Seems like the right thing to do, since this game was getting lost in the shuffle, and a lot of people were balking at paying full price for a multi-player focused game.

More hardware impressions:

I’ve still yet to see any good reason why it’s better to have the sound coming out of the controller than my speakers. The only game I play that really uses it on the PS4 is MLB The Show and it’s annoying as fuck.

Also, none of these previews seem to touch on the most important thing about the controller. How long does the battery actually last?

Shadows over Mordor had a spooky voice through the controller, adding a lot of atmosphere. Haven’t really seen it anywhere else, though.

Killzone 4 played the voice diaries through the controller. I didn’t like it though, I couldn’t hear them very well unless I turned the volume all the way up.

Also, how cheeto-powder repellant is that white plastic? Tests must be performed!

Well accidentally deleted my post…
Here it is again

Even Jeff Gerstmann, who is often accused of being jaded, seems super impressed

I prefer the PS controllers myself. I really like the big flat button/pad as i don’t have to think about mashing it, and asymmetric controllers are weird imo. I even liked the speaker in the controller. The 3d axis thing otoh is useless.

The speaker and the games that use it are my least favorite PS4 feature. So incredibly annoying.

There’s a lot more going on with the new controller than just carrying over the PS4 speaker folks.

Sony shipped my Media Remote today. Best Buy will have my Pulse 3D headset on Friday in store for pickup. If you ordered or are looking for accessories, now is the time to start looking.

I think the PS3 to PS4 transition of their controllers has got to be the biggest improvement on controllers ever over a generation. I’m just happy Sony is (probably) keeping the way the joysticks feel and the way the triggers feel, and even improving the triggers.

I was sad to see last generation that other than racing games, no one really used the extra feedback on the triggers for the Xbox. But now that Sony has haptic feedback and extra sensitivity on the triggers, I’m hoping a lot more games use that this generation. Though I don’t know how well the two things correspond to one another. Can a Ubisoft developer that uses the haptic feedback on Dual Sense program something similar for the trigger vibrations on the Xbox? Or does it not translate well?

We shall see.

Just asking, but why is now the time to start looking for the accessories? I had an email from Best Buy yesterday that said that the controller would be available starting October 30 and I’m thinking that it doesn’t make much sense if I can’t get a PS5 to go with it. I could have pre-ordered a controller and media remote and charger but didn’t bother because I couldn’t get the PS5 pre-ordered.

Are people expecting a real shortage of everything or is this just worry-hype?

If you already have a pre-order for the system, then I wouldn’t wait around for accessories. If you don’t, then sure, don’t get anything. I figured that was understood. I guess not?

Yeah, I read it in context of that Best Buy email; getting the controller two weeks before the system’s even available seemed a bit odd. Just curious if some of that is because of expected shortage or is the hype just generating the buy-now spree.

System launches are always hot selling times. Unless they are stuffing the channel with accessories, some things are going to be hard to find. The controller, as @forgeforsaken is showing via links, is pretty unique. The headset may also be pretty unique as the 3D sound was a big talking point for the system design.

It’s not like it’s a year before it ships. We’re two weeks away from PlayStation 5.

So the haptic feedback stuff is neat, but I haven’t seen anyone address how it’s better than what’s in the switch controllers nor why they think it will actually be adopted (game devs have completely neglected it for the switch).
