I love how Emerald talks to me some days: “human, there is a problem we must address”

This is Indiana Jones. He passed on yesterday after 19 years with us. He was old, and it was his time, but it’s still tough.
Left to right - Teddy, Rosie, Sandy. All rescues.
Teddy has the best story. Old man (probably around 15), found during a TNR project at a brickyard. He’s all beat up, has a broken tail, 2 BBs lodged in him, and is probably the nicest cat I’ve ever met. He just sidles up to dogs or people and starts purring. Really cool cat.
So sorry for your loss. Pets are family members and it really hurts to lose them. I love the photo of your three rescues. You clearly are a good person.

Thanks, dude. I give my wife all the credit. She was very active at the local shelter for awhile, and now helps run a low-cost spay/neuter clinic. I just clean up poop.
Lilly the hotel dog. After her walk, she goes straight into her crate to chill.
I will mourn Indiana Jones with you. It always hurts.
Damn that is a good kitty life. So sorry for your loss.

Sorry for Indy. :( It’s so hard to lose them.
So glad Teddy found you! Poor guy – what I’d like to do to whoever shot him wtih the BB gun, grrr.

Sorry to hear about Indy as well. Sounds like he had a long life and several friends to finish it with.
Good on you both for the rescues. You can tell they all look content. My GF wants to volunteer at a shelter and I’m afraid we’ll have a full house if she does. I struggle right now with two older dogs. But we both know their time is short from this point. Other pets are out there needing love too.

So my kitty, Shadow, is now fixed or broken, depending on how you look at it. Prior to the fire evacuation, he would almost never come downstairs. He’d flee if he was down there at the slightest sound or movement and basically acted like the only living space he had was upstairs… all it took was forcing into a cat carrier he hated, driving four or so hours north which was almost 5 times longer than his previous trip and being set loose in a strange motel room to get him to act all chill down here. Not only that, he is bringing around some of his favorite toys as you can see in the back there.
That is one big gorgeous floof.
That’s a good looking boy you got there Ms. Nesrie, we’re gonna need to see more pictures of him. How old is he?
My previous cat, Rufus, was was a shy boy at first and would hide whenever company came over. A few years ago I moved from Texas to Florida, which took about 11 hours by car and he was miserable the entire time. When I got to FL I stayed with some friends for a couple of months, and I was certain that he’d spend the first few weeks hiding under my bed. Instead, he walked around their house like he owned the place and was never shy around people after that. I would suggest that maybe Shadow isn’t broken, but instead found a confidence he never knew he had.
Rufus may not have been outgoing at first, but he was always my BFF. I literally found him as a stray kitten, mewling in a bush outside my work one rainy day. He was so small he could actually fit in a teacup. That didn’t last long, though, and full grown he tipped the scales around 20 pounds. He was eight when he died last year and I still miss him every day.

He has gorgeous fur and color. Off topic, it sounds like you’re back in the house? Just hoping no fire damage nearby if so.

That’s truly amazing. Maybe there really is something to an unexpected move and a new environment that kicks some kitty’s into discovering some bravery and exploration habits.
It would take him a good 1-2 hours on game nights to come out that was only when I had my usual group of 5… any more than that and we wouldn’t see him the whole night. When those start again, he might just be right there with is wand.
I miss my senior kitty too. He was a brave and adventurous cat. It was because he refused to be safe I turned him into an resentful indoor kitty. He was half his size when I lost him, and still eager take on the world.
Yeah the whole litter was like that, he was about middle size compared to the rest.
I am back in the house. The fire damage here is devastating but not on my property or in my neighborhood. On the plus side, so many donations have been pouring in that many sites can’t take anymore. As far as the pet side goes, there are so many pets being found. We know our community lost a little, but the reuniting has been tearful and joyful, and more sightings keep coming as others try to coax lost pets to them.

I know we all think of things lost, businesses, homes, etc, but this really affects me. We have similar issues around the east coast during hurricanes. Lots and lots of pets that people either leave behind since they don’t care, or don’t have the ability to take with them during evacuations. It’s so sad.
Here’s hoping they all find their home or a home somewhere.

Yeah, and the Paradise survivors have been great with their advise, to basically keep trying. At least one couple said it took them four days in a row to coax their little one out from under a somehow still intact shed.
I lost my departed senior kitty for a few days and went… crazy trying to find him. I can only imagine the experiences others are going through. There are a lot of vets taking care of injured pets though for free, so there is that too.
Can anyone recommend stuff to help with tooth plaque tartar? In a few months I can take her to the vet but for the time being are there toys or snacks or both/combo that work? She is old and has sensitive stomach and is bored with most toys, but I am willing to try.

Chews, mostly. Pets get bad tartar buildup. We (or I) accentuate that by not providing enough -chewing- food that is tough. We have two 15 year old dogs, one has the breath of a saint, the other has the breath of a hag. Guess which one plays with his chew toy constantly?
There are treats and even food diets that help, but we end up spending more each year on the tooth heath of Rosie because she just eats, “the good food,” and doesn’t give a damn about greenies or tartar chews.
Start with some of those treats/toys specifically for that and go from there. It’s hard with picky pets though.
I know we’ve tried Greenies, but she just is not interested.
