That’s a Dune reference, right?

You haven’t read Dune or seen the movie or the modern remake of the movie in crappy TV miniseries form?

My mind can’t wrap itself around the notion that someone isn’t sure if something worms and spice is a Dune reference.

Yes, Yes, and No.

It was a rhetorical question meant to showcase that “I was in the know,” as it were. First person to call Dune reference.

It’s an odd comic. Falling back on a Dune joke seems rather a cop-out, even though OOTS does sometimes do that. The title, though, almost seems to suggest he felt he needed to pump something out.

After all the plot heavy strips of the end of the previous book, these new ones seem rather shallow in comparison. Random desert encounters, so to speak.

A week and a half for a Dune joke. Hm.

It’s a bit bemusing, but only because the obviously correct Dune gag is: Belkar is the little death that brings total obliteration.

hahahaha

Eh, I can’t complain about any comic with Belkar in it.

You forgot the two PC games. Everyone should have played Dune 2 if they were gaming back in those days.

Let’s give him lots of credit, and assume that he’s making the meta-point that random encounters are a stupid/shallow mechanism within the game.

will we also get to see what the eye color changing spice is going to do to belkar? or will it just be a tossed away bit?

Brief recurring gag bit in the next strip or one soon after and then tossed away. I’ll bet the worm fight amounts to more in some way, though.

I vaguely remember purple worms being a nasty monster but couldn’t tell you more than that.

live bait

belkar!

SPOILER!

V can charm a 16 hit die monster?

Purple worms have crappy (~+4) Will saves and no MR, and they didn’t engage it in combat yet, so sure.

So, what’s Belkar reading?

The Monster Manual (or whatever) I assume.

Or possibly Dune.

Fail!

Win!

Alas poor Dr. Yueh. BTW, the board game Dune is one of the all time great board games if you have 6 players who know what they’re doing.
