The eastern border of North Carolina is probably the most ridiculous cartographic-political relic left in the modern age.

Except possibly Dahala Khagrabari.

And now I will forever be pronouncing Vermont as something like ‘Ver-mohn’

I honestly don’t even understand HOW you screw up a map like that. Like, did they somehow have a bunch of modular states and were building their own map? What could possibly have led to that?

After having read the comments that one of his own advisors made on the prior page, my guess is that they actually had two of those kids’ puzzles with all the shapes of the states, one in red and the other blue, and somebody must have been proud that they sort of got close to the right layout and snapped a picture for the website. Kind of like a proud parent using a magnet to hang their kid’s art from the fridge.

It’s the only thing that makes sense to me.

As France itself pledges to take 30,000 refugees, it’s hilarious how these big bad Republican governors who constantly criticize Obama for being a pussy and who previously made fun of France after 9/11 are now scared shitless about a bunch of helpless women and children who are trying to escape terrorists.

What unbelievable cowards.

I especially love how we can’t let them in because it would be so easy for them to get guns!

(Also, just for semi-inflammatory off-topic purposes, on average, the terrorists in Paris each killed fewer people than a single 'Murican did at Sandy Hook…)*

  • based on the last numbers I saw

Obama called the GOP a bunch of scaredy cats who are afraid of babies, so Ted Cruz challenged him to fight out on the playground after school. But he didn’t use the phrase “double dog dare,” so I don’t think it counts as a proper challenge.

Cruz’s childish reaction does show Obama chose his words poorly with the speech earlier today. That rhetoric just reinforces the GOP’s position and leaves them little room to move from it, even when they calm down and hopefully cooler heads using reason prevail.

Which is the point. It’s to try and scare people away from Republicans and red meat for the base. Obama knows that compromise is impossible with these folks- so better to try and marginalize them. You win elections now by scaring your base and identity politics. It’s one reason I honestly have little hope left- we’re heading into a soft version of the Social Wars these days.

Guys, stop being unfair to the republican Party (or at least politicians in it).

Heroes like Ted Cruz are perfectly fine taking in Syrian refugees. As long as they are Christian or Jewish. Oh and white. Oh and they need to speak English. They should also be wealthy.

The sad part is (as everyone knows) he actually said the stuff about having a religious test on letting people in to the USA. The even sadder part is it will probably win him votes.

American Christians pledge solidarity

There’s been a lot of grass roots concern for the fate of Syrian Christians. There’s been much less for Muslim community.

The NH democratic governor is joining in on the fear and panic. If I had room in my house I’d say screw you and volunteer to host a refugee family myself.

Trump has some interesting ideas for Muslims in America.

https://www.yahoo.com/politics/donald-trump-has-big-plans-1303117537878070.html

Yahoo News asked Trump whether his push for increased surveillance of American Muslims could include warrantless searches. He suggested he would consider a series of drastic measures.

“We’re going to have to do things that we never did before. And some people are going to be upset about it, but I think that now everybody is feeling that security is going to rule,” Trump said. “And certain things will be done that we never thought would happen in this country in terms of information and learning about the enemy. And so we’re going to have to do certain things that were frankly unthinkable a year ago.”

Yahoo News asked Trump whether this level of tracking might require registering Muslims in a database or giving them a form of special identification that noted their religion. He wouldn’t rule it out.

“We’re going to have to — we’re going to have to look at a lot of things very closely,” Trump said when presented with the idea. “We’re going to have to look at the mosques. We’re going to have to look very, very carefully.”

Registering people in a database because of their religion… It almost doesn’t even sound real.

Nah, we’ll just give them cool little moon-and-stars to wear on their lapels. It’ll be like being in a club!

More seriously, has fucking nobody in this country actually studied even American history? Specific, obvious examples of why this kind of xenophobic shit is retarded and counterproductive aren’t even a hundred years in our past!

And people wonder why I can’t take the GOP seriously.

It’s like someone discovered the secret zipper underneath the Connecticut River and everything to the East of it is now drifting up towards Greenland.

She is, of course, running for Senate against Republican Kelly Ayote so it was cold political calculation. I’ve lost a lot of respect for Hassan as a result of this.

Given that Christians in most parts of the Middle East besides Israel these days have a choice between fleeing and dying, there won’t be very many left to have grassroots concern for, before long.

So Trump is quite literally becoming Hitler now. I don’t even need to be worry about the Godwin’s Law invocation.

I swear, the longer this is going on, the more of a chance that his campaign is just a gigantic, epic troll of ultra right-wing social conservatives.

And just to make Trump a little more surreal, a Pew survey just released shows that more Mexicans have left the US in the last few years than have entered.

Using census data from both the United States and Mexico, the Pew report found that from 2009 to 2014, slightly more than a million Mexicans and their families — including about 100,000 children under 5 years old who were American citizens born in the United States — returned to live in Mexico. In the same period, an estimated 870,000 Mexicans came here, resulting in an outflow of about 140,000.

Really, Trump just needs to change his rhetoric: we still need that wall to prevent our cheap labor from escaping.
