Friends, the day after Harry passed, my sister-in-law, who is also our vet, offered to have us meet some kittens her co-worker was fostering. One of them quickly chose us, so it was an easy decision to bring her home.

Say hello to Miss Elizabeth “Lizzy” Bennet.

She’s definitely helping us deal with our grief over losing Harry so suddenly.

She looks like she is going to be trouble!

Congratulations!

I’d love a troublesome kitty. Instead, I’m dealing with this.

My condolences for your loss, Brian - but at the same time, congratulations on the new family member. She looks adorable!

Thank you! We introduced the two of them yesterday.

It’s going better than I expected.

I think more pics, and perhaps some videos, will be required so we can judge for ourselves.

Some progress, as requested.

Selkie and Wolfie! (I need to get a shot of them smiling)

Wolfie is always tagging behind. He’s the sweetest guy.

My son’s awesome Father’s Day presents to me.

(The paintings. I already had Simon and Athena.)

Those are great @Editer as are your furry friends. What breed is the stripey one with the ear tufts?

What an adorable pic. That needs to be made into something you can hang on the wall. Best buddies napping together.

@Editer I like what your son did for you as well. Man, we need so pet pics to mount around the house.

More progress you guys. This is one of Matilda’s (older cat) favorite spots, and that she’s sharing it with Lizzie is AMAZING.

Adorable. She’s watching Matilda and learning.

Yeah, we’re hoping that brings Matilda out of her shell a bit, as she learned to be a bit aloof from the older cat who just passed.

They’re both Maine Coons. Athena (the stripey one) is 10 months old and was a gift from my ex after my 17-year-old kitty Wally died back in January.

About a month after we got Athena, my young tomcat Loki died suddenly from FIP, and I wanted to get another kitty to keep Athena company, but this was right at the start of the quarantine, and there were zero rescue cats available within 100 miles except for special needs (Feline Leukemia, litterbox issues, ex-feral and afraid of people, etc.). So given my experience with a Maine Coon mix (my college cat Bill) and Athena, I decided to go ahead and get another Maine Coon since purchasing was about the only way to get a kitten back in March. So we welcomed Simon to the family. Despite his immense size, he’s just turned 9 months old.

Normally I’m anti-breeder and always get rescues, but it literally wasn’t an option then. Next round of kitties (which will probably be my last if these guys hopefully live full lives), I’ll be back to rescues.

(I know I don’t need to justify having purebreds, but I feel the need to apologize to my own self-judgement. :)

@BrianRubin, your kitties are adorable. Like you, I lost two wonderful cats very close to each other, and I know how hard that is and how there’s no actually replacing them. But it looks like you’ve got a great pair of new family members.

Motherfucker did the kitty thing and shoved a vase we thought was safe off the table.

Kittens have a lot more energy than fat adult cats.

You’re good, man. There are times when I’ve had purebred cats and dogs and you can’t regret great pets, no matter what. Not every breeder is the horrible stereotype we hear about being abusers of animals. In fact, most of the purebred animals I’ve owned I know the people who raised them. That shouldn’t hinder me from having one. Granted, there are a lot of good pets to rescue as well and I’ve done both.

Don’t beat yourself up about it though.

Kittens ARE energy. I think if you solve E = mc² it comes out to Kitten.

First your kittens are gorgeous, which is a feature of Maine Coons. I’m with Skipper, I think the majority of breeders are good people, that’s certainly true of all the cat and the handful of dog breeders I’ve known. My two Maine Coons are hands down the best cats I’ve ever had, beside being beautiful and huge 25 and 28lbs. They are among the most affectionate cats I’ve ever had. They are just low stress, easy- going chill cats, and after reading Maine Coon Facebook groups for the last few years, it really is part of the breed, nothing too special about mine. Everyone who’s cat sit my guys has raved about them also.

In the early 2000s, I got two and my sister got three rescue cats from the humane society, every single one of them had a behavioral issue, we still loved them just like parents love their problem children.
My first two cats out of college were also from the humane society, and they disappeared after a couple years, so I’m done with rescue cats. Too much stress and heartbreak.

The breeder required I keep them indoors which is a good idea, especially since I’ve had 3 cats disappear on me over the decades. But I really feel like these guys came with an easy button. They eat what I put in front of them, they use scratching posts and cat condos, not furniture. They don’t spray and always use the litter boxes, even if I haven’t cleaned for a day or two. If I need to give them pill, I put it in a pill pocket and they swallow it like a dog, no drama. They don’t howl at night. They don’t freak out, when the see another cat or dog, they are friendly with other people. You can put them in a cat carrier with a minimum of fuss. I can trim their nails without losing blood and even groom one fairly easily. They are affectionate without being needy, because they entertain each other.

Unfortunately, the fluffier one Kiwi, coat gets matted, and he is not good about letting me take out the mats. So for the first time ever found a groomer who could work on Kiwi, and so I got them lion cuts last week. I think they look ridiculous but Kiwi is much happier and the hair will grow. They
turn 5 next week, best purchase I’ve made this decade.

Anyway enjoy your MCs, I predict you are going to love them.
*the one flaw with MC is they do shed a ton.

We had to get a lion cut on a Maine Coon we had years ago. She was a tiny thing–like 8 lbs, very unusual for a MC.

Funniest looking damned thing I’ve ever seen. I felt so sorry for her.
