It was a reference to Haley.
Ah, of course. That makes more sense.

Hmmm - a cake here - a hungry dragon there - an evil despot sipping wine - contemplating a change is in order.
On second thought - no cake for me, thank you very much.
“That would be beneath our love, honey.”
Now I’m confused, because while all the readers know that Haley’s dad is in jail with Roy, I don’t recall when Haley figured that out.
She’s always known where her dad was being held. I am kind of surprised that she didn’t mention it to anyone before now. Or did she?
She always knew it was Tyrinnaria, but she didn’t seem to realize that the Empire of Blood was the erstwhile Tyrinnaria until Elan’s recent revelations. I’m a bit confused by this myself. Perhaps she just assumes her Dad will be in jail.
Presumably it’s not exactly a secret that Tyrinnaria became the Empire of Blood?
Sure, Elan was too daft to be aware of the name change, but presumably most of the other characters did – only they don’t know about her dad.

There’s an earlier strip (beginning of the arc, before they head into the desert for the first time) where it’s explained that country names change so fast that it’s impossible to tell where Tyrannaria is now. So the whole ‘where is Tyrannaria’ question was parked until just recently.
Of course, that explanation has some extra layers now we know that the nomenclatural fluidity isn’t accidental.
Elan asked about it, and presumably told Haley during their background conversation.

I was wondering the same thing. Did we miss something?

Elan asked about it, and presumably told Haley during their background conversation.
Elan (and only Elan) knows that Haley was looking for Tyrinaria, where her father is imprisoned. Waaaaaay back in 680, the two of them try and find it on a map, only to learn that the country names change so often that finding a modern map with that name is not going to happen.
Then in 758, Tarquin explains to Elan that he and his band are partially responsible for the recent name-changes. In the second-to-last frame, he mentions offhand that the Empire of Blood was named “Tyrinaria” at one point. The first frame of 759 is Elan reacting to the name. Presumably, in 764 he’s telling Haley the news (my bet: frame #5).
And no, I am not so much a geek that I could remember all that stuff from two years ago. I only found this strip through this very thread and read them all last month. OK, I don’t know if the previous sentence proves that I am not geeky after all.

WHAT I DON’T UNDERSTAND
Just kidding, that’s a very nice clear explanation.

But where is the birth certificate?

Tarquin has become my all-time favorite evil overlord. His awareness of genre tropes, his sense of the dramatic, his humor, and his intellect are an incredible combination.

Plus his secret weapon - an odd kind of humility, in that he knows he’s going to get beaten by a hero eventually and is just in it for the most he can get before then.

Some strips have antiheroes. This strip has an antivillain.
