Did they ever change up the Trials or are they the same old PITA that caused me to quit this game in the first place?
You probably mean the labyrinth, and no, it’s not any better.
I assume you guys are talking about Hailrake in the Tidal Island. Completely optional quest, I never go in there until I’m level 7 or higher. Which I realize isn’t what a new player would expect, but it is what you’re going to see later on as you hit other difficulty spikes…and some of those aren’t optional. I’d rather they did it differently, too, but you do have to give credit for consistency.
That’s the one. I thought you needed to find the medicine chest as part of the main storyline and that it was in that area. I was level 2, or maybe 3 at most.
Eh…if you’re playing in softcore mode, dying is pretty inconsequential. The one thing PoE does right from the very start, is force you to pay attention to mechanics and boss moves. It’s entirely possible to time that boss so that you never get hit, and even if you do get hit you don’t generally get one shot which can’t be said for a lot of the later bosses lol.
PoE isn’t a particularly forgiving game, and it certainly can be frustrating. In general, standing in one spot for very long is never a great idea. The one build I would recommend if you want more of a face tanking sort of style, would be a spectral shield throw build. Once that gets going, you can facetank just about anything, and can literally ignore 90% of boss mechanics. A viper strike shadow/assassin is also another great build, because you just swoop in, hit stuff once, and swoop back out again, you spend very little time in contact with anything.
At any rate, if you’re not having fun, you’re not having fun. There is a certain brutality that exists with PoE that I actually like in a masochistic sort of way, but I certainly understand the frustration it generates.
Maybe I’ll give it another shot. Agree that the death toll isn’t terrible, although losing 10% XP several times in a short period of time is annoying. I was going to play an SST build just because, at age 70, my reflexes for dodging are not the greatest.
I thought at one time we had a guild but I don’t see a guild stash in the first town so maybe I’m misremembering that.
Yep. That’s it. Hated it.
I’m the outlier on QT3; I actually really like the Labyrinth. Or rather, once I grokked its mechanics I came to really like the Labyrinth.
I’m a big fan of push-your-luck mechanics, and Lab is just the right size for a nice session. Yes you have to be very attentive (traps, lol) and will occasionally gib because some stupid combination of things happens, but I’ve had some of my most memorable PoE experiences in Lab, especially with Izaro.
Now, like everything else in the game, they had to go overcomplicate it with a ton of ridiculous undocumented mechanics for players to later figure out and trivialize via guides and wikis, so that’s a bummer. But that’s GGG for ya.
We do have a guild, but you need an invite to see the stash. Most of us can invite if we see you online. Let us know your character name, and/or send me a tell at ineffablebob when you see me on.
OK, thanks. Current character is TridMunro. I was in the guild before but maybe got removed due to inactivity?
Yep. There’s a member limit that we’ve long since reached, so every once in a while I have to clear out folks that I haven’t seen online in a while. You’re back in now, invite sent!
I don’t believe you lose XP below a certain level so if you die early I don’t think it’s punitive in that way. And I realize dying in a soft core league it’s not a big deal but I still hate it!
I was going to respond to the guild comment ibut I see @ineffablebob took care of it.
Got my invite. Thanks!
And I am not seeing any loss of XP so far. I vaguely remember it kicking in around lvl 10 but that may be completely wrong.

IIRC, you lose 5% of a level’s XP when you die after completing Act 5, and then 10% lost after Act 10.
That sounds much better than what I remembered! :)
Too many games, too little time for me. I put everything I had in the guild stash tab #9. Some of it was borrowed guild gear. Some of it might be useful to lower level characters. Help yourselves. Maybe I’ll have more time when PoE2 comes out.
New league drops end of this week. I skipped the last couple, but will likely play some this time around. I have no idea what’s new, will probably just summon some zombies and see what happens.

Big buffs to self-cast spells and bow attacks (I’m talking 50% increases) and reworking of the entire atlas.
I’m in the same situation as you (not having played in a few leagues). I figure I will play thru the weekend (also summoning some sort of minions) until Lost Ark launches. Fun way to spend a weekend.
Self cast spells I can totally see, it’s always been pretty lackluster, but bows? I would guess stuff like exploding arrow is going to be pretty OP. I haven’t kept up with POE for a while, but it might be a fun time to jump back in.
Maybe they are just adjusting the power curve for bows and boosting them at early gem levels, since nbody seemed to be complaining that bows were underpowered, just not ideal league starters.
I’ve never got around to playing bows, so maybe the time is nigh!
