I feel like I succeeded when I hit the endgame maps. :D

Also, if you look around the Path of Exile forums, there is a guy who makes builds that are very solid and don’t require frantic buttonpresses/flask use to succeed. That’s because he has some physical issues that prevent him from doing that kind of stuff. The builds are good, though, and have multiple layers of defense while not sacrificing too much offense. Maybe not the top in min-max terms but I’ve certainly enjoyed using them before. So there is hope for people like you and me!

Yeah, I have to pick and choose builds that are for mere mortals. I have no interest in (or ability to) challenge the top level content like the elite streamer types, so builds that give me 80% even of what is there are pretty attractive.

FYI, folks, the guild stash map tab has been updated. They’re in order, one of each map in tier 1-5 with blank spaces left for the ones I didn’t have. Each tier is alphabetical, same as they show in the map stash tab, so you should be able to find whatever you’re looking for by just going down the list.

The banners no longer provide immunity, just damage reduction so overlapping immortality flags should not be a problem after the patch in 20 minutes or so.

Not to mention organs being auto-pickup and fixes for several fairly common bugs, including the crashes from legion generals. Sounds like a fantastic patch.

I’ve never used the beastiary very much other than the quest they make you do when you first meet the dude. However once I realized there were recipes for creating the different type of flask suffixes I’ve been doing that a lot. This morning I tried a couple times to do a flask and I kept getting killed like instantly. It wasn’t until I died maybe three or four times that I looked at the monster being spawned and realized they were level 69 when my guy is level 31. Oops!

I’m still a little fuzzy on how this works. When you pick a recipe that spawns generic monsters does it only pick from monsters you have killed in game? The recipe shows “any level 20 creature “so I thought it would generate random level 20 creatures for me to kill.

Also wanted to say I’ve been playing around with an essence drain build and I don’t know if it’s my lack of coordination or what, but whenever I try this build it feels so fiddle. I have terrible aim so I’m always missing when I try to shoot essence drain.

Every once in a while I read about how great essence drain is so I try to build, and I give up around the same point always. So either I don’t understand how to play it, or I’m too uncoordinated to play it, or it’s maybe just not a good build for me!

They are the beasts that you previously captured with Einhar in the same league (or a merged league), so the stronger ones you must have collected with a previous character.

They’re using projectile modifiers like Multiple Projectiles, Volley, Pierce, Chain, Fork, or Nova, or else the combo with Contagion that spreads the ED debuff. You could do ED + LMP + Curse on Hit + Decay with Contagion for your main damage, or ED + Cast on Crit + Contagion for example.

Soulrend is somewhat easier to use than ED because it auto-targets and always pierces. I played an ED + Contagion Trickster that transitioned to Soulrend + GMP for clearing and Bane for boss kills.

RE: strong monsters in beastiary.

Yeah, I have another character that’s level 73 ish so she captured them. So that explains the issue.

As far as the ED build goes: I’m using Zizarin’s guide that has ED and Contagion on separate links so (as I understand it) you cast Contagion and you then shoot ED separately.

Just a note on Bestiary, if you see that you have any of the following recipes active:
Split an Item Into Two
Modify Mods on an Item (Add Suffix / Remove Prefix OR Add Prefix / Remove Suffix)
Create an Imprint

Those are used by people doing high end crafting and worth mucho cash (1ex to 2ex). Einhar sells an orb (for a chaos) that can turn the enabling beast into a tradable item.

The boss beasts also are worth quite a bit, though running them is more entertaining.

Not being sarcastic - why does this developer seem to resist so hard putting an actual auction house/trading vehicle into the game itself?

It has been so long with this goofy side website thing, that at this point they obviously have some reason for not doing it. What is that reason? It can’t be because they don’t want trading, because there is trading now, it’s just made much more of a pain in the ass.

They’ve got some interviews from the past few months about it you can find if you want, but I think it’s in a larger Q&A with fans they did somewhere.

They (and some other ARPG devs) are of the opinion that auction houses make trading and therefore acquiring items too easy. They see this as undermining one of the main points of this kind of game. I think a lot of ARPG devs look at what happened with Diablo 3 and see that as a cautionary tale. So the PoE devs want trading as one of their core principles from when they started the game, but don’t want it easy enough that looting items from the ground no longer feels valuable, and they don’t see an easy way to accomplish that balance.

Now the current web site is not that far off from an auction house. They sound like they’re of the opinion that they shouldn’t have let it get this close and never intended to, but they made an trade API to let the community play with and the community ran away with it and made very advanced tools. They figured they needed to compromise and made the web site, but feel like they now need to draw a line in the sand before they compromise their way into a full auction house.

I feel like they’ve been fairly consistent on the above for the past year or so, but not on exactly what their future plans are for trading. They have indicated they may make minor improvements in the near future if time permits, but that PoE 2 is a higher priority.

All that said, they otherwise recently said that in the next several months they’re going to roll out fundamental improvements to how loot drops to make that side of things feel more impactful. I think they described it as having many fewer items drop but the items be much more impactful, with the goal that people want to look at an identify rare drops much of the time instead of just assuming that what they can trade for will always be better.

Edit: This post is fairly old and lengthy but still covers it.

Edit 2: Shouldn’t have said this was clear, it’s been consistent but only clear if you follow interviews.

Got a rematch against Drox earlier, and won it easily. Amazing how much difference an invulnerability-fix patch makes! Plus the skeletons are doing a lot more damage now that they’re back to strictly physical damage. I added the Pride aura, too, since there was an Essence Worm just sitting in the guild stash.

I’m starting to get some red maps now, so I’ll probably run some tonight. Feel free to ping me if you see me online and would like to come along!

I’m going to shelf this league for a few weeks and then reroll as SSF with the same skeleton necro. It’s by far one of the best leagues for SSF lately imo, plus the new zana/atlas mechanics make it much much easier to unlock atlas.

Had this drop yesterday, near exalt worthy?

After stating that earlier this week, I’ve now had two Divine Vessels drop from low level maps. RNJesus comes through!

No idea, but in general what I do is post items high for a few days, then if they don’t sell start lowering the price until someone bites. Put it up for the exalt, later you can drop it 10-20 chaos if no one jumps on it.

I just finished a run through Grim Dawn and wanted to take a break from that game. Was thinking of playing PoE and thought it might be similar to Grim Dawn. After watching a few videos on Youtube my impression is that about all they have in common is that they are both ARPG’s! The more I watch on PoE the more confused I get. LOL

My thinking is that I should just play through the current league and not worry about all the details. Am I correct that after the league ends that my character gets transferred to the standard league where I can continue playing him, or start a new character in the next league? Thanks.

Yep! If you’re anything like me, you’ll likely do the latter. The new league is always more interesting, in my experience.

That’s a fine approach. My suggestion is to pick a guide off the POE forums that’s labeled “Budget” and/or “League Starter” and follow the leveling guide, which lets you learn how to play without concerning yourself with all the complexity of the passive tree, gem options, etc. Once you’ve played through the story once and have some experience with the game, you can make your own way through all that complicated stuff.

Thanks @ineffablebob. I watched a video by Esoro from a week ago where he recommended three Metamorph league starter builds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43tGLUKG30Q I liked the look of the Lacerate Gladiator and went with that for my first character. He indicated it would work on a budget, which is good because I’m broke. :)

One worry I have is that a main focus of the game seems to be to rush as fast as you can through maps, clearing everything as fast as possible. I tend to be more laid back and like to take my time and explore around in most games. Hopefully that won’t hurt me in the long run in PoE but we’ll see.

That’s the end-game focus for sure, but I think that’s true of most ARPGs. Once you’ve explored all the nooks and crannies of the story, the goal is to get the best pants, and you do that by killing the most things. But that doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with taking your time and enjoying that exploration part first!
