Same with Xbox for the past few years. I’m still surprised about Nintendo.
Still, I guess if the point is to have uniform controls world-wide, I guess you don’t want people modifying things on a system level and to get used to one way of doing things world wide.
A little somewhat informed speculation…

It seems a little odd to complain that Sony is losing on the Digital version when it’s the digital version they’ll have the most control over for future prices. It just seems shortsighted to focus the cost on the optical drive instead of what not having one actually means… in the long run, so yeah I think Cooper is right.
The long game benefits these content creators to take physical media away from everyone.
They also have complete control over the manufacturing split so they can manage the financial impact extremely well. Of course, by “blew it” all Pachter seems to mean is they couldn’ve charged more and sold just as many. This completely ignores the perceptual advantages of making the Series S look like a bad value at only $100 less.

Yeah, I would guess that they hoped to sell it at $450, and only went to $400 to counter the Series S announcement. That would also explain why the stock was apparently so low – they produced it expecting that most people would opt for the disc-drive version.

400 dollars, some sub that most people in this country don’t seem to acknowledge as part of their where did my money go equation, and the kids are playing free games or “free” games and all the might need is another controller. I don’t see how they can go wrong here, well aside from parents looking a few weeks before the holiday wondering why they can’t get something that has been barely on the shelves for weeks before that. Then they can just turn to the right and go MS.

Mellified has some weird grudge against Sony going on right now so you just have to kind of shrug when he throws another PS5 disasterbation article into the thread.
Well, in this case, the article says Sony messed up by charging too little. It’s like some version of a humble brag. They messed up! They’re giving customers too good a deal!

Yea, the complaint only makes sense if you’re considering it in a vacuum from other console pricing and from the perspective of Sony trying to maximize profit only on console sales and only in the short term.
But hey, it wouldn’t be a console launch without an… interesting… take from Pachter!
I though this was interesting because, as was pointed out elsewhere, the argument is Sony is charging too little. I know the PS5 will do well and be successful and continue the console ownership model we’ve been used to for many, many years.
That said, Sony bungled the Vita, screwed original PSVR owners, maintained an anti-consumer pre-order policy for years, and still has an awful multi-console save experience. They’re not doing anything this generation I haven’t seen before a dozen times. I wish they’d impressed me more.
Doesn’t mean I won’t buy a PS5 All Digital at some point - probably Prime Day or Black Friday 2021 when I can get it for under $350.

That “blew it” article is dumb.
The PS5 is basically a gaming PC in a slim ATX case.

Except for that liquid metal cooling part.
Very cool.
One thing I didn’t understand, since he’s talking in Japanese. The CPU and GPU are both housed in that central chip on the motherboard?
Here they show the CPU:

And then they zoom into that same part again for the GPU I think?

Yes, modern consoles use semi custom APUs integrating the CPU and GPU as well as a lot of custom features for things like texture decompression.
Zen 3 to be announced tomorrow :)
It looks like it came out of the PS3 “phat” school of design.
Series X looks like a simpler design.

Man, the production values of that video… could have afforded a decent microphone maybe?

XSX is a more elegant industrial design, driven by the desire for maximum cooling and minimum noise for sure.
