Better off going all digital for reasons @forgeforsaken gave
Ahhhh… right. I remember now how PS3 did it and that it was a nightmare for Sony with gamesharing. The current setup is good. I’ve actually started moving to all digital this generation with PS5 games and as someone who has a vast collection of physical games dating back to Atari 2600, that’s saying something.
@Nesrie I do not mind load times on the external at all. This is the drive I bought…

USB 3.0 might play a role in the speed in that the PS5 can handle higher transfer rates than the PS4 Pro? I don’t know enough technically to know if that’s true. It definitely is faster than it was on the Pro. That I’m sure of as I noticed it immediately in Warzone which I’ve been playing since it launched. I’m also using the HD texture pack which means more and larger assets to load and it’s so much better on PS5 by a ton.
Now obviously, the internal SSD is going to be even better, but I am saving that space for PS5 games specifically because it’s limited and it’s mandatory right now. I have a lot of stuff installed on the external and regularly play Battlefield 1, Battlefield V, Titanfall 2, and a little Dirt Rally 2.0. All of them seem snappier although Battlefield V is a pig no matter what when it comes to load times. It sure is purty though once you get in there. Locked 60fps on a 65" TV with HDR in 4K is just plain beautiful to behold.

I picked up this one although at a BF price:
It’s why I didn’t have it when I moved everything. I was waiting for a better price. I also plan on buying more PS4 games for a bit than PS5 since a lot of those flagship titles will probably wind up being PC for me.
I’ll be getting that M.2 drive probably not long after they make that available AND the prices are reasonable.
The game looks to be around 100 GB without patches. I feel like some around her kind of made fun when I said so like 4 games on this thing… ugh.
That’s a good one for sure. If I had been able to wait I would probably have gotten that too. I needed more storage earlier this year with the near 200GB install of Modern Warfare/Warzone. It was untenable. When I got it, I was surprised how slick external hard drives are on PS4! I think it took them awhile to get there, but it works great.
It seems like install sizes outside of something like Cold War haven’t gone up that much on PS5. Siege is just a hair larger than its PS4 version. Demon’s Souls is about 55GB. I think the thing to watch with storage is your video clips. They can be HUGE if you’re playing and recording at full resolution. I just looked now and I’ve already used 24GB of storage for clips!

Based on what the PS5 can do, he might become the primary media device for that room, except Alexa is still needed as a SmartHub, at least for now. I figure even if I don’t fill it with games, I might fill it with some music.
Consoles have never been a go to device for me, and it might actually change this time around, even if I wait for THE PS5 game for me to actually play a Next Gen game on it. My pretty little computer. It’s still going to be pretty funny if the actual next PS5 game I buy is the OverCooked one. Hehe. I just love that game!
Nothing wrong with Overcooked! That’s fun stuff with a group. I got my kids to play it a couple times in the past and we had a blast.
I’d used my PS4 Pro as a media hub alongside apps on my TV since the pandemic started. The PS5 has 100% replaced it now and other than the fact it needs some apps that were on the PS4, it has been an excellent replacement. I use my PC less and less for anything other than budgeting and gaming. I have a 5.1 system in the living room with the Samsung 65" Q70 TV. Cat by my side and gaming, Disney+, YouTube, Twitch…even my own streaming, it all happens mostly through PS5 now.
It looks cool nestled behind the left side of the TV, too. :)

I am really looking forward to getting Overcooked 1 online. I am hoping Overcooked 2 is cross gen, but either way once things are better, my gaming group occasionally will just sit back, relax and play these local games. I am really hoping they will come out with more colors for the controllers. I usually take a long time to build up to four controllers, but I want to be a little faster this time around… but don’t want them all the same color.
My receiver with PS4 and now PS5 has been great. The only reason why the Fire TV Cube is still around is I need it to voice control my smart stuff like the plugs and lightbulbs. Even if they wind up adding that to PS5 in a future version, I am not going to want to pick up a controller and to tell my lights to go on when I can just speak in a room and do it now. I suppose the camera can do that if it also has a camera, but I’ve had no buffering issues using PS5 to watch shows and play games.
I don’t like the feel of the media remote but it works well for viewing.
What’s going with it? It’s literally used for hours a day on my 2 Xboxes and it doesn’t cause crashes or issues at all. I think it just exposes an issue on the console you were using, unfortunately.

I’ve had issues with the YouTube app on my TV too. It’s crashed on there and is harder to stop and get it cleared up.
Yeah it’s not artificial scarcity
The new media remote does not have the best feel in your hand. I’d also rather they have Twitch on a button instead of Spotify or even Disney+, but I’ll deal. It does have a microphone button, but doesn’t seem to have a microphone built in unless I’m missing something?
And yes, I’m waiting for other colors for the controllers, but they clearly are supply constrained here at the start which is why everything is only one color. It guarantees that everything they make sells equally as fast due to lack of choice and probably speeds up production too.

Sony claims that mic button is for future use but… there is no obvious mic on the thing. I can only assume it’s meant to turn on and off some other devices mic, maybe like a camera or something.
Ah… I did not know that about the mic button. I do like that it seems to go into a low power mode when not in use.
How long did it take you to figure out that the PS logo was a button? :D

Heh, As long as it took me to pull up a video to find out about the other button to get batteries in and out of the thing. In my defensed, some of the other unboxing folks were just as puzzled as I was.
I mad the media remote before the system so it was the first thing I checked out.

The first time I used it, I wasn’t sure what was up! I’m like, “There has to be a way to get back to the home menu… the back button ain’t cutting it.” lol!
It’s not quite as dumb as me putting a disc in upside down multiple times before I figured that out, but it was confusing! Also, that hidden button to open up the battery compartment is tricky!

Putting it back is needlessly a pain too.
I really don’t care for the remote. It feel likes something isn’t quite right with it, and I am really over these streaming services paying to get their buttons on there too. It’s at least handier to change the volume quickly on the media remote though.

I’ve found it useful as I have been using the PS5 a lot to flip around YouTube or Twitch during the pandemic while I work. Streams are good for background noise since I’m home alone often right now. It’s just more convenient than the apps on my TV for the most part.
I do appreciate that they made a first party media remote solution this time. Having it come from PDP last gen was not the best.

Yep. It’s very useful for Media stuff. I just wish it was shaped differently or something. It’s quite right.
We’ve come a long way from my SNES days where any of the third party controllers would just start having exposed wires after a time, but yeah I prefer first party over third on some of this peripheral stuff too.
DaveLong

Oh yeah. I at least investigate third party peripherals now, but usually first party is still the way to go. There’s such a firm grip on the standard console controller by the console makers now that it’s really hard to replicate that with a third party item. That said, and this isn’t PS5 related, the Switch allows for a lot of really great 3rd party controllers that are excellent for its broad range of retro offerings.
It just occurred to me that I haven’t tried any of my joysticks or gamepads yet I have that are PS3/PS4 compatible to see if they work. Definitely will try to test that this weekend!

Heh. I am sure I haven’t a PC joystick around here and a big ole wheel too. They are typically too large for my hands, especially the wheels with buttons. I have long fingers, so they’re not small hands but man that wheel.
