Pacific Rim Uprising - Finn and kaiju

I dunno. If you go to see a movie where big robots beat up big monsters, you won’t be disappointed. The story is terrible, but who goes to a Pacific RIm movie for the story?

The movie was atrociously bad. Even the action was subpar.

But did your son like it?

He actually said it was just OK, and that the first one was better.

Granted, same kid who likes Transformers 5 and Last Jedi so his taste in movies is suspect.

My kid says he likes every movie I take him to …even the ones he horribly fidgets in…think he just wants to make me happy.

Wasn’t this project cancelled twice and went through several directors? I suppose it is not a surprise it is awful. I enjoyed the first one.

Looks like box office receipts were tepid last week, and even lower than the original film’s, but international revenues will still put it over the top. Sigh. I hope GDT comes back for the third entry. It’ll have an even crappier title, like Attack of the Precursors.

I still wanna know where the weird porn parody Pacific Rimming is.

Oh, if there ever was a Hollywood film made for the Chinese market, this is it.

Wasn’t this movie really only made because of the Chinese market and they threw a lot of money at to get it done. I was excited for it when I first heard about it, but was really disappointed after seeing it the other day. It was just so generic and bland.

I liked the first - I am a sucker for giant fucking robots smashing giant fucking monster with giant fucking tanker ships - and was surprised to find out today that I enjoyed the second one even more.

Boyega was better written and more charismatic than Charlie Hunnam, the Amara girl was likeable, I liked the story twist and the combat scenes were insane in the best “return to my Power Rangers liking childhood” way. And almost all of it took place during the day so I could properly enjoy those, too.

I am honestly looking forward to third film if it gets made and improves further.

Utterly forgettable and loved the first

I finally got around to watching this. It was very disappointing. I love the first film; it has a lot of heart, and the world building, provided almost entirely through set dressing and props, is great. It’s goofy, and inane, and that’s totally fine. It really “gets” what you want from giant robots vs monsters, and the kaiju genre.

The sequel … not so much. I think the sequel drew more from the feeling of Power Rangers or Transformers, less from giant monster beat 'em ups. It had some interesting twists on the story, but it delivered them poorly. To set anything up in the movie, characters would literally say “Remember when …” in order to deliver some details of something that happened in the first film. I mean, I know the first film didn’t do that well, so if your sequel’s storyline hinges entirely on events of that film, find a better way to deliver that info to a new audience than exposition that isn’t even real exposition, but is verbal flashback.

It also had, weirdly, like two parallel storylines. In theory, one fed in to the other, but they felt so tonally distinct, and weirdly connected that it felt like they had two stories they wanted to tell, and just chopped both of them in half and kind of taped over the middle.

And as I said above - the feel of the film was very different. The characters were less playful; maybe they tried to make them fun, but it failed hard. The robot vs robot and robot vs monster fights were too lightweight to feel as good as the first one. In the first, these were plodding, heavy things duking it out. This one had them literally doing jump kicks. And every time a robot did anything but walk, they made sure to give us a slow motion view of the robot, and then the pilots.

I dunno. Just about everything in this film fell flat. Fortunately, it looks like it failed pretty hard (worse than the original), so we don’t have to see it go further downhill. I just got the UHD version of the original to go with our new TV, so I’ll just watch that one again with Dolby Vision and pretend this sequel didn’t happen.

P.S. Man, the first one looks really good in 4k with DV.
