I don’t get Roy’s story - so he gets sand kicked in his face and then he’s talking to an old guy… what’s happening here?

It’s not Roy getting sand in the face, his skin is darker and those are not his boots. We’re just shown Belkar and Roy doing more of the same they were already doing when we last saw them. Belkar is being mean to the other gladiators and Roy is listening to an old survivor.

Burlew probably just didn’t have any more room for them but didn’t want to leave them out altogether.
