OpenXcom

Additionally, the original X-Com had a ton of bugs that really affect the way the game works. Just look it up in the xcom wiki to see how many there were. OpenXcom has fixed all of these bugs. Xenonauts seems to be following the exact same design as X-Com but with perhaps less of X-Com’s original charm. Had there not been an OpenXcom, I would have said that Xenonauts is the next best thing. But with the existence of OpenXcom, I feel like Xenonauts is mostly obsolete. The high res art is ok but nothing spectacular, and from what I last heard, there were fewer features than x-com. At the very least, they should drop the price to the $5-10 range.

More pissy noises about Xenonauts and its neverending dev cycle; I should have taken the refund option when it was offered. OpenXCom pretty much covers exactly what I wanted an X-Com redux to do.

Pretty sure Im going to get Xenonauts when its released and will probably switch back and forth between the two. I do like that the former plans to add a lot more basic weapons to the game which probably/hopefully bodes well for those equipment discovered through research.

I’ll be getting Xenonauts as well when it is done. Here is a nice let’s play series of it, to see it in action (bugs and all), that i found on their forums:

It really is just X-COM minus the annoying bugs. If you don’t want to replay the original X-COM then OpenXcom is not for you (not yet anyway). It’s fabulous for new players through, or guys like me reliving their youth (I always keep a specially named save slot as homage to a dear old friend of mine who introduced me to the game and with whom I thwarted many alien invasions). Getting this thing to run on a modern machine is stupidly simple: Buy X-COM on Steam and install. Download OpenXcom. OpenXcom automatically detects your Steam install, installs in the proper place and generates a desktop shortcut.

Speaking of OpenXcom and old bugs: Anyone knows if the transit-during-end-of-month-and-don’t-pay-wages still works?

That’s a dirty trick, and one i never used. Not sure if it is a fixed bug in openxcom. And just a quick update for those that may not have bookmarked the site, they have updated things so you have a more usable inventory system plus other stuff:

Following that link, the dev mentions a neat looking game on his blog: Isomer

Looks like a reverse X-Com to me where you are the one invading. Base building and minecraft like resource gathering as well. Nothing to play yet but it’s on my radar.

Hmmm… lots of bug fixes since 0.90 release. They need to get another official distro up.

What can I say? I’m a dirty little cheat. Truth be told, I haven’t even tried to use it. There’s too much going on for my feeble little brain to keep track of when it’s almost the 1st of month.

And thanks for the update.

I was never meaning you might be a dirty little cheat! Just that well, is that a well known thing to do? I was playing X-com before doing much internet, so i just had no idea you could do that. I could have saved so many games if i had known about it!!!

Like scharmers i am just waiting for the proper update, although i hope they have thought the new inventory thing through. Some of the comments seemed fair, it could be a huge game cheat if you can carry lots of stuff around/access it while in mission etc?

The X-COM Ufopaedia site has an extensive list of bugs and exploits. Truth be told, my skills improve far more from reading about the game mechanics than any exploits I don’t have the patience to use anyway.

I don’t have time to test this out myself, but they are close to a 1.0 release and have a new AI for people to test out, which could be cool for those that might like to try it out:http://openxcom.org/index.php/2013/10/new-ai-ready-for-testing/

a bit more news on the 1.0 release (not quite there yet):

And some odd stuff about OpenXcom being on mobile and browsers? curious (just get 1.0 out already please…):

And something a couple of weeks old on a new save screen:

Still on 0.9 currently.

A little update on the new game options:

http://openxcom.org/index.php/2014/03/so-many-options/

Hmm, looks like I’ll have the game for a spin yet again.

Still on 0.9 release though :(

I haven’t been following that closely (like i rarely check the forums), but that ‘new’ Mods tab in the new menu options certainly got my interest. I guess they are looking to add in a layer of modification? That would be incredibly awesome for an already awesome game like X-com.

A new stream, showing of some of the new graphical options etc:

Sounds like they are getting close…and adding more stuff:
