I’m not sure I understand your layout, here. You’ve got a single point of entry to the access lift, but the hangar placement still gives the aliens free run of the base.
I never have a problem with Alien base invasions, other than i don’t like the access lift in the center. My first base nearly always becomes the least defensible as it is by nature of being first a jack-of-all-trades base, and i save my later bases for the more invasion secure layouts. I need most of the space in this first base, i’ll probably use it all, and i just hope they never come here (my other future bases will become the more active so that should give me cover here).
What sort of layout do you use for your first base?
I just use the default usually, I don’t bother to tear it down. I’ve never really believed it’s necessary.
I was just a bit confused by your layout because it seemed like you went halfway there.
You will probably like that in this OpenXcom, you have an option to create your first base layout, so no tearing down required. And yes my first base is pretty much always a mess until i get more online and can specialize.
Wasn’t the run-of-the-mill layout for a base with three hangars

Does OpenXcom work with the Steam version of the original game?
I’ve had a few UFO runaway now and they stay on the map until they fall out of range of my radar’s, so no i’ve not seen them just vanish if that was what you were seeing. I’ve even lost one from radar, sent my Interceptor to the last known location then picked it up again on my crafts radar, so they stick around for me as per usual game. Steam version maybe? (just going on a thought after TheWombat posted his question).
For everyone, re the default very slow plasma shot speed on the aliens turn, go into the menu when in the tactical battle section and you will see the setting on the second slowest speed, so move it up a couple of notches for less ‘slow-mo’.
Oh duh, forgot about that.
Yes, the windows installer will detect it.
I’ll have to try again and see if it was a fluke. Thank you.
The installer didn’t find mine, but i have Steam installs on two drives. It was easy to direct it to the right location though.
Does OpenXcom use resources from the original or something? Otherwise why should it care if you have some other version of XCOM installed, or not for that matter. Will it still work without any other XCOM game installed?
Take a look at the screenshots upthread.
OpenXcom is not Xenonauts; it is basically an update of the original game and yes uses the original resources in a retouched form, meaning you’re at least going to get an “are you an owner of the original game” check. (I doubt OpenXCom actually directly uses the files in the X-Com dir, though)
Oh, OK, so it’s like OpenTTD was before it went 1.0. That game needed graphics from the original game prior to 1.0, but since then it’s been completely standalone.
So wait, does this game need the original xcom installed to be playable? It looks like an interesting project, and I was thinking about downloading it to give the original xcom a try in light of the new one being rather well received.
Yes, to both those last posts.
Bah humbug. I guess I’ll keep my eyes on the project and see how it works out. If I get my hands on a copy I’ll give it a download.
I feel your pain. No gamer (PC) anywhere in the world should be without a copy of the original Xcom. And this OpenXcom is just icing on an already awesome cake. Sorry.
Nah, I’m to young to have really been around pc gaming when xcom was out. I’ll just keep an eye out for a copy somewhere.
There’s absolutely no excuse not to simply buy it on steam.
Its 5 bucks without sale and frequently on sale, if not Steam than elsewhere. Very much recommended compared to the majority of other games and with this tweaker its pretty much fantastic. Although that being said I rage quitted last night…
