Please help root out 'Messenger Service' from my computer

I get ‘messenger service’ pop-ups on my computer, I’ve run ‘AdAware’ five or six times but it NEVER finds it, it’s a HUGE drain on my system but it doesn’t show up in either ‘running applications’ or the ‘task manager’. What can I do??

What operating system do you have? If it’s 9X, you’re proper fucked. Otherwise just following the link below.

It’s pretty amazing what a simple search in google achieves :) Let’s give it up for the best search engine in the world!

Whoa whoa whoa there college boy, what’s all this fancy ‘comp-u-tor’ talk?

No seriously though, I did find that, however I’m getting porn ads through this thing, it’s not just for Microsoft stuff?

You’ll get everything.

It’s an actual Microsoft utility, but somebody out there figured out how to use it for spam purposes. What really sucks for 9X users is that they can’t disable it.

So it’s ANOTHER security hole? Fantastic. I got Windows XP so it should be ok now. Thanks heaps Jake :D

I don’t know if I’d call it a security hole. For one, when talking about 9x variants, there is no security to speak of. Also, I think with any firewall, you should be able to block the port(s) that the messenger services listens to and be fine. Lastly, it’s a one way irritant and not a means by which a hacker can access data on the machine.

That seems to be true.Zone Alarm blocks all of that crap without having to disable messenger(although I disabled it anyway…).

Deleteing keys from the registry isn’t rocket science, duder.

shrug

I fixed this about 5-6 months ago. At the time, I didn’t know of any fix for 9X, duder.

Did somebody call?

Hey can I be cool too and say words that don’t exist in the dictionary ?!

Only if you’re Voltaic. Sorry.

?

Buy a router. Problem solved!

I have a router and had to do disable the Messenger service anyway. Maybe you need to change that to:

  1. Buy a router.
  2. Configure the router’s archaic UNIX-style settings.
  3. Problem solved!

nah, the router works, your roommate is just a closet spammer - the problem is inside the firewall

holy shit, that’s like that cliche scene in horror movies…

THE SPAMMER IS SPAMMING YOU FROM INSIDE YOUR HOUSE.

AIIIIEEEEEEEEEE!!!
