Painkiller walkthrough

That Holy Item is right in front of a stone ladder that gets you up to that last ammo box. If you don’t get to it before the floor collapses, you are screwed. I also found the ammo by circling around the building before going in under the falling blocks, but still missed 2. I’ll have to replay the level. I guess the Castle gives you x4 damage card, which is definitely worth finding all 7 of those holy items. But I’ve heard City on Water’s 6 secrets are the hardest card to get because of some of the jumping required.

On my fifth try (and I have no idea how) beat necrogiant in 1:33. I ignored the minions until they were really grouped up, and then I just lawnmowered them quickly with the painkiller. I hit the slow/half damage cards at 1 minute and just did the same shotgun to the nuts strategy.

(btw, I love this game)

Any tips on how to beat the giant hammer-wielding boss? I’ve tried a half-dozen times and and have gotten nowhere even close to destroying the hammer, let alone the boss himself.

I was having trouble until I figured out I could avoid his initial attacks by jumping just before his hammer hit the ground.

I haven’t finished it yet (I’m on the Docks right now), but I think I’m beginning to figure out the “mythology” of this game, and it’s pretty clever. I’m looking forward to this “Hell” level everyone raves about.

I can’t remember if I had the 4x damage card at that point, but I know I at least had the 2x damage. That, the dexterity card (fire 2x as fast) and the card to boost the duration of your gold card uses (and once you get it, the silver card(s) that allow multiple gold card uses) made short work of the hammer boss. Made short work of Alistar too.

I only have two cards–Endurance and the card that makes souls stick around longer.

Every time I sit down to play Painkiller (still on E1L3) my mouse inadventently clicks on UT2K4. I can’t help it-- I think I’m possessed.

Allow me to bring the “complete newbie” element to the thread. I just started the game a few nights back and finished the first level (graveyard) with only one of four secrets found. Even better, I have no idea what the one secret I found even was.

What constitutes a secret on that level and where the heck are they?

When you walk into a secret area, it will actually say “Secret Area!” at the top of the screen along with a sound effect. If you wander into one in the heat of battle (somehow) then you could have just not noticed the indications. The levels with cards that involved finding all the secrets are the ones I didn’t even try for though, as some of the secret areas are ridiculous to find.

Where are they? Well, that’s a secret.

regarding the Hammer Boss, is it necessary to destroy his hammer first? The guy in the video did that, but it seems like you’d never get the tarot card if you did it that way, as it would take too long.

I am on the bridge level but I think I may have run into a scripting error. I was kicking major ass against the sword dudes, but then I just got to a point where I couldn’t do anything else. No one left to kill, no where left to explore. I found a set of stairs that took me all the way to the top of a tower, but the door at the top is locked. I have gone out under the bridge where the big pipe is, but I can’t figure out how to get back up. I got frustrated and quit because it was late. I will try again tomorrow and see if I can figure out where I went wrong.

Worst comes to worst, you can always use pkgod mode to kill the bosses you get stuck on. You can still earn cards that way, as long as you manage to fulfill the original requirements for the card.

Ha! It was a scripting bug on the snowy bridge level. The door never opened, so I had to replay it over. I think you have to be careful to trigger each of the red pentagram auto quick save things. I ignored the one on the other side of the pipe and got trapped in the level twice. There are a few people having this problem, too, from what I can see from googling.

One thing to keep in mind–there is no reason not to use the red pentagram autosave points the moment they appear. They always point you in the right direction for the next part of the level, but using them never closes off the part you just finished, so there’s no need to wait even if you want to look around the area before you move on.

Yeah, I ignored one last night (in Babel) to go look around for ammo, and when I came back it was gone. Must be a bug (?)

btw, I only found 89/95 ammo needed for the card, grrrr…

Neat thing about this game, like Diablo 2, you can replay areas to try and meet the requirements to get the tarot card. I went back and played E1L2 last night and “destroyed all objects” and got the Haste card. It was interesting too, in that you can’t find all objects without finding all the secret areas. Two of the secret areas didn’t open up (doors were locked) until you completed the level, and got the glowing exit sphere. Instinct is to jump into the pretty, shiny sphere… but the game opens all doors behind you and lets you go back and explore. It was fun counting down the objects needed to get the card, and finally finding that last one.

Anyone else discover the Electrodriver combo? Use it by firing the electricity, then while you’re holding down to fire the energy arc, left-click as if you were shooting a shuriken.

What happens is a large shirken gets shot out that acts as a temporary proximity turret-mine. Any monster walking within a couple feet of it will instantly get struck by electricity just as powerful as the normal secondary fire. It’s actually a better weapon than the rocketlauncher at crowd control–just shoot the Electrodriver combo at your feet, turn around and run backward, and watch as the monsters run right into your trap!

True, but keep in mind that that combo uses a TON of electricity (from your secondary ammo count).

Is there a timing trick to getting that combo off? I can only pull it off like one out of three times. best weapon against a horde though.

Shoot the secondary fire first, then click the primary while shooting the secondary. If you have 75+ electricity, it’ll work like a charm.

Oh yeah, I beat Painkiller on Insomnia today. Excellent game. I think I got all but 5 or 6 of the cards.

I am secretly punching you.
