Most of the article is about why a “500-year flood” is misleading. Basically a 500 year flood means that a particular piece of land is supposed to have a 0.2% chance of flooding each year. An area the size of Houston has multiple rolls of the dice. Even taking that into account though, lately it has seemed like the flood models that drive the 500-year figure are way off. Maybe changing weather patterns in the Gulf?
