PC gaming: no more RPGs?

What the hell would be the point of moving big computer franchises like these exclusively to consoles? What’s the point of even resurrecting the Bard’s Tale and M&M and Wasteland names if you’re not going to return them to their gaming “home”? I can’t see too many Xboxers getting worked up about M&M X, for instance. Though I can see PC games being eager to play it…despite the near-atrocity that was M&M9.

Ever since 2003 was promised to be “The Beginning of a PC Gaming Golden Age” and failed to deliver, it’s been pretty much downhill with a few brights spots here and there for PC gaming, which is why I shifted focus to my GC.

That really worked well… :(

It directly ties in with the endtimes plot.

Upcoming RPGs - not much:

 • D.W. Bradley’s Dungeon Lords
 • Vampire tm Bloodlines
 • KOTOR 2
 • Dragon’s Age
 • Elder Scrolls 4
 • Gothic 3
 • Bard’s Tale (4)
 • unannounced game from Troika’s second team;

Let me add a few:

Divine Divinity 2
The Fall
The Witcher
Restricted Area (cyberpunk fans might rejoice if this title delivers)
Blades of Avernum (just released)
Dungeon Siege 2
The Roots
Kult: Heretic Kingdoms
Space Hack (sci-fi Diablo!!!)
COPS 2170: The Power of Law Media
Dungeon Delvers

I don’t know… by the looks of it, we do actually have quite a bit of stuff to look forward to.

Is there a Wasteland in the works?

There’s also the Sacred expansion.

Ok, so there’s RPG stuff coming up. Doesn’t explain the recent drought though…

What about strat?

It’s a bit of an oversimplification, but the cause of the current drought is mostly due to all the MMORPG’s that keep getting released. And hell, even they’re starting to appear more like single-player games.

BTW, don’t you have some sort of backlog of RPG’s to play? Or have you really just played 'em all?

Rome: Total War, Kohan: Kings of War.

Nope, I’ve literally played all the ones I’m interested in. I try not to waste time on the middling ones, though.

So what types of RPG’s are you interested in? Care to offer a sampling? There’s lots of good stuff out there. Pardon me for stereotyping, but if you’re one of those types that’s going to keep lamenting over Fallout and PS:T, you’re going to have to move on. I still think Ultima VII is, hands down, the best CRPG ever. And I don’t expect ever to see it surpassed. But I still have a lot of fun with modern RPG’s too.

Best guess: It’s (almost) summer, always a down time for the game market.

Good: Fallout 2, PS:T, BG series, MM series up until 8, Wizardry, anything by Vogel
Boring: IWD series, Arcanum
Too stupid to bother: Vampire anything
Didn’t interest me: Gothic
Won’t play due to shit quality: TOEE

Perhaps the fact that it’s freaking JUNE and that there’s always a drought of new games from the time the “didn’t make Christmas” stragglers make it out to the start of the Fall selling season? Hell, I remember the year we played Interstate 76 all summer long because it was the only great game to ship all spring and summer long…

You can’t get a post count like Jason’s by waiting until you have a legitimate complaint, you know. :-)

What RPGs have come out in the last year?

There’s been plenty of strategy games, but they just aren’t grabbing me.

Ah crap, my post got eaten.

n/m…

Admittedly the only V:tM game to come out this far was, IMHO, pretty weak for a variety of reasons. But the game itself and the setting are anything but stupid. Easy as it is to take potshots at LARPers or snicker at the Anne Ricean melodrama and angst that permeates the theme there’s actually quite a good bit of design and one hell of a roleplaying engine (if not the actual game system) in there. Politics, warfare (internal and external), and the dynamics of consequence and persona (humanity vs. The Beast as well as nature and demeanor as behavior affecting attributes). There really is the potential to encounter characters or sub-themes spanning the whole of human history. Have you ever read one of these books? Checked out the rich political even philosophical contexts? Looked at a bibliography? Admittedly some modules and supplements are far better than others but largely this is one of the most interesting settings ever to come out with only Mage, another WoD system, Nobilis or Amber: Diceless coming close.

I thought PCs game developers only had bumper crops every four years or so. I guess that means we’re stuck waiting until 2006?

Beyond Divinity and Sacred come to mind. Neither seems destined to be a classic, but they both have their good sides too.

BTW, have you played the original Divine Divinity? What about Hordes of the Underdark? I think you might like those. And don’t forget Blades of Avernum was just released!

Oh yeah, Spiderweb is working on Geneforge 3 as well as another title that they aren’t saying much about at this point in time. Wow, where will we find the time to play all these? :P
