OK thanks. So I am guessing that the scrap dealer thing that cost 5 million is some sort of device that lets me land on these derelict traders. That’s the problem with not playing for eight giant patches… They’ve added so many mechanics that I don’t know exactly what is new (of course all of its near me!)

Might want to review the Announcements channel in the Discord for changes since you last played.

Same!

There are two kinds of “derelict freighters”.

The ones you run into as a random “point of interest” and can not be landed upon. Sometimes there will be pirates near. They always look broken. You can run into these anywhere and multiple per system,

The ones that spawn as a result of using items from the vendor or items to specifically spawn “points of interest”. They do not look “broken” just abandoned. These you can land on. There is only one per system. You can’t enter without a valid token though.

The cost for entering the derelict freighters ramps up steeply as well. However, if you go to the nexus one of the NPCs will give you a free key each week. I haven’t played NMS for ages and I’m enjoying going through derelicts (nice rewards- an extra cargo slot in your freighter) but the lack of randomness is starting to tell.

Thanks I didn’t know that! I will be taking advantage of that offer. :)

So I logged in to see what my base planets looked like now. My one pretty base in

Normal Save main base is a “Swamp Planet” biome now and looks like err a swamp and not pretty. The rainbow is still there. Hmm.

But Survival Save! My cold mining, stormy planet in the raging galaxy is even more cold, stormy and inhospitable looking. But my first lush base planet back in the starter galaxy is AMAZING. Rolling waves of glowing grass during the night, bubbles everywhere. Green grass, blue seas with lots of glowing things and it has diplos now. My granddaughter, the three-year old bubble manic is going to love that one when she visits.

I’ve got sort of a strange problem. I’m doing one of the initial Atlas quests, and the last step of the quest has led me to a volcanic planet. However, the quest item I need to touch (from what I understand) is inside a volcano. The volcanoes are indestructible and go down to the planet bedrock. I’m at a loss as to what to do.

Have you tried the Experimental build?

Fixed an issue that could cause volcanoes to be placed upon buildings.

Sort of a last resort fix, but not really detrimental to your quest progress: leave that system and then in the Log tab, select that mission and reset it. It will only reset back to the most recent mission step completion. Whatever it wants you to interact with should then appear elsewhere.

Hm, thanks for both suggestions, guys. Looks like I have a couple of options to handle the glitch.

Edit to add: I don’t think this quest is resettable… it’s one of the main quests from the top section of the log and I don’t see a way to do that. So I might have to wait for the experimental build.

Just a screenshot that shows off some weather effects.

Just got this recently, about 20 hours into it. My problem…the first system I got after the tutorial, had 2 paradise planets, one of which has from what I can figure has more or less perfect attributes…mobs aren’t agro, very little sent activity, ridiculous climate (always about 60f), very few storms, tons of resources, flora and fauna… I think I won the game? I’m not sure what my incentive is to travel…

I’ve been on numerous jumps, got a new ship, done the main questline for a bit etc, but it’s difficult to figure out why I should be doing anything. All of the planets are the same, give or take the artwork, all of the space stations are the same, give or take some upgrade I don’t need to live on a perfect planet, and all of the encounters are the same, and…why am I even bothering with encounters when I could just chill on the beach on my perfect world?

The questline is moderately interesting, collecting new ships is…ok? The freighter missions are vapid, repetitive, and seem like the least possible effort to create content, am I missing something?

I get the game, I get what are supposed to be the hooks that move you forward, but it’s very tough to get the motivation to go anywhere, when I’ve found a planet to hang out on that I’m pretty sure I’m never going to top… For me, habitability should have been something baked into progression. The narrative of trying to follow the story line is fairly obtuse, and to me at least, not particularly compelling, maybe that’s my problem.

I find the various systems in this game to be really obvious treadmills, almost without exception. There is certainly an allure to this, and the possibility of this game is really exciting, but in practice, I find it pretty repetitive, and ultimately very boring.

You don’t have to wait, that fix came out 4 days ago.

To play in Experimental, right-click on No Man’s Sky from the Steam library page and select “Properties”. Among the available tabs will be the “BETAS” tab. Enter “3xperimental” in the textbox and press “CHECK CODE”, then select it from the dropdown menu.

You could play in experimental until the changes make their way to the next proper patch, then go back. I’m pretty much always on experimental in the early weeks after an update lol! :)

That reminds me of a comment I saw over a decade ago regarding Minecraft that said simply spawn your world, then dig or build a coffin sized box, seal yourself in, and you’ve won the game…nothing can touch you!

And you can even ignore almost all the treadmills except modestly expanding your inventory! Leaving … exactly what you say.

I play when I can think of a goal. Once I can’t think of one, I play something else for a while. My most frequent goal is a new desktop background.

Sometimes I just log in over coffee to watch the sun rise on a favorite planet.

Thanks @Profanicus, after posting the above I figured out how to download the Experimental build and switched to that. Unfortunately nothing changed about my stuck quest.

Ok, last time I’m posting about this stuff! I switched to the experimental branch, rolled back to a save from 2 days ago and did the 2 or 3 prerequisite quests leading up to the one I was stuck on… flew to the planet… saw my objective… landed… and couldn’t touch it. As it turns out, the volcano was still there but was invisible when I landed. So I could actually see the end objective but could not get to it. How frustrating.

Are the planets involved in the quests deterministic? I found it pretty difficult to believe that this objective would spawn on a volcanic planet twice in a row. Or maybe there is some seed generated when the questline starts? Not sure what’s going on but it’s definitely weird.

I did learn that animals spawn on the inside of a volcano, and that a fire well can generate inside one too… so a see-through volcano is an interesting thing.

And as a last note, when landing, my ship clipped into the volcano and I could not leave the surface of the planet… it was stuck there. So that was the capper on all this.

During my ‘adventures’ I did jump to another system to try to unstick my ship, and I ended up in this cool ternary system. Unfortunately I was attacked by like 8 ships before I made it into the space station, so win some, lose some.

Used to be they weren’t. But I did two restarts since update and both were on nearly identical planets. So at least odd, but not enough data.

I have had similar issues since this latest update, but not as game breaking. I did a drop pod scan, flew to the pod, and found that it was imbedded in a volcano and untouchable. Since it wasn’t quest related I just muttered a few four letter words and flew off to the next drop pod.

I’ve also had the clipping issue twice, both times while interacting with my freighter. The first time I was using the pulse engine to travel to the local space station and the path went directly through the freighter. I hit the ship (which dropped me out of pulse) and wound up inside the freighter but not in the landing bay. I kept trying to turn and exit but couldn’t leave, and since the ship was clipping I couldn’t see a way out. Even worse, every time I bumped into the outer edge it damaged my shields, so I had to continually recharge them. After five frustrating minutes I gave up and reloaded my last save. The second time happened while I was trying to maneuver to the landing bay and clipped into the side of the ship. This time I somehow wound up exiting from the ship (after two tense minutes) and was able to successfully land. I now get nervous every time I approach the freighter, and really only go there when I have to.

Hello Games has earned my trust, though, and I expect these issues will be patched out soon.
