Wasn’t that cheap solder though, rather than inadequate cooling?

It was a combination of the two, as I understand it.

That’s true to a certain extent, but the entire concept behind their constant boost clock scheme means that they don’t have to account for worst case scenario thermal events. It clocks down in a deterministic manner where the Xbox Series is promising guaranteed peak clock speeds at all times. It makes cooling the PS5 and easier problem because they know it will never use more than a prescribed amount of power. So while it’s probably true they are spending more on cooling, it’s unlikely that cost offsets the other areas where they are saving money in a significant manner.

The PS5 is a freaking skyscraper. The only reason they would do this is for better cooling. It must be in the same ballpark.

Between that and the corset it’s wearing, it’s really going to appeal to a certain crowd.

The modern three look less appealing than the older two to me.

I forgot just how ugly the PS5 is. What were they thinking?

Seems like they just wanted to try and make it look like someone designed it instead of the cable company boxes the others keep churning out. Not a fan of the design, but at least it looks like someone tried.

Yeah, co-sign this. They tried, took a risk, and face planted with that design. Hope your living room has a Jetsons or minimalist aesthetic because this doesn’t go with many styles.

It’s isnt even going to be easy to hide. Ha.

I guess it doesn’t really matter much, though. I’d care more about it being quiet.

IMO, the launch X360 was the most attractive console design ever. It was approachable industrial design, immediately distinguishable from its fellows, and I found it attractive. Not in a sexual way.

You’d think it would be like PCs, with third party layout and case solutions. Is that a thing?

Rumored 599 cost to produce.

Did you read the replies to that guy? He’s apparently untrustworthy. I’ll take Bloomberg and ZhugeEx who has been around a long time over that dude’s guess.

Eh. I don’t think it’s much worse than the black plastic industrial brick designs they have used on previous generations. I’m not going to proudly display it as a centerpiece anyways.

I’m MUCH more concerned that it’s big enough & has enough cooling that it doesn’t (1) sound like a jet on takeoff or (2) kill itself with heat like the 360

Diego

I hope it stays cool and there is no problem laying it on it’s side. My entertainment tower does not have a shelf tall enough to have it upright.

Im with you @Nesrie if i cant lay this on its side and get decent cooling im going to have a problem.

I saw what I think was one if the early promotional images of it laying on it’s side, so I’d imagine you’ll have no problem there. It just kinda looked like it had been left in a car on a hot day and began to melt on one side :D

Haha. Yeah I don’t see how that’s going to look… right on the side. I mean plastic bricks at least look okay on most sides, but hey if it’s cool, runs neat new games, can run at PS4 games, might even have access to the older systems… could very well be the first console I buy in year 1.

I think it looks better on its side:

The shape of that thing is really awkward.
