OMG Why hasn't anyone said anything about Splinter Cell 2

Ok maybe I’m just gettting too excited, but after watching some of the gameplay movies for the multplay game on ign.com I can’t help but say HOLY@#$@!$ I can’t wait to play it. It looks sooo awesome

EB lists it as simultaneous release for all three consoles and the PC. True? If so, yay for PC online multiplayer out of the gate!

Cause it’s not really Splinter Cell 2 maybe?? :)

We are talking about it, but we’re mostly referring to it as “Thief 3” these days.

OMG Why hasn’t anyone said anything about Splinter Cell 2

Because the first one was suck, except for the cool bird shadows?

Wrong. Circle gets the square.

Plenty has been said, but just not here. I’m looking forward to it, and I know on good authority that you can get a free tshirt if you preorder at Gamestop.

What t-shirt size do you take? [ducking]

Because the gameplay movies just look like MOTS, but with multiplayer? (yawn)

Splinter Cell was like Ubi’s best selling title in the recent past. Did you expect them to totally change the formula in the sequel and make a different gmae?

but with multiplayer? (yawn)

I take it you’ve witnessed the MP mode and did realize that this a bit more fun than a bunch of Sam Fishers shooting each other in deathmatch?

Looks fantastic, got it pre-ordered particularly for the new multiplayer mode.

Single player does look very pretty from what has been shown, but I hope the robotic AI, and level scripting is fixed to allow a bit more variation in what you can and can’t do to accomplish the missions. Splinter Cell 1 felt more like a puzzle game than ‘Stealth Action Redefined’. Some neat hoops to jump through, but very little tact required on behalf of the gamer.

I pre-rdered the PS2 version only because I don’t think my PC would run it very well. This is the first such decision I’ve had to deal with since I got my PS2.

One thing to note: There is a time exclusive. The XBox gets it later this month, while the Cube and PS2 get it June 11th. I don’t know about the PC date, however.

You, sir, are the suck.

As far as I know, the PC version will be out at the same time, or shortly after, the Xbox version. I have a version of it with what appears to be final, or near-final, single player, and multiplayer that has all the Xbox control references still in it.

Sure, I’d expect more of the same, but I can hardly get excited about it.

Are there gameplay movies showing more than deathmatch? In the movies I watched, all I saw was a bunch of Sam Fishers running around and shooting one another.

Not that it matters. Console multiplayer is a waste of development time, IMO. They should be spending that time improving the game. Sure, the final game may be impressive in its own right and filled with content. But you know that if they hadn’t decided to throw in a multiplayer mode, there’d probably be more - more features, more levels, more polish.

In fact, my response to the topic question was a little longer than it needed to be. New succint version:

OMG Why hasn’t anyone said anything about Splinter Cell 2

Because it’s multiplayer.

I wanted to make a correction on my first post: I mistakenly said the PS2 & Cube versions were releasing on June 11th. My mind skimmed too quickly on what month it was last night. It’s supposed to be May 11th. My apologies.

I don’t get that. Why? Apparently it’s not your bag, but there are millions of people who like this aspect. It does add a lot of replay value to a title in a genre that traditionally doesn’t have a lot (of replay worth.)

I guess I just compare console multiplayer to PC multiplayer, and it inevitably comes up short. PC multiplayer games can maintain interest for years. You have new tweaks and levels and mods keeping the game fresh. Xbox Live can do patches and the occasional new level, but the whole thing seems sort of sterile.

I don’t see how anyone could maintain interest in these games when nothing ever changes. You’ll have the same weapon balance in the same gameplay modes on the same maps. That’s why it seems like console multiplayer games lose their appeal after a few months (no proof of this, just an assumption based on secondhand accounts).

And sure, you’d get a few months of fun out of it, but that’s only if you buy upon release and don’t spend too much time on other games. For the developer and publisher and retailer, it’s good that you tire of the game fairly quickly so that you’ll buy something new. As a gamer, I’d rather get more gameplay out of fewer titles, and I hate the ‘limited time offer’ feel I get from these multiplayer games.

It’s very rare for me to buy a game and immediately play it to completion; nearly every game I buy gets shelved for months or even years before I’m finished with it. And when a game’s only going to have a shelf-life of a few months, it’s often not worth the money to purchase it at all. So I’d rather have a great single-player game than a decent single-player game with multiplayer.

I’ve read about the creative things that SC2 is doing with XBox Live and the multiplayer component. I’m wondering how much the PC multiplayer will suffer or if the XBox Live neat stuff will just be a gimmick.

I’ve been waiting for this for a while now. Just finished playing the bonus missions I got from Live for the first one. Even after it’s been out for a while it’s a great looking/playing game. I’m glad to see they didn’t sacrifice the Xbox version for the other 2 platforms and that it’s going to look even better. The Live multiplayer looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun and knowing Ubi I’m sure there will be more bonus content down the road.

Have you played CS lately? Just count how many different maps people play most of the time. The total is somewhere around 2 or 3. Also, R63 is still going strong on Live, so your assupmtion would be wrong.
