My brother played through the survival mode to get the achievement a couple months ago. It was really, really hard. Yes, all of the ‘new stuff’ (vehicles, frigates, etc) were in the game, but all the inventory limitations were there from the games launch, which makes things tough to start out.

Thanks @barstein and @Don_Quixote for the info! I ended up just jumping into Normal mode and even there I am having constant inventory limitations so I think I will put off Survival for a later run once I relearn the systems again and can better plan. Now I am just fumbling through, but having a blast and not letting myself get too bogged down on any planet.

The biggest problem with inventory on Survival is that stacks are extremely small- 250 units or something, even the ‘basic’ mats. For Normal, they increased most of the resources to 9999, so that makes it easier.

New released prompted me to reinstall, haven’t looked at it in quiet a while. Living Ships? Mechs? Electrical Grid? WHAT? It’s like a totally new game! I think the deepest I ever got was my own freighter? Bet never quite understood how to build a fleet. Are there any good guides out there or have the tutorials improved? Also I always loved survival but the stack size increase alone means I will play normal, can’t deal with the small stacks again.

I’m with you @ImaTarget. I jumped in and realized that I have never gotten to about half of the cool unlocks that are available. Nevertheless it hasn’t taken me very long to get back into the swing of things. This game is such a time sink because there’s always something interesting to do or aim for.

I found a couple of interesting planets including one with a massive electrical storm but nothing jaw-dropping yet. Still, the increased planet variety is really nice.

Man, every time I start playing this game after a long layoff I have to learn how to play it all over again.

Wow that is beautiful!!!

I played a few hours last night with an old and new character, both Survival mode. It’s still No Man’s Sky, but the new planets are a lot more interesting. My ship ended up being in a crater that was pretty challenging just to get out of at first!

Although the intro quests are better done, they still have the annoying “you’re dying from toxic / heat / whatever exposure! Get moving!” pressure in Survival. I think that turns off more players than anything about the game.

That is the part I love about Survival with NMS. I like how alienating and vicious the Universe can be. I am really tempted to try that again, but I loathe the inventory limitations as that doesn’t lead to fun gameplay, but just a lot of time-draining grind.

If you keep playing in Survival I’d be happy to hear any further thoughts you have.

If you do give it another try, I have two challenging scenario recommendations:

  1. Find an extreme weather planet that has Activated Indium, and set up a mine/outpost there.
  2. Find an extreme sentinal planet that has 1-2 resources you want and set up a mine/outpost there.

Both scenarios are pretty thrilling, and super satisfying when mastered. I even combined the two, once.

Yeah it really surprised me. I was in the middle of atmospheric entry and wondered what the hell happened as my screen shifted from full color to very grainy grey-scale. The planet is very barren, but I want to stay and explore it due to how truly alien and Kafkaesque it feels. I found buried ancient ruins then had to fight sentinels that I could barely see because they didn’t have enough contrast with the horizon and surroundings. So fun though, can’t wait to see what else this planet has in store, but i have to be careful not to run out of resources here.

Thanks! Will keep those in mind.

Just to make sure I’m not missing anything blindingly obvious, there’s no way to play in first person anymore, right? You have to play the game in 3rd person now? Maybe that’s why I preferred it so much more at launch.

You can play in first person. You can switch with the quick action menu (X on PC I think). If I remember correctly go all the way left in the quick action menu then there should be an option to switch perspective.

Sweet. I’ll try that out tonight. Thanks! I spent a long time last night looking for a way and couldn’t find it.

Took me a while to find too. I think I was searching settings for it.

I went back and forth a few times. I thought I would vastly prefer FPP, but third person had a certain charm I wasn’t expecting.

What’s the quick action menu? o_0

I can answer this one since I played last night. Up on the d-pad brings up the quick action menu. By default it’s a quick way to use minerals to recharge your protection or to heal yourself, instead of going to the inventory and fumbling around in there.

It’s a very welcome change from the launch No Man’s Sky, when I had to go into the inventory a LOT.

Will look for the keybind for M&K, thanks! I had no idea that was a thing.

The quick action menu on the PC is brought up by hitting the X key then you can use the mouse scroll wheel to scroll left and right and left click or I think F to select the category you’re in

Default keybinds:

X = Quick menu then use A and D to navigate.

Z = Building like placing your portable refiner.
