Reports are coming in that DLSS is amazing on NMS, better than native quality even at 1080p. DLSS2 implementations vary; Control was perfect like NMS and CP2077 less so, so this is good news.

I will attest that DLSS feels like magic in No Man’s Sky.

Ultra at 1440p chugs along unevenly between 30 and 60 fps. With quality DLSS turned on, it’s a rock-solid 144.

That kind of improvement shouldn’t be possible at DLSS Quality, typically you’ll see maybe a 30% gain with zero image quality impact.

Sorry, I was more just making a qualitative statement about how it felt - chuggy vs smooth. Possible it ran better than I imagine before but still felt uneven.

Most likely your minimum FPS is now over the floor for gsync on your monitor, so now it feels great. You shouldn’t go from ~60 to locked 144 at DLSS Quality, is all I’m sayin’.

In VR the resolution when using DLSS is very obviously lower, and blurrier - to the point where I’m thinking ‘is it even upscaling?’. In particular the stars get bigger and bigger each notch you put the setting down lol. :)

The image is faily stable though, and it does smooth out the performance of all those lovely new graphical updates very well (for obvious reasons).

I don’t even remember what DLSS means, does any of this apply to the PlayStation version?

No, DLSS is an Nvidia technology

It’s basically a crazy good upscaling where Nvidia GPUs can take a 1080p image and through some technical wizardry (seriously, that stuff is magic) to make it look like 4K… but at 1080p performance. I’ve only had it available in a handful of games I’ve played but it’s been amazing.

As mentioned above, DLSS is ‘Deep Learning Super Sampling’ - an upscaling anti-aliasing technique that uses artificial intelligence to resconstruct a higher res image out of a lower res one.

It’s on Nvidia hardware because they have dedicated AI hardware acceleration on their GPUs (and because they invented it of course).

It’s like all those scenes in CSI and other shows where they take a low resolution video and say “hey can you zoom in and enhance that part?” And even though the information is not there in the lower res version, they somehow manage to enhance it anyway.

Fired this up in the new system. The night looks nice with the stars. Anyone know if they correspond to the actual map for the galaxy? I wish they would come up with a new solution for clouds, and water at a distance. Those are about the only things I dont like the look of. Give me the clouds of MSFS and the water of Sea of Thieves. :)

Sadly, they do not. :(

They used to! I don’t think so any more.

I started doing a Let’s Play of the Prisms update if anyone is so inclined to view it.

Wait, have I been missing you doing these or is this a new thing!?!?!

I started today so, it’s a new thing. I might branch out into other games that are weirder.

5th anniversary!

Our journey continues with the announcement of Frontiers, our next major free update. This is just another step on our voyage and is coming soon.

And finally, as we push forward to 2021, our next update Frontiers is something I’m very excited about. In some ways it is just another update, but in other ways it’s a missing piece of the sci-fi fantasy that we’ve always wanted to add, and very fitting for our fifth anniversary.

So I’ve loved this game for 5 years now, and that love has grown with each new update.

Here’s to 5 more!

Ok, so the “massively expanded and improved” part happened. The “people will still say they ran with the money”, not so much, thankfully!
