I had a huge performance boost after the patch. Also, maybe it’s just me, but it also looks better visually.

I have a gaming laptop with a 675M and with everything set to High (post-patch I upped shadows from med to high) and the PhysX Particles to Medium I went from 30 fps pre- to 50 fps post-patch. Much more enjoyable to play.

Yea, Today compared to launch it looks and runs much much better.
Really like the particle-thingy from explosions.

I said I took a break from Planetside 2 to play games that I paid for. Other games.

Ah, that makes sense. Probably a second language thing that I misread that!

It happens! I also often do a poor job of making my points clear because I awkwardly word my sentences when I write.

Some people have mentioned that the game looks better now in addition to the frame rate improvements. I’m just curious, if this has been your experience for the game, when was the last time you played the game? I played for a couple hours last weekend when I got a new monitor and noticed the game looked better (better textures, mainly) than the last time I played it, but I had also taken a couple months off from the game so I wasn’t sure if I was just seeing things or not.

I’ve played actively for the last couple of months and thought immediately after the patch it looked before than just before. I think in the patch notes there was mention of various graphics optimizations as well, so it’s possible. Graphics and particularly UI have come a long way even in the last 6 months.

Right well, I got back on to test out the new updates and a few hours later I’m pretty sure I won’t be playing anything else anytime soon, even the games I’ve actually bought. This game just sucks me in. For me it has become my video game comfort food. I think I go to it when I’m wanting to play something, just wanting to be able to jump in and go, and not wanting to have to learn anything new.

But on a serious note, I couldn’t find the PhysX option anymore. Did they drop it? Or am I just being a bad looker?

Is there a high level summary somewhere of what’s changed since release?

I couldn’t find it either. Maybe we’re both blind?

I actually bought a new laptop with this game in mind, but I still haven’t gotten around to actually downloading and playing it. (For a variety of reasons–I’ve been a bit turned off by the F2P, I was worried about lag and CPU/GPU performance, and I really just haven’t had time to dive into a new, massive FPS where I have to learn the names for a bunch of bases and stuff…)

All that ambivalence aside, I’ve been seeing little updates and I’ve read that they’ve changed the base-to-base node/network mechanics and they’re maybe changing (or thinking about changing?) some of the base capture mechanics. Those snippets have made me wonder:

  1. Are these new changes being well received by the community? (It sounded like they were changing things to reduce ‘back hacks’, just like PS1).
  2. Are these changes a bad sign or a good sign? (i.e., Are they condensing things because the server population is already wavering/dwindling?)

I’ve liked the changes. I personally was a fan of back hacks, I guess. Is that when you capture bases behind enemy lines? Anyway, the changes help keep the front lines moving and pretty clear, as opposed to before when you’d sometimes be wondering where the best place was for action on a map. It just makes it a little easier to hop in and out of action. I haven’t noticed any dwindling population on the server I play on, but I can’t speak for the others.

I found the option to change the GPU particle quality, but it was greyed out. Don’t know why that would be, unless they’ve just generally disabled it for now in order to work on improving its performance, which I won’t mind.

I’m still playing this semi-regularly, since I run with a small group of real-life friends who play on Wednesday nights.

The optimization patch has greatly improved my framerate, which is to say, I’m now constrained by GPU instead of CPU. (Alt-F to enable the frame rate display.)

I haven’t yet seen a large battle (100+ players) post-patch to check for improved performance there.

I heard that you can still enable PhysX by editing the .ini files, but that the in-game checkbox was removed. Apparently, the PhysX stuff wasn’t included in the optimization pass, and it will greatly reduce framerates if enabled.

Did this always have a tutorial mode? I logged in for the first time in over a year (after signing up but not playing since it was too daunting) and I find there’s a tutorial mode now after deleting and starting over.

Nope - its new. Loads and loads of new stuff to try out. Honestly, this is probably the finest example of a F2P game I’ve ever seen.

Why are the player textures so muddy though?

I’ve never noticed muddy character textures. I mean it isn’t Crysis, but it looks fine for an MMO.

Not so much muddy for me as a purple haze over everything.

I’ve always wondered this…player textures are pure garbage.

could you guys post screen shots?

Have they adjusted weapon costs or cert point gain at all after launch? I mostly stopped playing because getting new weapons was such a huge grind.
