Lizzie and Dumplin are soooo cute! And yeah, Lizzie and Gus are definitely peas in a pod, as they say down south.

@Strollen, haven’t done intros yet. Due to an unfortunate decision by Gus and his sisters’ caretakers last week to let them out, he came with a boatload of fleas. So we got him bathed at the vet and my son’s combing out the survivors right now. So we’re holding off intros until we’ve got him mostly flea-free. (And the kitten flea meds go on him tomorrow.) I think they’ll be fine, though. Simon came from a house full of cats not long ago, and Athena’s just chill AF. :)

Peas in a pod indeed.

why he so twiSTY AND SOFT AND WITH A BELLY SO WHITE AND FLOOFY OMG

All these cute kitties but man I love his nose markings!

“I’m Dumplin, and I’m the head of the Apple Dumplin’ gang, we’re fierce round these parts. We’re a fightin’ with the Ankle Posse and could use a good scout like you.”

Unbeknownst to me, Dumplin came equipped with fleas as well. Which she happily shared with her new older brothers Tripper:

Flea baths didn’t do the trick, so everyone got to wear a Seresto flea collar for a couple of weeks. Once all the fleas died I pulled the collars off and stashed them in case of another outbreak. They’re pricey (around $40-$45 each) but they last 8 months and by God they work. If you’ve got an indoor/outdoor cat I highly recommend them. We all live in rural Mississippi (which is rife with fleas, ticks and other creepy crawlies) so my gang all stay indoors.

Luckily we had zero trouble socializing Dumplin with the other two, but I believe it helped that all three are pretty young. Buddy is the oldest at two, Tripper is a little over a year, and Dumplin is about 4 months old. Plus she’s just so goddam adorable my boys fell in love right away. I kept them apart for 24 hours so she could acclimate, and they also had the “Hey new kid, what are you in for?” conversation under the door.

Buddy came from the pound and got his name for being inseparable from me when I first got him, so he became my Lil Buddy. Tripper also came from the pound, and his previous owners had named him Bob. I have a best friend named Bob, and simply extended his lineage to my friend (who is a Junior, himself). Bob’s official name became Robert James Adkins the Third, aka “Trip”. I’ve explained to Bob Jr. that his son expects to be written into the will, ASAP.

As mentioned upthread, Dumplin was a stray given to me by a co-worker, and her full name is Eudora Dumplin. She was the runt of the litter, and at 4 months is still the size of a large kitten so I doubt she’ll get much bigger. She’s a thief, though, and will steal the heart of anyone who lays eyes on her. She’s definitely a cat burgler…

Not my pet but I did get a new neighbor behind my house! Got a glimpse or two but finally got a picture today.

Photo doesn’t really do it justice, that’s a big tree branch it’s on. I’m no bird watcher, but from looking at Utah wildlife sites it looks like a Red Tail Hawk? If so, it says they’re up to two feet in length with a four foot wingspan (with that burly chest to boot). That sounds about right.

I heard some bird of prey sounding calls and went out back again and looks like its a family. Got a pic of two of the kids.

There’s always a ton of squirrels running around those trees, I imagine I’ll be seeing fewer of them now.

Along with my 100-pound black lab, Labowski, we also have a little 8-pound Yorkie. Little worried she’ll be carried away like in The Proposal if they run out of squirrels!

+1

He totally has The Dude’s personality! Pretty sure I’ve posted him before, but since this is the pet thread:

Ten years young and my bestest friend ever!

Fine doggo. Best boi.

Yes! More doggo photos!

PUPPY

DOGDOGDOG he’s a dog, so beautiful and AMAZING

Fuck’s sake save it for r/gaming

There is a falcon nested somewhere in my vicinity. I’ve seen it trying (and failing because it’s kind of small) to catch squirrels. I forget what species it is, but it has striped legs/pants.

Be worried. Keep an eye around you when walking the Yorkie, no long leashes, etc. We have hawks and even eagles nearby and with two small dogs I try to stay aware of any that are perched too close or circling.

But I guess the flip side of that is we have an awesome place nearby to visit and see more of those pretty birds.

Awesome shots of those murder squabs!

I live near a school playfield, with the usual tall light poles. There’s an osprey nest on top of one of them, and year after year I get to watch our “seahawks” raise their young. It’s especially great when the babies are just beginning to learn to fly.

Good to know. We’re trying to figure out some adjustments. The trees they seem to have nested in overlook our backyard so we’re trying to be vigilant when we let the dogs out. So far no issues, and I first spotted the big one a couple months ago, so fingers crossed. My wife is sad enough about the fate of our backyard squirrels, if anything happened to our Yorkie it would not be pretty.

The Dude has been really protective of his little sister ever since she got the chew toy treatment by an American bulldog, so maybe having a 100-pound dog on patrol will help a little to convince the hawks to chase more squirrels instead.

Here’s the Brady Bunch:

What a great shot. I’m not a dog guy, but isn’t 100 lbs huge for lab? I thought 50-70 was normal?

OMG PUPPIES

Yeah, that’s more of the normal range. I adopted him from a shelter and he’s likely a mix, I’m just not sure with what. :)
