Hopefully these vein finders will be common soon enough:

Edit: did not see the needle the first time I perused this image

There is an awful lot of body horror in this thread today.

I used to regularly sell plasma in college to keep myself in CD, movie, and beer money. Thankfully never had an experience like that, but you meet some real characters while getting your blood spun out and reinjected (cold… oh so cold) back into your veins.

Related to these experiences with medical procedures, COVID-19, and the ‘oh, what might have been’ thoughts that pop up in relation to the topic of this thread:

Not sure this belongs here… but the other CV thread seems less political.

My good friend’s wife works in the ER at a small hospital in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. He tells me they are officially overwhelmed: beds in the hallways, no room for more patients, can’t transfer to other hospitals because they are full. Green Bay is equally bad and they are moving patients out of state.

For anyone not familiar with WI: the Democratic governor put restrictions in place and the Republicans challenged it and had it overturned in court. There are mask rules but apparently they aren’t being enforced and people do not take it seriously.

So depressing. It didn’t have to be this way… it upsets me that a pandemic and people dying became a political issue.

Well shit. That’s horrible news.

WI has been trending badly lately (and Trump was recently there and chanted something like “open up the state!”) but this is first hand news to me.

I cannot imagine how anyone in the medical field could vote for that assclown.

On This Week in Virology the doctor from New York, speaking from his own experience during the peak, said that it’s a shame they didn’t allow news coverage of how bad things were in the early days inside the hospitals. No hospital wants to look terrible on TV (or even be exposed to lawsuits) but it may have helped convince people that they needed to take it seriously.

Just one last post on needles and drawing blood and whatnot; if you have thin/hard to find veins, ask for a child’s needle. Yes, it will take longer (reduced flow) but one stick will usually do it.

Maddow has doctors and / or nurses on almost nightly talking about how their hospital is being overwhelmed.

But are they showing the devastation?

Like this:

Thankfully, they do seem to be in the minority, but then again most of the medical field isn’t making $400k+.

I knew. I am British. Or so I say “Member of the Pirate Kingdown”

I never do that what you describe - or any of my coworkers. Can’t talk for everyone, but thats not the custom here on my workplace.

Bleep bloop herp derp

Yes but this is from me, you can trust me over the news!

I said that to my friend months ago. I think some people are likely to blow off the “CV is bad” idea if they don’t see the impact.

I have a thing with my veins. My record is 12 tries before one went and got someone better. Once they had to use my foot.

On masks, it is also political (of course). Was linked to some campaign literature for Dan Forest here in NC. He is the current lt. gov and the Republican running for governor of NC. What he is saying will get people killed.

I also an a very “tough stick”, or so they tell me. My record, from a Navy corpsman, is 22 tries. A few years ago I had a heart thing and I actually had to ask the paramedic to stop trying and let the hospital put in the IV. He was up to 8 tries.

A plug for anesthesiologists though. A couple of times I’ve had them observe nurses struggling with my veins, come over and just casually pop the needle in with no apparent effort and no pain. Those folks are good!

It’s probably an excuse just not to see him

Ha ha. Trump comes into the room and Melania fake coughs, and Trump retreats in terror.

Oh please, he’s immune 😜
