There are markers that appear on the radar in the ship when you’re flying around. Those don’t help? I usually find that if I’ve spent enough time on the planet, I start to recognize where I am.

Very helpful Thanks.

Anybody know how to do a quick down d pad select on the pc mouse & keyboard? I can’t figure out how to do the space ship shield recharge without using the menu method which is really slow

Interesting fauna I came across today. The second one is kinda cute!

Made it from the furnace planet I started on to a lush planet, populated by these:

I am thinking about grabbing this on Steam for $25. I really know nothing about it, becase last year when it launched I was still busy with Elite: Dangerous and didn’t pay much attention. So, not having read through this thread, I have a few questions:

–Is it online only?
–If so, it is difficult to avoid getting blown up by other players when all you want to do is fly around and explore?
–will it work with my HOTAS-X? What is the recommended control method for PC?

I found that you can set a waypoint on a structure by using your scanner on it. It leaves a big white dot waypoint. Now I just need to figure out how to get rid of them.

  1. Not really at all online
  2. You can’t fight other players only the AI
  3. M+K works well, not tried with a HOTAS. You will probably be spending more time on planets than flying. It’s not really a full flight model like in elite

Thanks for th quick reply. With regards to “not really at all online,” does that mean the procedurally generated galaxy in which you play is not shared, and is local to you only?

I think if you go to a planet not visited by someone else yet then it gets procedurally generated at that point. If someone has been there, of which there is a very small chance, then the landscape and animals would be the same.

They’re just now introducing an option to let you meet up with other players, but this is very rudimentary and will supposedly get more flushed out as work on the game progresses.

Remind me, was there some jetpack/sprint combo for zipping around the terrain faster? I vaguely remember there being some trick like bunny hopping or skiing or something.

It is preferable to play online, but you can play offline if you want. But you’ll potentially miss out on neat features so I don’t see why you would.

Everyone plays in the same procedural universe. When you discover something in the game (system/planet/flora/fauna), your ownership state is uploaded to the server (along with custom naming if you so choose). If other players stumble across these same planets they will see your name as the discoverer as well as the names you assigned to everything. Likewise if you stumble across something discovered by other players.

You can also find bases constructed by other players (if they enabled ‘sharing’ in the options), and access messages from them via their communications terminals.

They also just added physcial representation of up to 16 other players as glowing orbs, to start paving the way for more co-op features. Not sure on the specifics of this in terms of live updates of what other players are doing (don’t think it shows them building, mining, etc) but guessing it’s basic - the orbs glow green when other players are in their ships for example. It does have VoIP, which of course you can mute.

So there is no PVP at all, and no current plans for it - it’s not a griefers game. And seriously, the game is so huge there is a miniscule chance of even seeing another player unless you co-ordinate it externally, like providing co-ordinates to your base or joining a group like Galactic Hub Project.

Finally, I don’t think HOTAS is supported very well, if at all. Game is designed for a controller. It’s not really an Elite-style space sim, it’s a more casual mining and exploring kind of thing. Though of course it does have space combat against other ships, trading commodities, and doing missions for factions, they’re not the primary focus.

There is, and somewhat described it upthread. Hold on…

Found it!

Ah-ha, that was it! Thanks!

Thanks everyone, now it makes sense.

Cool. I’d imagine someone has configured it for a Steam controller by now.

So should I be following the story path or not? Just got to the juncture point, and I remember hearing lots of complaints about the resolution of the “center of the galaxy” thing being a bit disappointment. Am I missing anything awesome if I just meander about?

Overall, thus far, I’ve found it enjoyable in a relaxing sort of way. I haven’t been on too many planets, but they were pretty same-same so I’m hoping for more variety. Shuffling around inventory seems like a massive pain so I’m hoping there’s some quicker ways to manage things that I am missing. Why doesn’t stuff stack automatically, for example?

My understanding is that this has been extensively tweaked and revamped, if not expanded. But I can’t speak to it personally, as I wiped my original save prior to jumping back in yesterday after a ~9-month break.

So I finally fixed my ship. Yeah, I know, I’m a slow learner. Anyway, what should I do before I take off? Do I need extra plutonium? Should I expect to be attacked by pirates? How do I find a new planet?

I don’t care about spoilers, but simple help accepted.

Extra plutonium is always good! If there is some near your ship, grab it! Edit: also iron for recharging your pulse drive, but you can get that from asteroids if you run out.
