Oops, I just read your description a second time, and now I’m thinking it actually could be a new bug. Sorry if I added to your confusion. Whatever is actually happening here, the first thing I would do is try and determine if the freighter is of a type/class that’s even worth your time. If it’s not at least an A Class Capital Freighter (24-34 slots, one of two designs), you would probably be happier passing on it anyway and waiting for a better one.

Unfortunately, if you can’t land in it, the only way to tell if it’s a true Capital is to compare it’s design to these:

Dreadnaught

Venator

What’s the process for getting a good free freighter? Do you ignore the first freighter mission or do you take it and ask for a reward? I know in one of my games where I took the first free one, the only choices I had in subsequent freighter battles was buy the freighter or get a reward (which was a hunk of Chromatic Metal)

Well, I got the first one because having a freighter (even a “bad” one) has a lot of perks. Changing to a new one is expensive, but I don’t think I’d like to remain freighterless for long when it’s so useful.

That was my philosophy too when I was first offered one in my other game. But now that I had to restart I’ve turned into a min-maxer!

I somehow got the freighter mission to work. I saved the game and quit to desktop a few times and finally found the freighter in the atmosphere. Battled all the enemy fighters while having to avoid trees, hills and mountains. Got the message to land and when I did and checked out the freighter it is a class A with 23 slots. So, I grabbed it. I then went mining in space and then landed on the space station to sell stuff and when I took off I got the mission again. This time it was in space. When I finished killing the enemy I got another invite to come aboard and when I got there I got offered another free freighter. It wasn’t as good as the first so I didn’t take it. I should mention that this happened in a system that just happened to show up as a destination when I teleport. I never visited this place and have no idea why I it just showed up in me teleport list. I decided to go there and see what was there. Next thing I knew I was falling and just barely got my jetpack going to prevent me from going splat. Landed on a hill and when I walked to the other side of the hill I saw a trading post. Built me a base under the trade post and proceeded to make my a boat load of money. It was then I remembered that I haven’t visited the star base yet and I had to travel to it before it would show up in my teleport list. It was then that the freighter in the planet bug started. One more thing I can’t warp out of the system. When I try the the map shows the Euclid galaxy in the upper left hand corner with no way to select it. I should mention that I did come across a bad ass Atlas station somewhere before all this happened.

Refuse the first one and the next one (after three hours cumulative game time and five more jumps) will be a Capital and not a regular system freighter.

Capitals only spawn for the space rescue mission (triggered as you warp into the system, once you meet the above criteria). All freighters you find otherwise are regular type (15-19 slots), and while you could upgrade the slots, that would take a while to get to 48, which is another reason to get a 34-slot Capital.

Once you’ve met the criteria above, when you enter a system and the rescue mission is triggered, ignore the fight and land on the station. Exit your shp, re-enter and then join the fight to protect the freighter. After it’s over, land on the freighter and check its stats in the hanger using the visor; if it’s an A class or better and has the minimum # slots you want, go see the captain, and if not, simply reload the save made in the station and try again. (The class and slots will change but the color/style will remain the same).

That is…very unusual. If it’s repeatable and not a one-time bug, it’s a very recent change.

Yea I thought it odd as well. There was no price indicated or anything when I was talking to the captain.

I had something similar happen when freighters were first added. I took the second, better ship - and lost everything on my first freighter when it disappeared into the aether.

I had something similar happen. Only it was with my spacecraft. I came across a badly damaged Class A 23 slot ship. I claimed it, did a few things meaning to come back and reclaim my old ship when I had to quit the game. Did a save exited and when I loaded the save my original ship was gone and now I only had a ship that needed major repair just to fly it. Got most of it repaired now and it’s a really good ship. Can take on 5 pirate ships at one time without even breaking a sweat.

Barstein, let see if I understand you correctly. Refuse the first 2 free freighters then play for 3 hours and do 5 jumps then you will always get a 34 slot capital ship. Can the 5 jumps be between systems you’ve already been to or do the have to be 5 jumps to new systems?

Refuse the first freighter; that one will always be a regular (not true Capital) freighter. I ommitted this part, above, sorry.

Thereafter, whenever you reach 5+ jumps and three cumulative (not necessarily consecutive, although consecutive is fine) play hours, when the mission is triggered the freighter is guaranteed to be Capital. BUT you will not always get a 34-slot Capital. Capitals will still vary in class (S, A, B, C) and slots 24-34). Hence the advice to initially ignore the battle, save in the station, and then rescue the freighter and check its class and slots.

The five jumps can be between any system regardless of whether you’ve been there before, how often you’ve visited it, or how recently.

Thanks for the info. My recent start was strange to say the least. I’m going to start over and see what happens.

This last update has broken the ability for me to launch and run the game

I’m very sorry to hear that, but for me it’s broken the ability to launch and run any other game.

That sucks, I am sorry.

This is probably a weak solution, but possibly try moving between the stable release with experimental or vice versa depending on what you have installed.

I’ve already tried that, as well as the usual like running as administrator and disabling fullscreen optimizations for the executable. Will have to visit the subreddit and/or submit a ticket I imagine.

The Discord #help channel is really great (overall, the whole Discord is hands-down the best Discord I’ve ever seen). Give that a try as well, @rei. And maybe try more than once, to take advantage of the different experts living in different timezones.

Edit: also try searching that channel; I see lots of recent chatter about crashes.

LOLWUT how does that even happen! Crazy…
I haven’t had any issue. Im still on Experimental.

Say - on the galaxy map, is there any way to see if you have previously visited the system? I cannot see that any where.
