Of falling for the hype himself? Of losing sight/perspective of what they were actually able to provide? Of receiving a far harsher backlash then they actually deserved? Humans are not perfect machines of reason, you know, even if I personally wish they were.
I just think it’s cool technology and always feel bad when someone gets piled on.
I didn’t mean to stir this shit up again.

I don’t know that being a victim of yourself is really a thing. The harsher backlash is a matter of opinion, and no I am not talking about the crazy death threat people… and no one said they had to be perfect. They’re not the first developer to oversell what they had, but their method of recovering from that position is… questionable.
None of this means they didn’t achieve something great on the back-end either way. But you don’t sell technology to gaming customers persay; you sell games to gaming customers, and that game fell short some/many.
Everything talked about is tech…the engine. The giant flaw in that is this was supposed to be a $60 GAME not a tech demo. I could care less what the technology is underneath if the game is just plain boring, utterly simplistic and becomes very repetitive after just a few hours. This should never have been hyped as a $60 AAA title. As a $15 indie game its not so bad but tha’ts not the road they chose to go.
It is when the whole thing becomes bigger than yourself or out of your control. And I’m not disputing the extent or nature of their own mistakes - just saying that you can be guilty and a victim at the same time, despite the “Exclusive OR” tendencies of the zeitgeist.
Oh.
I thought this thread came alive again because there was a new patch or something, but it’s more of, um, this. Anyone know if another content patch is likely?
Nope. The last official news on further updates was in December when they released the Foundation patch.
In the nine weeks since then our small team has been hard at work on development, testing and certification for the Foundation Update. It won’t be our biggest update, but it is the start of something.
This update will be the first small step in a longer journey.
It just seems like this thread should be getting somewhere. Yet somehow…
Yeah, I’d like to know more about what they’re doing. The first silence period was the right call in my opinion… but the current long silence doesn’t do them any favors. :(

I’ll let you know if Sean Murray says anything in the talk this afternoon.
They’re about due another cool update!
Oh man I thought it was an update announcement.
From what I can gather next update will have a rover maybe?
What they really should do is strip out the main quest center of the galaxy trip and go more dynamic open world. Remove the three alien races from infesting the entire galaxy and come up with a reason to go explore and survey planets for them or some galactic corporation/government/empire.
I approve of these suggestions. Make it so.

How about putting each player on a home planet, expanding the base building with some industry, and integrating Kerbal Space Program?
I strongly believe that in 1000 years there will not be an internet or nation states or an atmosphere or possibly any recognizably human life forms on this planet because we will have intermarried with the dolphins and moved into the oceans but those dolphumans will still be arguing about whether Sean Murray was a greedy asshole selling snake oil to gullible nerds or an underappreciated genius who was overrun by the heartless forces of video game populism.

Oops. The talk is during the same time as my company is hosting a mixer so I can’t go. It will be available to watch online soon, though, so I’ll report back then. In the meantime, apologies for reigniting the flame war. 🌋
