To answer your question Tom, I think Sunless Skies is in every way an improvement on Sunless Seas, and is one of those games I’ve already marked down to remember in December for GOTY consideration.
Ah, good. I don’t recall who it was, but I just remember ducking into the thread real quick – I still know next to nothing about Sunless Skies – and skimming across a few posts basically saying the game didn’t take advantage of the sky concept and that it might as well have been Sunless Seas.

Oh, in that regard yes, the skies might as well be seas for the most part.
But it takes that Sunless Seas concept and makes some very worthwhile changes and expands things to make it wider and more explorable and also a little less ready to kill you from the jump and let you kind of get your footing in the world.

Total War: Warhammer 2 was a Request Wednesday winner. Skaven weren’t so bad! I guess I didn’t really get to the point where the game pushes back, though. What ends up making the skaven difficult? Something about their available units, or maybe something on the strategic map?

Well – it pushes back on the Vortex campaign pretty darn quick after that last battle. Tom keep that on your hard drive. I thought your Skaven campaign went well.

Skaven T1 infantry and ranged are bottom of the barrel trash, and the later infantry while better lose to tier equivalents. They don’t get the units/tools to deal with many unit types until later on, and even then, their units are very mono-focused making them difficult to use.
In return, they get probably the best artillery in the game, and some of the best spammable spells in the game. It’s all about preventing your line from collapsing while raining stuff on dudes (friendly fire encouraged) and your mono-focused units target the correct enemy.
Strategically, Skaven are handicapped by the food mechanic (cities are food negative until high tier buildings can recover) which can be hard to get ahead of. Queek is the easiest because he starts near pasture resources (food), he buffs your shit infantry so they become acceptable, and also makes them cheaper. Also tanks well.
