The only optimism I can come up with is that Trump is so lazy and terrible that there’s a chance his incompetence will accidentally obstruct the Republicans from their goal of returning us to the Gilded Age.

The incompetence is a feature in the mind of the sociopath billionaires lurking behind the scenes, not a bug. They see government as inherently bad. Having an incompetent President will help destroy it, so that’s what they want. Sure, the nonstop fuckups will harm or kill millions of people, but anyone who matters is protected by their giant piles of money. So burn the rest of it down.
If you for a second doubt that we’re not in a second Gilded Age - that we haven’t indeed gone far past the Gilded Age - then read Jane Mayer in the New Yorker on Robert Mercer, the asshole billionaire who owns a big chunk of both Trump and Breitbart.. At the moment the US belongs to the Mercers. We just happen to live in it.
