Dear murbella, we’re in violent agreement (well, my agreement is less violent, but you get the idea). I’m poking fun at one of Higby’s early comments about the f2p players providing content for the premium players, except that the distinction is silly because the premium-only content is really just limited to cosmetic things like camo and skull helmets. It’s funny because the people who purchase premium content somehow expect to be better at the game, except that they die just the same when I knife them in the back while they’re obliviously trying to figure out why they can’t pull a vehicle from the terminal I just hacked. Gee, the joke isn’t as funny now that I’ve had to explain it.
The zerging/exp comment is a bit of a rant about the mismatch between fun gameplay interactions and the exp/cert reward system. Sure, zerging is the best way to get exp/certs. How do you think I got to my current BR in the first place? By playing engineer/medic for the zerg (duh!). I’m just annoyed that the in-game reward system basically reinforces that sort of gameplay because of the obsession with exp/certs.
Well, sorry then i guess i didn’t read the sarcasm correctly.
It is somewhat a pet peeve of mine with people complaining about planetside 2’s freeness when there are other games like allods online (have not played this in years, cannot confirm or deny it is still like this!) that are so godawful and evil at making you pay.
I personally like the zerg vs zerg. To me, the main strength of planetside 1/2 over a conventional fps is the massive scale. While i like the gameplay and progression (rpg fan) in planetside, if the level of scale was the same as in a normal fps, i’d probably just stick to the normal one. I like feeling like i’m in an absolute war zone. As much as i (infamously) dislike some aspects of air, i like air flying over head as i hide in the hills. I love how impressive a huge night battle is with tracers everywhere and explosions lighting up the night. It is really hard for me to take small scale, road based shooters seriously personally.
I also don’t mind the engineer/medic thing so much. My favorite class is engineer and i play it because i enjoy it, not because it can be an experience machine. If you’re a good shooter, you can make just as much exp killing people as repairing stuff and indeed i do this most of the time, because i tend to like being in the thick of things (but that doesnt mean i won’t repair people near me), and not so much because i’m a shooting god (sadly i’m not).
Just wish units would render at a larger distance…
In the beginning I was enamored of Light Assault, and I still enjoy it a lot, but lately on VS I’ve been going Heavy Assault. I really am getting to like the LSW, though I’m eying an Ursa for longer range support. As long as I can remember to hit F and use my ShinyShield™ in time. I like Engies too, though there are usually so many of them and Medics and not enough assault types, so I often eschew those classes.
If you get a heavy damage LMG you can do a surprising amount of long range work with the first shot. If you can see it, you can hit it.
The LSW works well for that, though it’s more of a spray ‘n’ pray suppressor I think. I get a fair number of kills though. The Orion doesn’t have enough ammo capacity for my tastes. The Flare seems nice in terms of damage but I think the Ursa, with it’s better range and accuracy, might fit my style. I can use an SMG or Pandora for close in work. But yeah, if you play a HA as support more than lead in and charge all the time, it works pretty well.
I do have to get a Devastator I think. The Annihilator simply takes way too long to lock on, and lacking any dumb fire it’s a death trap to use in fast-paced fighting.

The Ursa is my favorite gun by far. It’s not very good in close quarters but for mid to long range, it’s a killer.
The only thing holding me back is the certain knowledge that if I buy spacebucks today, tomorrow they’ll be three for one…

I hope SOE sells more vehicle weapons that are not just secondary defensive weapons.
I am much more a vehicle pilot than a infantry peasant. My place is to live inside a vehicle, murder lots of men, and have this box of metal last hours without getting destroyed. Maybe I am a coward, or a opportunist, you can call me these things, but I am good at it. At infantry… not soo much.
I am not feeling my place in the game exist just now. Air vehicles have a very harsh existence, and are fun for only a very sort ride. Tanks and similar, are not as fun has can be… except maybe the sunder, but is a weird place to be. What type of game have has is most fun vehicle, a armored personal carrier?.. not, thats not really it. The liberator can be really hilarious with a good gunner, but these are rare.

The Annihilator shines in outfit tactics, but isn’t very useful as a solo. I never really worked with the Devastator, but my desire for a dumbfire mode on the Annihilator is pretty rare.

The game favour Numbers over Quality, and Outfits can choose a weapon that is normally suboptimal, like the annhilator, or the lasher, and make it a force of nature. Annhilator Swarms (groups of 4 or 5 annhilators with 2 engineer, and 1 medic) can destroy absolutelly everything*. Groups of 4 or 5 heavy vanu witht he lasher can turn a Amp Station in a “Fireworks Accident In a Disco Party in the 70’s*”
- thats the point of the annihilator.
** also described often as “sperm river in space”.
The only balance here is that you need to coordinate a group of players to do the same thing. A coordinated group of mens, doing anything else could be equally effective, maybe less impressive.
EDIT:
pretty cool video
…because, as you imply, you’re always with a group. A group of Annihilators is deadly. On your own, or in a loosely coordinated squad, you need the flexibility to switch modes, and so either a Devastator or perhaps one of the specific AA/AV missiles, which also have dumbfire I think, will be best. I got the Anni because I wanted to be able to fight back against aircraft, and tanks, more reliably, but its damage is very low. For air, it’s not bad, as you get partial points, but it sucks for tanks.
So the servers merged. I finally have a VS on Mattherson. If any of you guys see a player named “Shartly” running around, thats me. I’m not proud. It was a throw away name I tossed up quick just so I could get a VS character to play around with. Anyway… games.
The influx of players has upped the intensity, to be sure, but the servers…they don’t seem quite up to the challenge. Lag, engine crashes, rendering issues, everything that you would think might accompany this merge seems to be happening, at least so far.
Am I the only one who thinks the new SMGs are a bit OP? The only thing I have to back this up is that ever since they’ve come out, half my deaths (that weren’t inflicted by my own side) have been due to SMG.
Well, they’re new, therefore FOTM, so you’ll be getting a lot of people using them. I like the first VS SMG, the only one I’ve used; with soft-nose bullets and an extended mag, it’s a very good close in gun. It’s pretty useless at range though. I think that tons of people are using SMGs right now, more than that they are too powerful. But time will tell.
I do kinda wish you could equip an SMG instead of a pistol…but I guess that’d be way too OP.
FOTM makes sense, but (and maybe I’m just horrible at FPS) I’m losing duels at distance between my carbine and my enemy’s SMG. I was under the impression carbines were supposed to be more accurate/powerful at range than SMGs. Maybe carbines are just the worst weapon in the game now.
Really? The Smgs seem pretty inaccurate at long range to me, but mine is barely upgraded (the close range bullets and basic sight) so who knows. My engineer likes it for close range fighting.

SMGs can be deadly at medium range once you throw an Advanced Laser Sight on there, particularly if you have good trigger discipline.
Carbines still work just fine, especially when upgraded. Don’t forget to aim for the head.
