with traffic in one of my industrial areas. Watched two videos and was pointed to a street pattern download. Ignored all three, and just ripped out the roads and redid them the next day slowly watching how each new road changed things, and that was enough to get things working. Really what I needed was a train, which I hand;t unlocked yet that save. Once I unlocked that it was super easy to fix up traffic there. The game just has some of those humps. Better off quick fixing a “good enough” solution, then unlocking the milestone with a better tool than over-designing with poor tools anyway. So many of the videos rely on specific mod sets too.
There are games where being efficient matters! I haven’t found these two to be in that category though.
@everyone, so with NMS screenshots in mind. I want one non-living ship in my next save. With the new upgrade path getting anything to S class and max storage is doable. So:
What is the absolutely best looking non-living ship you’ve seen, any type?
I feel the same with many “sandbox” games but the beauty of NMS is that there is no rush to do anything at all. The hardest part is acquiring the components to fix your first ship, after that you’re free to do whatever. Having said that, I still do feel overwhelmed sometimes just having all of these options available to me but in the end, I usually just fly around and visit POIs and do small tasks that gradually lead to completing the larger ones. I try not to get caught up with being an over-achiever/min-maxer type and earn my keep and achievements casually.
Anyway, hope you give it another shot and just take is slow! It’s worth it.
But it is only one way. AKA, make sure you can easily get back to your freighter using non-teleporter means before you teleport off it, or be willing to summon it back to you.
haha this will be old hat for you experienced players but I’ve landed on a planet where all 5 fauna I have discovered so far move by hopping…the landscape is a sea of hopping weird-looking creatures…most entertaining.
This is me, with a large number of games. I have to remind myself that losing can be fun too.
Loading times seem to have drastically improved with the latest patch!
Yes definitely noticeable
Underwater at night is much nicer with new lighting too.
Same post, now with examples:
I convinced myself to just dive into the game and am having a good time. Though some of the activities remind me of playing an MMO in that you spend a lot of time running here and there and travel times are non-trivial. I think I’m still undergoing the extensive tutorial since I just installed my Hyperdrive and I assume I’ll be going to another system soon to fetch some Galactic Bear Asses or the like.
Yep you are. The tutorial parts aren’t so bad, as the bear ass is showing you how to fuel the drive.
But later when it is just dailies and the procedural quests at spacestations the procedural MMO-like quest grind becomes real. But, you can play the game without doing either.
The real early grind is expanding your suit inventory space. Which I recommend working on earlier rather than later.
I just claimed a broken-down freighter on my home planet. I couldn’t fix it so I went back to my base. Now I can’t find it again, and I can’t summon it because it’s 90% broken. Is there a way I can find it? On the other hand, is it not a big deal if I just move on and find other ships to futz with?
That would be a Hauler or a Shuttle, I’m guessing. Freighters are the enormous beasts you park your starships in. All owned starships, broken or not, will eventually show up there after you acquire a Freighter, and you’ll have a tough time locating that one right now, so just wait.
You can own one Freighter, up to six starships, and up to 30 Frigates (your fleet).
