I posted that vid in the AC thread earlier.
It seems the case across multiple multi-platform games. Giantbomb seemed to feel Watchdogs and No Man’s Sky next gen version ran smoother on PS5 as well, Dirt I believe was more stable too.
It’s still early though and most of these games are crossgen conversions as opposed to designed from the ground up for Next Gen so that may change but so far that supposed big perf difference from X having an extra 3 teraflops hasn’t manifested and in fact it’s lagging not surpassing the PS5.
Man, just had my PS5 crash and turn itself off in the middle of a game. My extended USB SSD became corrupted and doesn’t appear recoverable. Everything is fine now that it’s disconnected, I’ll just need to re-download a few games. I’ve heard of others having this problem so for now I’ll leave it disconnected until Sony gets it sorted out.
I did have the SSD connected via the USB-A port in the back of the console. I hear connecting it to USB-C in the front might be the fix, but for now I’m not taking any chances.
Did you get the system update before this crash?

Wasn’t there some sort of indication that the toolchain is mostly the same as PS4, so it’s been easier for developers to start working with PS5?
I can’t remember if I read that here or on reddit. No idea if it’s even true, but it seems like a plausible reason why performance would be better despite lower raw processing power.
Yeah my console had the system update that I believe was released yesterday.
Yeah, I had tons of issues with the rear ports for my external storage. Not a peep since switching to the front USB-C port. Definitely try that.
Yeah, Digital Foundry hasn’t done it yet, but the data out there for Call of Duty Black Ops Cold war also shows PS5 with an advantage. At this point just about everything is between dead even, or having a slight to moderate advantage on PS5. People are blaming the immaturity of Microsoft’s development tools, but since March we have had reason to believe Xbox Series X would not have a clear performance advantage.
PS5 has efficiency advantages from the faster, more narrow GPU and architectural advantages from it’s cache scrubbers. It also seems to have more capable sound and I/O hardware which may result in a greater CPU burden for those tasks on Xbox games. PS5 also has uniform memory bandwidth across the entire 16GBs, instead of the split Xbox developers have to work around.
I’ve been saying for a while people were being premature when they assumed Xbox Series X would have a pretty uniform resolution or framerate advantage. I’ve been thinking the actual performance would likely be a wash. Seeing clear performance advantages in so many PS5 versions is a surprise, though.

Since performance is so similar, that means no one on the Internet has to fight about it.

It’s very clear that the XSX has a small GPU advantage, but it is small and other factors can certainly overcome that.
The Xbox has a small “teraflop” advantage. There are other performance metrics in which PS5 has the advantage. Things like fill rate, geometry rate, etc. And that’s ignoring each having unique architectural enhancements which can change performance a lot.
I think that kind of talk after 2 cross gen games is a bit premature. By all accounts though, the Sony dev tools are excellent and have allowed the devs to really hit the ground running. Which is a good sign for games to come even early on in the lifecycle.
But give it a year or 2, and the power differential might show more. Because, while the systems are generally similar, the One X still has the power advantage. Another thing that plays in favour of Sony (if you consider that having to support 2 configs is a huge hassle when devs cater to a much wider range on PC) is that both PS5 sku’s are effectively the same machine.
But if you want to predict now that the PS5 will have the advantage or there will be no performance difference between the consoles, I’ll happily predict the opposite and revisit with you in a year or 2 when we are past cross gen.
Edit: And I should point out it’s a good things if both systems are generally close and even if the best version seesaws between them. Because they both seem poised to deliver an excellent experience. So I can’t get excited about the my console is better than yours kind of argument. I simply think the numbers will align with the specs sooner or later. But it won’t make a huge difference either way.

Overall, based on the specs, the XSX has a better GPU. But like I said, it’s a small difference, nothing like the launch Xbone vs PS4.
My guess is the XSX stupid segmented RAM is to blame. But just a guess.
It’s not just two games. It’s basically every multiplatform game that has been tested:
Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla
Watch Dogs: Legions
Call of Duty: BO: Cold War
Dirt 5
Devil May Cry 5
No Man’s Sky

For people with a lot of games on PS4, how do you get them and the saves to the PS5?
There is a transfer tool in the PS5 system settings that let you copy it all over your network. You could also just move all your games onto an external hard drive on the PS4 and plug that into the PS5. Works pretty much right away. For saves you can additionally export them to USB on PS4 and then import them on PS5, or if you have PS Plus, upload them to the cloud to sync them on PS5.
Transfer tool is probably the simplest way, assuming your PS4 hard drive isn’t too full. But you can choose which saves and games to copy. The actual transfer process can take a long time, but it will happen in the background like a download so you can play games while it happens.

Wow, they covered their bases well. So nice!
@Gordon_Bleu let us know how your PS5 works over the next couple of days. I can’t believe it corrupted your entire SSD. That’s awful.
Supposedly in stock again!

stock was sold out for the day like 10 minutes into this. Bah!
Ohhh anywhere local? I’ve been thinking I’d get the GF an Xbox for Christmas if possible.

Hah, 10 minutes?! Amateurs.

Use LAN. I guess my hub was unplugged at some point, and I didn’t notice. Took like 24 hours to do the transfer whereas a LAN would have been a few hours. It still worked though which is great.
