PlanetSide outfit?

At least three of us Qt3’ers (me, Ben Sones, and my brother Greg) have been playing the PlanetSide beta pretty regularly. It ended tonight, but the game goes live in a couple of days. Are people here going to be playing? Interested in forming a Qt3 outfit?

We’ve been playing on Emerald as New Conglomerate characters, and my plan is to stick with that unless folks here are going to be doing something else.

I would be playing if it wasn’t for the $13/month. I’d pay $8 or less. There’s no justification for $13 given what’s in the game. There’s no typical level of MMOG content to interacti with. It’s basically just Tribes with a small amount of persistence.

I might still buy the full game and play for the included month, but I will probably give the game some time to work out the opening day fuckups and get a couple of patches under its belt before I spring for it.

Besides, if what I suspect about people’s reaction to the fee is correct, either the box or the monthly fee (or both) will be reduced in a couple of months :)

I wholeheartedly agree, UC. I can’t imagine that it actually costs them so much to run the game that they need to charge $13 a month to make a reasonable profit. They’re probably doing it so as not to undercut their other games, and because they think people will pay it. I think it’s a big misstep, though–people are grousing about having to pay to play a shooter at all, and now Sony trots out this massive fee.

I’m doing basically the same thing you are. I know the game will be fun for the first month. After that, I’ll see where the fee is, and whether I think it’s worth paying it.

I’ll gladly pay $13 for

  • fast and stable servers
  • someone to bitch at when the servers aren’t fast and stable (not that they listen but I feel better about it)
  • minimal cheating and banning of those that get caught (the kiddies only have so many credit cards…)
  • new content added periodically
  • a lot fewer TK’ing idiots, spammers, trolls, etc. than your typical FREE online FPS
  • and the fact that I don’t have to use a GAMESPY browser to find a good server and/or my buddies!! (well, I use ASE anyway but ASE takes a while to support a game)

Anyway, I’m preordered and in a fantastic outfit of good, mature people that use Teamspeak and teamwork. Interested? Email me at [email protected] and I’ll send you our website address.

They’re planning on adding new content on a continuous basis. I talked to Dave Georgeson and they have an 18 month plan for new content. They want to add stuff like underwater battles, etc.

They need to get more public about it, then. I mean, I know that they announced the first new content update, but they haven’t said anything publically about regular updates, and people are clamoring for something to justify the monthly fee.

Personally, I’m enjoying the game more than any recent MMORPG that I’ve played. I’ll play it at least for the free month. If I’m still enjoying it this much by then, I’ll keep playing. If it runs out of steam for me, well, then it won’t be different than any of the MMORPGs out there.

It’s hard to make promises about MMOGs. The players scream if you don’t keep them. If SOE says, “We’d like to implement underwater battles at some point” that becomes a promise in the minds of the players and they will never, ever forget it. If SOE doesn’t do it, then “SOE lied to us” becomes the cry of the day.

or god forbid they try to do underwater battles in an expansion later. Then it becomes a cry of sony raping them for more money for what they initially ‘promised’ for free.

Rywill and Union Carbide…

Cry me a fuckin river. Really what is $13 a month nowadays? I bet that you guys easily spend $13 a month stuffing your fat guts with hoho’s. As guildboss has stated for $13 a month your getting:

  • fast and stable servers
  • someone to bitch at when the servers aren’t fast and stable (not that they listen but I feel better about it)
  • minimal cheating and banning of those that get caught (the kiddies only have so many credit cards…)
  • new content added periodically
  • a lot fewer TK’ing idiots, spammers, trolls, etc. than your typical FREE online FPS
  • and the fact that I don’t have to use a GAMESPY browser to find a good server and/or my buddies!! (well, I use ASE anyway but ASE takes a while to support a game)

Man, good point–$13 a month is nothing. Send me your credit card info and I’ll get myself an account.

Ha ha – nice comeback, Rywill.

Yeah, I think they have a tough sell when BF1942 is free. Planetside does offer more, but free is free.

Jesus Rywill, lay off the fucking Hohos for christ sakes. All Benj is saying is that you eat a lot of hoho’s and then he quoted the other guy. SHEEEEEYIT!!!

Plus the $50 for the box & first month. Assuming I play for three months, which is long for most shooters, then I’m looking at $76. That’s about double what I would pay for a non-subscription FPS. Is Planetside worth two other games? Not to me. Meanwhile, free games like Day of Defeat (discounting my copy of Half-life purchased in 1998) and Wolfenstein Enemy Territory are competing for my gaming time. Since I do have a budget for games, an ongoing or higher cost is going to require a truly great game.

I still think PS does not offer enough when compared to competing games, but that is based on my playing style. I was playing Planetside last night after playing a lot of Day of Defeat the last couple weeks, and the lack of locational damage is really a huge negative for me. I generally play multiplayer games as a close combat assault guy, or as a sniper. Both need headshots to make them effective, so I’m stuck at a lower level of performance than I expect for myself, which makes for an unsatisfying game. Even as my preferred PS anti-vehicle guy, it doesn’t matter where I shoot, so it seems like I have to pound on enemy vehicles forever to kill one. At least in BF1942 I can kill a tank in one shot if I can hit the rear armor. Without having to worry about armor facing, the tankers’ job is far simpler, and I think makes a less compelling game experience for everyone.

Yah, I’m definitely up for starting a QT3 outfit. I definitely want to find some folks that are up for some more serious squad tactics.

Personally I don’t mind paying $13 a month, and I guess now it’s really only $7 if you’re already paying for EQ (since they do the combo thing for $20).

I played the beta a bit, and was well addicted. A steady trickle of new items + reliable servers more than justifies the monthly charge, IMO. And if you don’t like it, well, don’t pay. That’s the only way the market will stabilize. EQ had enough subscribers for constant expansion at $10, so they upped the price.

Personally, I don’t think they’ll have to. I haven’t heard as much buzz around an online game since, well, BF1942.

ALright, let me download the game. Wait, I can’t? I have to spend 80 bucks on it THEN I continue paying for it?

$13/month is nothing. I can afford it. I already pay that much for my DAoC subscription, and I’m about to drop my AC1 subscription, which is an additional $10/month which would almost cover the cost of Planetside. That’s not the issue.

The issue is that I don’t think it’s WORTH $13/month. Therefore I won’t be paying the monthly fee.

For those of you interested in putting together a Qt3 Outfit:

We all need to choose a server to play on. My vote would be Emerald, if only because that’s the server I’ve been playing on in the beta. I wouldn’t object to any server, really, but we do need to choose one. We’ll also need to choose a time to meet online to get the Outfit started–we need ten players in a squad in order to form a new Outfit. Any time this weekend would be good for me.

Thoughts?

I’m up for any server, so let’s play on Emerald unless somebody objects. The bigger decision, IMO, is what empire are we going to play? I’ve played mostly NC and like them. I tried the Vanu for a bit and found them not as fun, but I only played like 35 minutes so I could be totally wrong.

My vote is for NC just because I’m used to it. Also, their basic infantry weapon (gauss rifle) is pretty damn good.

And I could be on this weekend, but not Saturday morning.

I’m up for it as well. I"ll be picking my copy up tomorrow.

I tried all of the empires in beta, and I also prefer the NC. They get the Phoenix missile, and they don’t have to wear dorky goggles like the Terrans.
