haha No problem regarding the smelling salts! I wouldn’t dream of taking away any of your market share. BTW, when are smelling salts used? Only in RvR?
Yeah, I have no desire to build ships, but I have been eyeing putting together either unrest packages or provisions (key ingredient for ship builders). Trying to determine whether my time’s better spent pirating (yarr!) or AHing (click buy tab, search on a product, etc…no yarring).
Smelling salts are also usable in about 95% of the melee missions in the game to come back from ‘the dead’ without having to start the mission over. Very handy if you get a bad pull of mobs and get knocked out. I will say that I’ve needed them a lot less since I got out of dirty fighting, but they are still handy and I still sell a great many in Turpitude (or I will again once we get it back from the Spanish).
The thing with unrest packs is that if you build them, you probably won’t sell them since I imagine people will expect you to use them yourself to ‘help the cause’. As such, I make small arms on the side with the profits I make from the salts.
Things like provisions, rum, hemp rope, and the like should always be in demand however. I know that whenever I see rum for sale, I’ll see about 400 or so for sale in the Bahamas at any one time, but I buy 100 of it at a time.
As a shipbuilder, albeit on a diferent server, I buy a lot of Iron ingots, Ship Provisions, and Copper ingots from Pirates. Iron is probably the hardest item for me to find at a reasonable markup.I’d imagine outfittings for ships are more in demand for Pirates since they use more ships.
Booo! I want to sail a 3 decker!
Last I read Pirates can jack SOLs but they’re automatically flagged for PvP as a Pirate in a purely military vessel would get every government worked up. But in theory, pirates could go around and take a bunch out and then save them up for a port battle. It’s not like you have to actually sail to them.
Hmm ok sounds like it could be cool.
Some pirates have jacked SOLs already on some servers, and I imagine it won’t be unheard of to see them in 4th rates. I doubt they’ll be able to take any of the better SOLs due to their rarity and how well defended they (hopefully) will be.
By ‘the dead,’ are you referring to when my health hits zero and I have to wait X seconds before re-entering the boarding battle? When would I actually hit the action button to use the smelling salts? (Can you tell I’ve never used one before?)
Smelling salts have two uses.
In Swashbuckling (avcom) missions, you can use them after you’ve died to come back from the point the scenario started but defeated opponents will remain defeated rather than you having to start over from scratch.
In Group Swashbuckling (avcom) missions and, especially, port battles you use smelling salts to bring back fallen player allies.
Smelling salts won’t help you in boarding actions. You can come back from ‘death’ by expending one wave of reinforcements on yourself rather than on bringing in more crewmen. I believe each wave used up does impact your overall crew left after a boarding action.
Crew “waves” lost during boarding definitely mean less crew when you return to sailing. I’m not sure what the formula is, but it seems pretty close to proportionate.
I’m in as Soapy Frog, level 5 pirate scum on Bonny. People still playing this game?
Trying to remember everything from beta, its all coming back slowly. Avatar combat still sets my teeth on edge… trying dirty fighting but I think it’s likely I’ll just avoid avatar-based missions, maybe stick to hunting on the open sea.
My Beta character was a naval officer, the Pirate naval skill tree is quite different I find. I’ll also have to figure out how to capture and use ships…
Trouble is, if you want to be a pirate (especially) you need to board and not sink ships, so you gotta get in there and buckle your swash or whatever. I find it much, much safer to run up and unload grapeshot or canister on targets and then board them than to duke it out at long range, but I’m sure you can do it the other way around too.
I have to say, I haven’t seen many Stand and Deliver folks actually in the game. One in passing, once. Could be ya’ll are superstealthed up or something.
Vanguardia’s growing. Several individuals over the last week and last night a smaller Society merged with us. We’re still not huge but we’re kinda picky and kinda okay with that. Several of us pitched in to generate contention in Belize.
TCON may be backing off Bonny. They don’t seem to think there’s enough PvP for them because the population is too low and they’re tired of doing all the work. They say this even as a bunch of smaller Societies tipped Belize so I’m taking that with a grain of salt. I do think they kicked tremendous ass but they pulled something in the process. Turned the game into work for themselves and seemed surprised when everyone else just treats it like a game.
I hope they stick around but Spain will manage with or without. Generally speaking they’re a good bunch but they just took themselves and the game far too seriously. When it stops being fun you don’t have to keep playing or keep on playing it as much and as feverishly as you have been.
Just got up to 9 myself. Not a part of the Society yet (sent a mail). Still havin’ fun.

I dunno, I have had ships surrender just from gunfire pretty frequently. Also boarding is pretty simple when you reduce your target’s crew to 1 before grappling… so at least I can minimize the avatar pain.
So the QT3 society is pretty dead? All the same an invite would be nice.
I would be willing to start a national character on a different server, if there are any societies that need members.
What are your characters’ names? I’ll send them invites.
Cliff Beefpile.
edit: nm I got an invite.
