Honestly, this line of discussion doesn’t interest me at all. I’m just tired of the bullets flying around.
Yes, and for some reason a significant percentage of people in the U.S. are gun-crazy.
I was driving a few weeks ago and I may have started to drift into another lane – I really don’t know what I did – but I triggered the driver next to me who had his window down and started yelling at me, calling me a “motherfucker,” etc. I was actually a bit worried he was going to pull out a gun and shoot at me. That’s where I am mentally now living in America. I think every third person is packing. It’s pretty sad.
Are there some gun-crazy folks, yes, but I suspect there is a large group just rallying around this as a cause against the demonized left, not because they actually care about guns.
This is just my personal opinion but I think there are a lot of gun owners who have bought the NRA’s argument about incrementalism eventually costing them their guns. And guys like @ArmandoPenblade scare the bejesus (sp) out of them.
I think the gun owners who believe in the absolute rights of gun ownership are few however.
My family hunts, and a lot of people around me have and use guns. I don’t use them but I am not inherently uncomfortable around them even. Most the gun owners I’ve encountered are polite, and when I went morel hunting I remember one gentleman actually politely asked if it was okay if he brought a pistol up into the woods with us. I think I was the only one there whose opinion on guns he didn’t know.
This same guy though, would not pack a AR-15 into Costco or church just to make a stink or leave his weapons hanging around outside a safe. I bet he is a member of the NRA, but he’s a responsible owner.
Other countries don’t have a second amendment and you can still own guns there.
Anyway, I don’t have a considered opinion about whether discussing 2A repeal is a) desirable or b) in any way politically useful.
I do think it’s time gun-control advocates stopped letting the NRA control the tone and scare everyone shitless with their ARGLE BARGLE KILL YOU ALL Dana Loesch bullshit.
What a surprise, Dow sinks like a rock after stupid new tariffs announced.
So Republicans being on a rant about the country is collapsing and in decline decide to elect this dipshit who has done more to hasten the decline than anyone probably could.
Edit: I love that they are also already trying to find a way back into TPP and everyone is just ignoring them
Yeah, just wait until he blows up NAFTA.
Damn, the Dow is down again? #ThanksObama
TPP negotiations not going well?! #ThanksObama
They’re going to take the guns?! #MAGA
And you know what? I’m fine with that. I mean ultimately, my ideal is much like Armando’s- I’d like no guns left in our society. That said, I’m much more reasonable and willing to compromise. I’m in favor of, just like cars, you have to get a license to get a gun, and keep it’s registration updated, and hey, probably insurance against misuse and damage to other’s property. If you want to transfer ownership, you have to go through the bureaucracy, and until then, you’re liable for anything that happens with it. Have a period of amnesty for a few years then steadily-ramping-up penalties to get people acclimated.
I don’t even really hate to admit it, but to my mind, that would have a chilling effect on gun ownership. I think a lot of people would decide it just wouldn’t be worth the hassle and money, or potential fines/jail time if they’re found breaking the law. So really, killing two birds with one stone.
It would be interesting to see the effect it would have on people if insurance companies starting charging extra for people who had guns at home, especially with kids.
These comments brought to mind a recent post over at Eric S Raymond’s blog. I follow his posts because 1) on technical subjects, he’s someone I respect and I’m interested in what he has going on and 2) he’s a Libertarian with some really ideological views and I like to keep an eye on what craziness comes out of those parts.
I don’t necessarily think that this is a majority view of gun owners. But there’s a very vocal minority who thinks this way, believing that their right to arm themselves is above anything the law provides. When you think like that, it’s a very short step to the position of “anything the government does to limit the ability to obtain firearms, no matter how much common sense is involved or how many people die for lack of controls, must be opposed to the bitter end.”
Does the Constitution recognize the right of schoolchildren not to be gunned down in their classrooms?
Just curious.
Other than in the Preamble to the Constitution, no.
Bummer.
I’ll believe it when liberals win some elections.
It’s great to call yourself liberal. Now fucking vote.
I’m dubious. There are natural reasons for people to become more conservative as they age. Older people are more set in their ways. Plus as you get older and accumulate wealth your desire to over throw the existing system diminishes.
- Movement conservatism is no longer generally about adhering to the old ways.
- Most of these young kids will be in debt forever.
