Yeah, it starts to feel like an idle game where I leave it running and come back in a half hour or so, loot the dead chests lying around because of dehydration and check my upgrades.
I’m still playing this. I got the portal generator set up and have been wreck delving. Still just kind of waiting for the TI to tick over to each next upgrade. Some parts of the game are kind of clunky. Like it’s weird that you breed fish in your base aquarium and they just show up in the water. I get that it’s representing some kind of husbandry cycle, but lots of stuff in the game has that kind of symbolic feel: ladders are just teleporters to the next floor, rockets are just universal bonuses, etc. I like walking around my base and would love it if there was an internal staircase or elevator.
I still really like the game though. It’s exactly the kind of exploration-based crafting game that I wanted. I tried the Eden Crafters demo and it feels pretty unpolished compared to Planet Crafters, though it’s very clearly copying its style.
I really liked the game too, but it did feel like a bit of an idle game at some point, even when the gameplay loop was quite addictive. Once I got to breathable atmosphere, I kind of felt like I had accomplished my goal.
I was super confused by this when I didn’t see a link to the lakes. I didn’t think they’d populate it.
I just wish the animals wandered/populated.
I’m just starting the fish stage.
I love watching the planet change, but I wish the butterflies were persistent. I’m using the best larvae I can find to get more tons of insects faster, but as a result I’ve only got 3 or 4 varieties in the wild. I’d much rather have it be cumulative, so once you use a larva, there are always some present in the world. It just doesn’t seem “optimal” to have the lower tier butterflies in machines.
Does the butterfly display case work to add them to the world?
I don’t think it does, but you can build multiple butterly dome things.
Yeah, I know I can but then I’m filling them with suboptimal larvae and that’s just unnatural. Must min-max everything!
Also this - goes for the insects and fish - not sure about the animals, I didn’t get too far into that grind. You can go for variety, or number go up, but not really both. I am somewhat disappoint.
Looks like there will be paid DLC coming soon, with a new planet and new biomes.
They also just released the rover update, which includes two new biomes on the east side of the map
Oh that’s nice. This is enough of a game loop that I will happily pay for another planet to start afresh. I had played out the original planet during EA and finally release.
Same. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in this game. I’m on board with another planet to save!
My only concern is this:
Embark on an adventure taking place in a new world half the size of the base game planet .
Subnautica Below Zero was much smaller than the original game, and it suffered for it.
Hmmm…that is kind of concerning - and I wonder if the reason they are doing so is because their data shows most people don’t venture far. Because I was more focused on improving my o2 / heat / pressure than adventuring once the full release was out. Don’t get me wrong - I did go and visit all the new places, but there wasn’t a good reason to set up a base in the new areas.
I’ll drop in on their discourse & ask around.
I hope the DLC has more (or less) of a story than the base game.
I thought the occasional text logs you found were a missed opportunity for something more compelling. The gameplay in Planet Crafter was a lot of fun, but the story never really went anywhere. Maybe Subnautica and Breathedge just spoiled me, but I found their story beats did a much better job at both telling a story and gently guiding my exploration.
I am wondering if you missed the start of a fairly involved sort of quest chain. I don’t recall how it started, however, and don’t want to spoil anything.
I think I found three different quest chains, but none of them really seemed to matter. I guess one of the chains did lead to an alternate ending, so that’s something.
To me, the quests were just vignettes I stumbled across occasionally while I was doing something else, not a driving force to enter a new zone or push the limits of where I could venture. Except as a source of materials, they just seemed like a missed opportunity.
Ah. Yeah, I can understand that.
Man I love this game. I wish the new one was out already, though half the size of the original is wayyy too small.
