Pope Dies, April Fools oh wait maybe not

Yeah the pope isn’t dead yet, or at least it isn’t officialy announced. I’ve been intently interestedin the coverage about him I’m not catholic but I am impressed with him. It seems he accomplished a whole lot and the world is a brighter place since he was here.

The headline on Yahoo is “POPE WEAKENS FURTHER”, and I’m wondering-- how can they tell?

The headline (or “screenline”, since the line took up 70% of the screen including the center) on Fox News was “Praying for the Pope”.

I wonder how much is propaganda and how much news. What I don’t understand as much is why the center is playing along.

Maybe I should look at this as a good thing. At least we aren’t discussing the marital shifts in JLos life… the dying status and precise timing of a Pope’s death has to at least be a slight improvement.

Are you sure? As far as I’m concerned, the Pope is just another celebrity, and at least we never got minute-by-minute reports of how Bennifer was doing.

A celebrity with 1 billion people in his flock…

I’m not very familiar with Catholic hierarchical structure, but my understanding is that the Pope is more than a figurehead… he’s selected from the group of Cardinals, high in the Catholic order. That makes him a more important figure in the world and even in the United States than Ben Affleck or Jennifer Lopez.

Though I do find it strange that so much emphasis is being placed upon his death… more so than on any single event of his life. The media as happy pallbearer?

Oh wait… wasn’t this the Pope that had the assassination attempt? That got a lot of media attention as I recall.

Yes, it’s the same Pope. It’s the only Pope I’ve known, not that I’m Catholic or anything.

John Paul II is probably the most important pope of the 20th century. Even though the church is in trouble in America and Europe, especially in light of the abuse scandal, Catholicism is growing in other parts of the world. He stood up to Communism and called for freedom in Europe and Cuba, has tried to heal breaches with Judaism, Islam and Orthodox Christianity and has published best-selling manifestos on faith in a modern age. And he did all this while still keeping the church one of the most conservative organizations in the world - for good and ill.

The great attention to his passing is in large part due to the very public nature of it. He is lingering on in full view of the world. His death is expected, and he is a giant figure. It’s as if President Bush took a week to die - that would be covered in great detail too. Most people who die gradually don’t do it in the bright lights of media attention because the media doesn’t know. John Paul II has been publicly ailing for a long time now.

Death is a time for obituaries, and he has a long one. It’s the summing up point. I’ve had some big moments in my life, but I don’t expect to people to dwell on what they mean in my life. When I die, I hope I’ll get an appropriate eulogy.

There are a billion Catholics in the world? Also, I did say “as far as I’m concerned,” and even if there were a trillion Catholics, I’m still pretty sure I wouldn’t be one of them.

How nice for you.

Yeah, I count myself pretty lucky.

Funny, I imagine luck has little to do with it. Considering free will and all.

Lucky to have had the sense to choose not to be in that club, I mean.

One day you will be able to have a small program running on your computer thats helps the Pope find God. Kinda like SETI. Only even less likely.

So why are you so snarky?

Why on earth does practically every news channel feel compelled to devote nearly their entire programming schedule to news “specials” about the Pope? I’ve been checking the various TV news channels available here on and off for the last 3 days and every single one of them has been covering the Pope practically non-stop. Enough already!

It’s fun!

Say what you will about Bard’s Tale, I think we owe it a debt of gratitude for reintroducing that word into common parlance.

The Bard’s Tale reintroduced “snarky”? I’m halfway interested in that, and halfway wanting to continue the recursive rectangle quote pattern like some drunken barbershop mirrror.

You’d prefer more Terri Schiavo?

Everyone is quick to deny it, but I don’t remember anyone here or anywhere else using the word before Bard’s Tale came out.
