PS5 was a pre order from Target
Xbox got from Costco that had some stock on launch day

If you only have a few games you’re currently playing you can just download them directly on the PS5 from My Library. I noticed that the PS5 was MUCH faster downloading than my PS4.
For game saves, if you have PS+, you can also just download those directly from your PS cloud to the PS5. All of my game saves took about 7 minutes total to download that way.

So conflicted about whether to ask (beg) my wife to get me a PS5 or an XBox for Christmas. I’ve been a Sony guy for the last two generations, but I worry about being locked out of the next RPG from Bethesda or Obsidian. Or the next Dishonored-type from Arkane.

Wouldn’t that be on the Microsoft Game thing on PC?
They’ve made it pretty clear that you won’t get “locked out” of the next Bethesda game. You just might get an inferior version of that Bethesda game. It might be exclusive to PC/Xbox for a bit, it might have some special DLC or maybe only the xbox version will run at 4K 120hz.
Obviously, with all that said, there is nothing stopping them from changing there mind and not release ES6 for PS5 in 3 years.

I mentioned this in the video card thread but thought I’d post it for you all too.
The only good thing to come out of COVID for me was I’m able to get a new video card and PS5. There is a new FHA program (for those that had to buy under one), that if you took the covid hardship deferrals on your mortgage, you’d be able to refinance your house at a lower interest rate for free. So I had to skip making 2 mortgage payments, and today is my signing which will change my interest rate from 4% to 3%. I’ll still end up paying off my mortgage at the same time as before and I’ll be paying $75 less per month.
If you hadn’t considered this kind of thing, look into for your own mortgage.
edit
This goes for more than just FHA. VA, USDA, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac as well.
It seems like it’s too early to be concerned about this. The next “Dishonored-type” game is Deathloop and that’s PlayStation exclusive for awhile and coming soon. Anything after that has only been announced so we have no idea what will happen with any of those games. Microsoft also has said they’re not sure how they’ll handle exclusivities on those games.
If you’re only on consoles (because PC will get those games regardless) then PS5 now and saving for an Xbox in a few years if it’s required is probably the best move. Sony has actual exclusives and if you’re in the ecosystem already, you are going to love the improvements to PS4 games that have them. I’ve been having a blast with CoD Warzone on PS5 because the frame rate is now locked at 60 and the HD Texture Pack makes it look better than it did on my PC thanks to HDR support on PS5.
I’d recommend Xbox now, PS5 later. Right now the going is good for getting Game Pass Ultimate setup fairly cheaply for 3 years. Just buy any discounted Xbox Live yearly codes and then convert that 3 year time period to an Ultimate membership for $1. And you’ll be set for a lot of great games for the next 3 years.
Meanwhile, Sony, I love them for it, but their big tentpole franchise games tend to be big single player adventures, and they come down in price, and there’s no hurry to play them now. In the PS4 era, I got most of the big Sony exclusives eventually for $10-20 range each, and I’ve played 15 of them, and own about 15 more that I plan to get to. I’d say you can do something similar for PS5 later in the generation.
If you go for PS5 now, the games are more expensive than they will be 3 years from now, and again, big single player adventures, there’s no urgency to play them now.

You got a source for this?

MS said something about games being “first and best on Xbox”, which was all pretty vague but did seem to imply they would come to other platforms at some point, perhaps a year later, or without features, or something.

???
This seems like a weird direction for them. And am I reading it right, it’s mostly multiplayer? Gah.

Unfortunately Prey didn’t sell very well and Dishonored trailed off in the market too. Some of the best games of the past 10 years.
It’s unclear how the singleplayer in Deathloop actually works. Note it will be out on Windows day one also.

I know, they were amazing. I felt like they didn’t get the advertising and exposure they should have, and that hurt them a lot. I never saw any ads on-line for them and I’m their target market. However I saw craploads of DOOM ads and I’m not it’s demographic at all.

Yeah, they said they would take it on a case by case basis… but let’s be real here. Microsoft bought Bethesda for the exclusive titles. That was the reason for the purchase. That stuff ain’t coming to the PS5. Maybe the Switch, because the Switch isn’t a direct competitor… but I think folks are lying to themselves if they think they’re gonna get elder scrolls games on the PS5…ever.

I think you missed the more recent insight and are quoting from the initial post-purchase one.

If you have a PC for gamepass that can play the latest and greatest then the PS5 was the obvious choice for me. I really soured on the last xbox though, I booted it up once and then never turned it on again since not a single game came out for it that I cared about that didn’t also come out on my PC.
This is a pretty good point, and one of the driving reasons I bought the PS5. I have a pretty good chunk of PS4 games I never played because the Pro never impressed me and load times are slow so I waited for sales and picked up the games on a deep discount. Now I have the PS5 which has great backwards compatibility and am looking forward to going through those old titles. Haven’t even bought Ghosts of Tsushima and Last of Us 2 yet, looking forward to playing those on PS5 as well.
I know @Rock8man doesn’t care about load times but I am the opposite - I very much do. Plus I don’t usually play more than one game at a time, so one of the big tent pole features of the xbox would be of only middling use to me. Since PS5 has fast resume for a single title I have been very happy with it so far.
I may pick up an X later if certain gamepass titles only show on the console, but for now that hasn’t been an issue. If you don’t have a great gaming PC? That choice gets a lot harder, especially with gamepass in the equation.
If you didn’t read the Ars article, you should. They paid a lot of money for Bethesda, similar to Minecraft, and I think the return on investment only comes if the games stay multiplatform, even if that incorporates delays on those other platforms to a later release date to make it stand out on PC/Xbox. It’s too much money left on the table for them.
There are no guarantees, but for now there are also no games in this situation. Both Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo have specific contracts that are being honored and the Elder Scrolls and Starfield stuff are vapor atm.

Ya, I think you’re reading a bit too much into PR babble… because that’s all that is.
But hey, prove me wrong, kids!
If this were true, then why wouldn’t Sony release all of ITS games on other platforms? Why are they “leaving all that money on the table?” They got WAY less money than Microsoft.
Like I said, I’m happy to be proven wrong on this, especially if Sony further lets down their guard on things like cross platform play.

Yeah, I take it as seriously as when any small company is bought by a giant corporation and they release a note about how the small company will still operate independently and nothing is changing. And then a couple months later they change everything.
