PC running *too* fast problem

I’ve noticed some slightly strange behavior out of my system for a while now. Every now and then, it’ll run too fast, like I flipped an old-school “Turbo” button and everything is accelerated. The system clock is running about 2-3 times faster, the cursor is blinking twice as rapidly, Flash animations are just screaming by when they should be playing out slower, etc.

It’s usually fixed with a reboot or quick shutdown/reboot, but it is rather annoying. And it plays havoc with a game, like America’s Army. Everything is out of sync.

I’ve updated the BIOS, and scanned for viruses, and made sure I had the latest updates/patches for everything. Any ideas what’s causing something like this? Heat? A Windows bug?

Athlon XP 2100+
Leadtek Nforce2 board
512 MB (2x256) of OCZ 2700 DDR
GeForce4 Ti 4400

Uh-oh! Mother-board is about to die!

Last time I had this there was a dry joint near the north bridge causing the problem. Doubt that’s going to help you much though.

I thought I had problems.

At least my machine reboots itself.
