Inoffensively hidden… uh huh.

Point is it doesn’t particularly matter to me and wouldn’t stop me from buying a PS5 if I wanted it. But that said, I find it really unattractive.

I just think it’s kind of funny that you say you find it inoffensive but the thing would never see the light of day in your house.

I said the XS X and S were inoffensive. The PS5 is horrid.

Yeah, i don’t get the folks taking about fingerprints and crap on the consoles.

It’s a box that plays video games. It doesn’t really matter what it looks like.

They do? All my Synology gear is black.

Yep. It’s an aesthetic that pleases more than a few people. I don’t care. I buy for specs and reliability and ease of use, not typically what color the plastic is.

I gotta say I’m pleasently surprised at how clean this white controller is staying, even with my kids using it. I’m also happy with the battery life. It’s no switch pro controller but it’s massively improved from the ps4.

Another thing I’m happy with is the multiple accounts and parental restrictions. Somehow sony does this better than nintendo. We had a brief problem with our 10 year old setting his alarm for 530am to get some extra gaming in (hard to get too mad at him, at least he was showing initiative) but the PlayStation let’s you set which hours they can log in.

It would be nice if this actually worked properly for me. My account is fine, and I was able to register one child account that works just fine. But when I registered the second child account and then logged into it for the first time, I got a message that it had been permanently suspended due to violations of the PSN terms of service. Customer support told me that it would have to be escalated to a specialist, and they would be contacting me in 24-48 hours… about 10 days ago. I even tried registering yet another account using a spare email address, but the verification email never showed up. Going to try again in a bit, after hopefully they get some fixes in from whatever went wrong with launch.

And the system software definitely could have used some more time in the oven in general. I’ve had:

  • phantom “could not sync your saved data” messages, that prompt me to pick from a local and cloud version of an identically timestamped save.
  • system crashes when resuming from rest mode, sometimes with dire warnings about not disconnecting power and needing to rebuild the database.
  • game crashes or games running extremely slowly for no apparent reason until I restarted the system.
  • no audio from the system after turning it on until I manually toggle between TV and home theater sound.

And some baffling UI irritations:

  • The system insists on using my real name rather than my online handle. The one working child account doesn’t have this issue for some reason, maybe because I have PS+?
  • My Game Library appears to be permanently cluttered with demos and trials of PS4 games that I checked out ages ago, that aren’t even playable on the system.
  • I spent several minutes looking through the PS store trying to find a way to browse their Black Friday sale. Not only was there no central landing page for it, there was not even a way to browse titles currently on sale. They later added a way to browse the current sale from the Explore menu (not from the store itself).

All those irritations aside, though, I’m enjoying the system a lot.

Holy smokes this actually happened to me too! I ended having to create a new Gmail account just for this kid’s ps account.

I always use 1password to generate passwords, this time the randomly generated pw had the word ‘coon’ mixed in to 20 character password. I assume the account got auto banned by some racism checking robot.

Also I’m pretty sure I saw a setting somewhere to control what name is displayed. I think it’s under profile settings.

Anyone here have marginal Bluetooth connectivity with the PS4 controllers? Has that improved?

Always drove me nuts when I crossed my leg on the couch and my inputs started getting screwy. It’s about 10-12 feet to the console.

Rest mode seems to have issues still. I have had problems with the database rebuild when using it which is why I always shut down now. You can still start up with a controller. It just won’t download things when it’s off.

Yeah I’ve been powering down for now and haven’t seen any more weirdness since I’ve started doing that. I’ll give it another patch or two before trying to use rest/resume again.

It was a problem on PS4 when it shipped too. Not sure what it is with Sony and that feature, but it’s plagued them.

That could be true since I rarely used it for the PS4 when it first released, but I don’t recall any game literally crashing consoles either and there’s far too many reports of that (even unrelated to the rest mode).

I find it rather confusing and they really need to figure that out immediately.

I’ve only had one and it hasn’t seemed to bork anything, but that is not ok.

Is it just me, or are these not even available for queuing anymore?

Do you mean on the Playstation Direct site? There were some yesterday, after a lull of several days.

Anywhere. I’ve never seen an option to buy or queue at Best Buy, and nothing on any other sites for a while.

I’ve given up even trying at this point after I stayed up for Meijer’s disaster over the weekend. Just not worth it for something that’s supposed to bring me joy and relieve stress.

This is pretty much me too.
