Nostalgia, Gaming, and You!

First, why this when they hold the secret to one of the best joysticks ever. Second, this looks nothing like the (awful) Neo CD controller.

Who are those guys claiming to be SNK?!

Yeah, that was a weird announcement, which I guess I kind of expected, because SNK really struggles to understand their niche sometimes.

That said, I’ve spent some time with that Neo Geo Mini and it’s damn good. The screen is impressive. I’m very happy with that purchase.

I would’ve rather seen a nice ~$30 release of those Neo-Geo USB controllers that cost more like $50 to import. But I already have arcade sticks.

Hey y’all, do y’all know if it’s possible to control a Wii without its sensor bar?

The sensor bar is pretty much just 2 infrared LEDs. So yeah, but you do need something similar.

I managed with two candles once

IIRC, people reported that incandescent Christmas lights worked.

I think you might need exactly 2 and to mask the others, otherwise it may get it’s location reset when it sees the next one.

Reviews are out today for the Sega Genesis Mini and they are great.

DF Retro review arrives this weekend, but definitely keeping my pre-order for this.

Hmmm, I may get this just to play:

  • Castlevania: Bloodlines
  • Shining Force
  • Phantasy Star 4: The End of the Millennium
  • Wonder Boy in Monster World
  • Streets of Rage 2
  • Columns
  • Vectorman

The game selection is amazing. There are few in that list that don’t deserve at least a cursory look. If you do get one, be sure to play…

  • Thunder Force III
  • Alisia Dragoon
  • Contra: Hard Corps
  • Gunstar Heroes
  • Shinobi III
  • Beyond Oasis
  • Dynamite Headdy

…if you haven’t.

The kids are alright:

A Wolf3D-alike on a stock A500, 1MB. 10-14 FPS. (Reminder: stock M68000. 7.14Mhz.)

It’s like that old “is rock & roll dead” thread that surfaces here from time to time. As long as there’s one ADHD-addled computer kid out there: metal-banging on obsolete hardware will never die.

Is Warriors of the Eternal Sun on that list?

It is not. I don’t think they could have gotten that license, which is a shame.

That said, there are some licensed games in there, specifically the Mickey ones which are excellent. Here’s the full list again for the US version. It’s different if you’re in Japan, or Asia.

  • Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Ecco the Dolphin
  • Castlevania: Bloodlines
  • Space Harrier 2
  • Shining Force
  • Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine
  • ToeJam & Earl
  • Comix Zone
  • Altered Beast
  • Gunstar Heroes
  • Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse
  • World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck
  • Thunder Force 3
  • Super Fantasy Zone
  • Shinobi 3
  • Streets of Rage 2
  • Earthworm Jim
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 2
  • Contra: Hard Corps
  • Landstalker
  • Mega Man: The Wily Wars
  • Street Fighter 2: Special Champion Edition
  • Ghouls ’n Ghosts
  • Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
  • Beyond Oasis
  • Golden Axe
  • Phantasy Star 4: The End of the Millennium
  • Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball
  • Vectorman
  • Wonder Boy in Monster World
  • Tetris
  • Darius
  • Road Rash 2
  • Strider
  • Virtua Fighter 2
  • Alisia Dragoon
  • Kid Chameleon
  • Monster World 4
  • Eternal Champions
  • Columns
  • Dynamite Headdy
  • Light Crusader

One game I think is a big miss with this device is Shining in the Darkness. I also think given our obsession (or indie game makers’ obsession) with roguelikes, that they should have had Fatal Labyrinth in there. I’d probably insert those and remove Virtua Fighter 2 and Light Crusader, and I like Light Crusader.

If there is Road Rash 2, it’s quite sad there isn’t Starflight.
If there is Thunder Force III, it’s a bit criminal there isn’t Thunder Force II and Herzog Zwei.
If there is Phantasy Star 4, it’s tragic there isn’t Phantasy Star 2.

Road Rash 2: He Who Holds the Chain

NHL '94. Yes, I know its not exclusive, but I still want it on there.

Ah, was that the one with the fisticuffs? Such a great time.

Controversial opinion alert. NHLPA 93 was superior to NHL 94. There was just too much randomness in 94 regarding scoring, so it devolved in relaying on one-timers.

Not controversial. I agree. ‘93 was the better game.
