I’ve set my “Sure why the hell not” price at $5.

I am just waiting for it to show up in the humble monthly bundle. :p

I never had regrets on buying it at $60. It provided me with a sense of wonder and exploration that’s hard to describe. So at least for the short term, it was completely worth it.

Why didn’t I play it longer? Unfortunately, their combat is pretty terrible. Whether you’re fighting ships in space or the robots on the planet, the combat is just not satisfying in any way. And while exploration is nice, and that feeling of first seeing a new unique planet, like an ocean world, eventually you get to planets where you want to fight because the guardians are really protective, and it sucks that this part of the game is poor.

The thing that really killed this game for me was only having one biome per planet. That sapped so much of the fun from exploration as within a few minutes, you’ve basically seen all there is to see on a planet. There was never any wonder about what was over the next hill or beyond the horizon, because it was just more of the same.

yea, traveling from planet to planet made sense, but you quickly learn that moving away from your vehicle was just a way to make everything more tiring, has you had to walk back. So not only theres not reason to walk far from you ship than spitting distance, but was actually punished [you could continue walking and find a pilon and call your ship, but finding that is uncertain].

that taking off required a lot of plutonium was a huge “fuck you” to the player, making life miserable while exploring the cosmos

all this restrictions made so you could always land near some cave or some plutonium, take some of it, look around, go back to the ship. So much for exploration.

I’m fine with the “one biome per planet”, really. Because it makes me want to see the next planet. If a planet had multiple biomes, I’d have less of a reason to go visit different ones.

Still taking a look at this game. Anyone want to talk me in/out of it?

Just know what you’re getting going in. It’s an interesting thing, but not a lot of quality gameplay.

I think it’s a bit Marmite, you either love it or hate it. Personally I’m in the former category. I really like the exploration side of things and the fact Hello games still seems to be adding content to the game for free is a bonus. However it’s not everyone’s cuppa tea, so maybe watch a few lets play vids and decide if it’s up your street or not.

Good luck with your decision.

NMS has almost no replay value but makes amazing landscapes … the first time. Also has a pretty bangin soundtrack.

Best way to play is expecting never to play it ever again. If you’re one of those kinds where the “first five times” you learn the systems and then the “sixth” time you play for ‘real’, you’re going to hate NMS. Just jump in like you have one life.

Also if you do this, you may or may not want to play the ‘hardcore’ modes. Honestly because they jack up the requirements for some resources (it takes 100 plutonium to take off instead of 25 for example) it’s a painful grind through the randomized landscapes which may or may not provide you with the basic materials to even go forward. That may well be your cup of tea but this kind of goes against the “play it once and never again” attitude I’m trying to foster, so just be aware of the grind you’re setting yourself up for if you select survival or hardcore difficulty.

Also don’t expect to finish it. There’s really no point in trying to ‘complete’ the game.

It’s super relaxing when played from the couch on the PS4. Very chill game.

For what it’s worth, I think it’s one of the best survival/crafting sim games out there. I agree with @Gordon_Bleu: it’s a game about chilling out and you have to approach it with that mindset.

You make it sound like Euro Truck Simulator. Shallow but relaxing.

I like NMS and I think this is a fair comparison. Playing it on a hard difficulty seems contrary to that chill aspect for me.

In the last patch or so, they made some interesting changes to how you go about acumulating upgrades.

They used to be scattered around everywhere. It was really easy to amass a collection of upgrades for your ship, suit, and weapon. So much so, it reduced any feeling of planning and strategy.

Now they have a new currency of sorts called “Nanite Clusters”. You get these from Abandoned buildings, damaged machines, killed bad guys, etc. You can exchange them for upgrade blueprints on stations. There’s always a guy on the station that will sell you some but he will only sell it to you if your standing is high enough. Better upgrades cost more nanites and a higher standing. Different alien races specialized in different types of upgrades, I think.

I play on survival, and I found that this tweak has caused me to really think about not only what I should upgrade but spend time locing someone with the tech I want.

Also, Zinc used to be really difficult to find, making initial ship repairs tedious. Sentinals now drop Zinc.

I personally like the increase in Plutonium needed to launch. It makes it so you really want to scout your location a bit before you land. Do you really want to check out that ruin? Make sure you have enough Plutonium or at least see a few clusters on the ground. If you see a base with a landing pad, that’s huge because launching from a Pad requires no fuel.

Standard Disclaimer: I you hated NMS this will probably not change your mind.

Something changed in a recent patch. Before the patch i could play 2560x1440 at around 40-60fps. Now 1920x1080 is getting around 20fps. I had to try 1366x768 to get above 30fps.

They did improve the AA options and increased the texture detail off the top of my head. So it’s certainly possible that you might want to fiddle some with the settings.

I haven’t been following the whole ARG thingy they’ve been doing, but the important bit is that according to this the next big patch (1.3) is coming out in August.

Some have seen item descriptions that say you will be able to walk on asteroids. There’s also the name, Project Walking Titan? Are they adding mechs? I guess they’re not promising anything anymore, better keep it all vague, eh?

Awesome! I’ll be going back in to check it out.

They are promising that after the patch you will be able to log into a terminal and play ED or SC.
