Ok, that is good. Humble Bundle has it on sale for about $24 and I’m on the cusp of pulling the trigger. Knowing what the new patch/upgrade will provide could tip the scale.

Sure, that’s why i originally called it (a year or more ago, and i think before it was released!) basically a music video. And it still is. 65daysofStatic have a very unique, period of time sound that is so “iconic” that the gameplay of NMS seems secondary to the soundtrack of NMS.

But there’s sci fi and there’s sci fi. If you’re going for pure fantasy, just go pure fantasy; harvest Gold Wheat next to Emerald Trees and Zinc fisheries. But when they describe the Gold AS Zinc or in other words when they start using second level descriptions of science nonsensically, it just grates like fingernails on chalkboards. It’s the lack of awareness, not the fantastic elements, that’s grating.

Fantasy can tie itself to sci-fi just fine. It’s perfectly acceptable to have dragons with jetpacks and it’s perfectly acceptable to use technobabble and science-like language/concepts in a game like No Man’s Sky, even when they mean something somewhat different from what we know. You don’t have to go full fantasy or full hard sci-fi - you can mix and match freely, because that’s part of creative freedom. I can see how some of those things may be a pet peeve for you, but I don’t think there’s any sacred rule stating that such a thing can’t happen.

I turn off my “scientific mind” when I’m playing NMS, because it’s a sci-fi book cover. In reality, Plutonium isn’t a red crystal easily found in the surface, there is no sense in how Iron and Zinc could be used to replenish energy shields, and when you carve the base of one of those huge Gold monoliths you find in the surface of a few planets (yeah right), gravity should bring the whole thing down… and it doesn’t.

And that’s fine. It’s a pop sci-fi book cover, and pop sci-fi book covers have that kind of thing. For me it fits the game just fine.

Here’s the 1.3 email:

The story aspect may get me to finally pull the trigger on this one as it seems as if people got tired of things, and at least for me, story helps drive me through that portion of games (I’m pretty story-oriented, as I like to read a lot too)… I also still have my dad’s collection of just about all of the old Analog SF magazines boxed up in the garage, with all of the fantastic cover art and stories.

Yep, and the sale should last up till the patch releases, so we can get a feel if it fixed stuff. I myself am tempted at this price.

Do we get multiple save slots now?

I have to give NMS credit. It got me through a heck of a bad time. Last August, I was sick as hell for the second time in as many months, and it became “transplant talk time” ie. who knows if you’ll be here next month, be OK, or wearing someone else’s internal organs on vent as you recover.

It was annoying to play, because the hospital tv’s are tiny and toomfad away - tucked back on a high shelf. so it meant if I wanted to actually read anything (or see the little indicators) I had to stand outside my bed right in front of thT shelf (and I still had to squint). I should mention my lovely wife brought my PS4 in. That is probably the most “out of bed” time I’ve ever had in the hospital. I was in a lot of pain, and it was miserable, and I don’t want to go through it again, but it jump-started my recovery in a serious way. I didn’t realize how shallow the game was til I got home. See I imagined a lot more stuff was going on in the game graphically and behind the scenes. But since I couldn’t see much, my imagination filled in the rest. When I finally got home to play on my big tv (what a relief to sit and play!) I was surprised at how much I’d oversold the game on myself. I am very much looking forward to playing again and maybe I should start over?

Not yet, sorry. Sounds like you might benefit from a more consistent game display experience. Any chance of bringing one good-quality display along with you to these locations?

Well the patch notes are out sometime this week - there’s still hope!

If I had one - absolutely. Could set it up on the tray stand and it’d be pretty amazing.

Seen over on nGAF:

Exciting.

Release it already! I’m keen, now the decision is whether to scrap my save and begin again!

And what’s this? Low flight?

Humble sale is still going on, so I picked it up for $21.

Seems like 1.3 is the game state 1.0 should have been at. So I am pretty hyped to try it now. :D

#patientgamer

The hype got you eventually - I hope it lives up to it, after that extra year percolating! ;)

I think the base experience/core gameplay remains pretty similar, so someone who hated it a year ago isn’t likely to change their minds even with all the extras bolted around it.

But at least Sean Murray has finally fulfilled the multiplayer ‘promise’!

Also as is usual with such a big update, expect several hotfixes in the coming weeks.

Think there will be a steam sale anytime soon? I know about the humble bundle sale.

Likely the Halloween Sale in October.

GoG also has it fairly cheap too, $18.43

GoG is showing $23.99 for me.
